Can you name an artist or group who had a huge successful album but their follow up album was a flop?

Are you trying to stir things with me? I thought u wanted interesting threads? I expected someone to bring Leona and Camila's 2nd albums up. Anyway I actually love their 2nd albums. We all know that Romance didn't sell as well as Camila's debut album but it did have 2 Hot 100 #1s and a couple decent songs such Liar, Shameless,Cry For Me and First Man. Leona's 2nd album Echo did underperform but Happy, I Got You, Outta My Head, Can't Breathe and Broken are decent songs.

Isn’t the thread talking about success (hit followed by a flop) and not how good the albums are? If the numbers support it, there’s nothing wrong with it being mentioned whether or not the songs are decent.

Would P!nk count? Is M!ssundaztood her biggest album? Or would that title go to Funhouse or The Truth About Love?
Lorde. Carly Rae Jepsen. Interestingly, those two examples are also highly critically acclaimed albums.

If the numbers support it, there’s nothing wrong with it being mentioned whether or not the songs are decent. We all have different opinions on what a flop is. Some people go by sales, others go by chart position or chart longevity. There are other factors to take into consideration, like how many hits are from a certain album or was the album critically acclaimed.

Some people go by sales, others go by chart position or chart longevity. There are other factors to take into consideration, like how many hits are from a certain album or was the album critically acclaimed. It’s true, there’s a lot that goes into what a flop is and I’d say expectations is a huge portion, while the critically acclaimed bit, unfortunately not so much. Otherwise Carly Rae Queenson would be massive right now. And she’s not. Looking at the two examples that set you off: Camila’s two albums. Her first reached #1 and second #3. The second album had 1/3 sales of the first, but both were certified platinum. The second had one significant hit (plus the add-on duet). I’m not sure I’d call her second album a “flop” personally, mostly because even though it didn’t do as well as the first, it didn’t do that much more poorly. Leona Lewis’ second album sold 1/9 the total of her first (in the US), a little more than 1/5 in the UK and about 1/3 worldwide. Her first album reached #1 while second #13. The second album had one Top 40 (hot 100) hit (#31) following the two hits of her first (#1 and #11). I’d definitely say Leona’s example is spot on.

Born This Way -> ARTPOP
Although I’d personally argue that The Fame was bigger than Born This way but in the context of this thread I think this applies.

Britney Spears “Oops!…I Did It Again” > ‘Britney’ comes to mind. It had a whopping 60% drop in sales compared to the former and it only came a year later. The album also included no hits (cue in radio boycott claims but still). Of course this isn’t considered a flop but the drastic decline in sales should be noted especially since it was just a year later.
Pink “Misundastood” > “Try This”…it’s interesting because that’s her best selling album but the fact that she followed up with the biggest flop of her career makes this a perfect example of what this thread is trying to illustrate.

Debbie Gibson's Electric Youth album spent five weeks at #1 in 1989. Then in 1990, her follow-up album Anything Is Possible peaked at #41... yikes!
