2000-2009. A decade of hits. A decade with many changes, many sounds. For those of us that lived through the decade and can remember doing so, what song first pops into your head? I'm not necessarily asking which song you feel is the quintessential 2000s song, I'm just asking what is the first song that comes to mind at all.
For me, it's Promiscuous. My mind immediately goes to the mid-00s banger that blended the hip-hop and dance pop trends, smashing its way to #1 in several countries, and even recognized by the youth of today, 14 years later. When anyone asks me to create a playlist of throwbacks or something similar, this track is also the one I grab first. It was one of the first songs that got me into chart watching and I still vividly remember obsessing over the track and its parent album. But what about you? What song does your mind gravitate towards when thinking of the decade?

As a pop, r&b, and rap/hip-hop fan I can't answer this question with only one song; my brain simply refuses to put two of the genres on a back burner. I can tell you what songs immediately came to mind for each of those genres though.
- Pop: Bye Bye Bye and Since U Been Gone popped into my head simultaneously - R&b: Yeah! - Hip-hop: In Da Club
Despite being from different genres I think these all capture in a nutshell what 2000s music really was when it was at its biggest and its best. It wasn't just a catchy hook or a killer vocal delivery/flow or tight production - it was ALL of those things hitting you at once. It was never as simple as it seemed. While every other time period in music tried to play it cool for the mainstream, the 2000s said fuck subtlety and got in your face with its mission to win over the masses. It's like someone said that old adage about how you can't please everyone and the 2000s said, 'Challenge accepted!' 2000s music was not a 'put your lighters up' kind of stadium anthem, it was the 'get your ass up and move' anthem that would not stop until you had lost your voice singing every word note-for-note at the top of your lungs. It's kind of ironic that only one of those songs I mentioned was entirely sung by a millennial because it's peak millennial in how everything that 2000s music is often maligned for by others is everything that made it so damn great.

Be Without You by Mary J. Blige
This song is the sound of the 2000s in terms of R&B flavoured Pop, which I usually associate with the 2000s the most. It goes along with We Belong Together by Mariah Carey, So Sick by Ne-Yo, Because of You by Ne-Yo, Take A Bow by Rihanna, Mad - Ne-Yo, etc. Because of You by Ne-Yo is a close second, with Take A Bow by Rihanna in third.
My memory of recognizing certain songs from certain years goes back to 2006, so I recognize the late 00s most of all.
In terms of 2000s music in general, rather than just the first defining sound to come to my mind is Yeah! by Usher, Lil Jon, & Ludacris.

"In the End" by Linkin Park would be the first song that comes to mind. The lyrics in this song are very inspiring and it's really all about living your life to the fullest, While also acknowledging that no matter how hard you try sometimes it just isn't enough. My favorite Mainstream Song of the 2000's without question.

Surprisingly the first song that came to mind was Scars by Papa Roach. If I had to really think about it though probably Yeah! by Usher.

Probably "We Belong Together". The Emancipation of Mimi and her insane comeback is what really made me take notice of the charts and ultimately got me to join as a member here.
"Dilemma", "Crazy In Love", and "Just Dance" also come to mind.

I think Yeah by Usher is the definitive 2000s hit IMO. Not only was it one of the biggest hits of the decade, but it perfectly represents some of the decade's biggest trends, performed by one of the decade's biggest artists. Oh, and it slaps.

After Yeah!, I'd have to say Boulevard of Broken Dreams by Green Day. It's probably the most representative of both the musical and social/generational trends of the 2000s beyond hip-hop and R&B, with the rise of emo rock overtaking post-grunge in popularity and the overall sour wartime mood of the decade.
Honorable Mentions: How You Remind Me - Nickelback Hey Ya! - OutKast Promiscuous - Timbaland ft. Nelly Furtado

Agree with all the “Yeah!” posts. I’ll have to add Britney’s “Toxic” too.
