Jaz Karis is a British singer/songwriter from South London. While attending the prestigious Brit School as a music major, she started recording her own music and was able to release her debut EP, Into the Wilderness, on the all-female-run indie Salute The Sun label in 2017. From there, she continued cultivating an underground fanbase and started collaborating with UK rappers, all of which propelled her towards a new deal with her own imprint housed under MNRK Records (formerly eOne). SIMS CASTAWAY is taken from her debut album, SAFE FLIGHT, out now.

Brittany Fousheé is a Jamaican-American singer/songwriter from Harlem via New Jersey who was raised in a musical household; her mother was a drummer for PEP, an all-woman 1980s Jamaican reggae band, and nurtured her daughter's musical talents by ensuring she was classically trained. Once in college, she released her debut EP - Speak Up - in 2018 and, subsequently, competed on season 15 of The Voice. Winding up on Team Adam, she only made it to the battle rounds before elimination, but decided to move to Los Angeles the following year. In 2020, she contributed vocal samples to Splice, a royalty-free music database, and crossed paths with rapper Sleepy Hallow who then sampled her for his Deep End Freestyle single that went viral. While not initially aware of the song's virality, nor having been credited at first, the record was Platinum by summer and motivated Fousheé to release her own version.

Deep End subsequently made it to #10 on Billboard's Alternative Airplay chart; the first record by a Black woman to hit the Top 10 for that chart since Tracy Chapman's Crossroads in 1989. A record deal with RCA followed and the rest is history. birds, bees is the opening track of her third album, Pointy Heights (named after land owned by her grandfather in Jamaica), which is available now.

Dinah Jane was my favorite in 5H, but her solo music has been really uneven for the talent (that voice!) she possesses. I liked her song this month quite a bit. Still sad "Heard It All Before" didn't pop off in a big way for her.
