It's interesting that Jeffrey Steele wrote this and Stick That In Your Country Song, and that Eric Church has a song called Springsteen whom this song is trying to cancel, lol

Debuts at #1 on Billboard Hot Country Songs Jesus Christ HOW?! That's insane. He hasn't even been remotely relevant in a decade. Walker Hayes just went viral with "Fancy Like" and it *only* peaked at #4 so how did this get enough attention out of nowhere to dethrone a Luke Combs hit with millions of audience impressions? This is being streamed/downloaded by the same people who supported Morgan Wallen hence I’m not surprised. They are not supporting him because it’s good, they are supporting him to make a statement

Hey Aaron Lewis we all know that you hate Biden and you voted for and love Trump. We get your message loud and clear with your song. This **** with conservative country singers such as the blowhard John Rich and his other cronies hating everyone has gone on for a long long time. If Aaron wanted controversy he has received it and more importantly shows what a classless and tasteless person he really is both inside and out.

I don't get the hate for this song when another political song just won best song at the Grammy's.

I don't get the hate for this song when another political song just won best song at the Grammy's. We have a highlight and condemnation of police brutality and systemic racism in the US versus... nationalist trite and defense of statues that glorified individuals who were an enemy of the very state they seem to love so much who sought to keep even worse systemic racism through slavery. Get this "both sides!" stuff out of here.

I guess most black on black crime is largely ignored, unfortunately even kids. Cops can't be blamed for everything, you can't criticize all for the actions of one Derek Chauvin.

I was expecting something more shocking lyrically but it's about what I expected; still trash though and his vocals are shit. No redemptive qualities to be found for me. We have a highlight and condemnation of police brutality and systemic racism in the US versus... nationalist trite and defense of statues that glorified individuals who were an enemy of the very state they seem to love so much who sought to keep even worse systemic racism through slavery. I guess most black on black crime is largely ignored, unfortunately even kids. Cops can't be blamed for everything, you can't criticize all for the actions of one Derek Chauvin. Lord knows I am sick and tired of educating people but some of y'all are so quick to let the ignorance fly freely. 1) Black-on-black crime is not ignored; it's a MYTH. What you're referring to is a distortion of "crime by proximity" facts that are used to highlight how most Black homicide victims are killed by Black people while completely disregarding that most White homicide victims are killed by White people, most Latinx killed by other Latinx people, most Asians killed by other Asians, etc. because most of us live around people of our same race and violent crimes are more likely to occur in someone's own neighborhood. It's basic math. 2) Cops are not being blamed for everything. They're being blamed for killing Black people at a rate that is twice as high as it is for White Americans; THREE times as high if we're unarmed and a rate that hasn't decreased a bit in the last 5 years. And, if that doesn't seem disproportionate enough, keep in mind White Americans make up 75% of the U.S. population while Black Americans are barely 14%. So who do we blame for the cops killing Black people at a higher, faster rate if we can't blame them for it? Rhetorical question because this is all the energy I'm expending on this.

I burst out laughing when he sang "am I the only one who quits singin' along every time they play a Springsteen song?". It was so abrupt and unnecessary lmao. It put the cherry on top of this terrible song.

I made it halfway through before I couldn't take any more. This is literally a Fox News comment section turned into a song. I'm honestly disgusted that this song is a #1 hit. Absolutely disgusted.

Based on some of the comments on here I was expecting this to be a Buddy Brown or Creed Fisher like song, The song is good melodically, and I don’t find to be very aggressive. I doubt this will do anything on the airplay charts, but hitting #1 on the Hot Country Songs is definitely an accomplishment.

Unfortunately, this is back in the Top 10 on iTunes, with the second version at #29.

Yikes. Atrocious vocals and even worse lyrics. On top of that, it’s really boring and repetitive. Hard, hard pass.

I just saw Staind live last night and Aaron Lewis was serving up some fantastic vocals, rock music is where this man shines and not country IMO. His voice sounds pretty bad on this track, but he killed it on all my favorite Staind songs last night.

Drops out of Hot 100, lasting only one week. Drops 1-31 on Hot Country Songs, which is possibly below the Bubbling Under.

Shame that this will forever be a blemish on the charts with that #1 debut, but I am grateful that its appeal was clearly 100% front-loaded and it will likely be a quickly-forgotten afterthought.

You can criticize a song but don’t be hateful about it. Years ago I got called out on this forum for trashing an FGL song but was quickly taught by members that hate gets you nowhere on these boards and I learned something from it. But I guess if a song is conservative, hateful posts are celebrated and encouraged now? I have no problem with this song either and the words have weight and a good delivery.

The above post made me check out the lyrics and this lyric is just pure gold:
Am I the only one who can't take no more Screamin', "If you don't like it, there's the fuckin' door"
The entire song this guy is complaining about how the country is. Why doesn't he just take the advice he dishes out in his own god damn song?

Another textbook case of both-sidesism. I'm Canadian and this song makes me feel dirty. I shan't listen again.

Not being able to criticize the country we live in is textbook dictatorship, like living in North Korea. These idiots scream "FREE SPEECH!!!" at every turn yet want to silence any criticism about America. Conservatives not seeing the irony of liking this song is hilarious, like c'mon guys.

Back to #1 and #4 on iTunes. Not sure if it'll re-enter the Hot 100 though. Hope not.

This song really isn't as bad as some of you make it seem or even that offensive, it's better than Tom MacDonald, so that's a positive. I'll even go so far as to say this song could work, raw, unfocused anger at the country changing in ways he doesn't like (while not being explicitly right-wing, like MacDonald) could work in a way and the line about him turning into his dad is a decent start.
But there are still some major problems here:
1. Aaron Lewis has never had the greatest vocals, even on Staind's better songs, and just leaving him with an acoustic guitar backing is not a good idea, especially when he shouts like he's singing a Staind song
2. In this song about general, unfocused anger at a changing America, he focuses his anger on Confederate statues being torn down. Complaining about that is pretty inexcusable, even if that person is a Southerner, but coming from a New Englander like Lewis, it's completely baffling. He doesn't have any "cultural" connection with Robert E. Lee or Stonewall Jackson, so why should he care, especially when they literally committed treason.
3. That Bruce Springsteen line. Saying that you'll stop listening to him for appearing on a podcast with Obama is cancel culture. Springsteen has always been left-leaning and has never denied it, so that line is stupid and sort of irrelevant. If you're going to complain about a singer, complain about someone who is actually having hits.
But at the end of the day, this is a country song, and many country singers probably agree with Lewis, even if they keep their views private. I don't know why people are acting like this was so unexpected or something.

Had a word-wall rant in here but thought better of it after posting it lol. Long story short this song is a complete and utter atrocity, and I am SO sick of the American flag being used as a weapon or pandering tool. That is SO f**king disrespectful to the flag Aaron claims he loves so much, the flag that's supposed to represent liberty and justice for all.

The sanctimonious critique of this song here is, with perfect irony, the exact reason that the song exists and why its themes resonate with a sizeable chunk of (if not the country) the country music audience.
I find the overall sound and sincerity to be appealing but the lyrics to lack polish; I could take or leave the message more generally, but the reference to retaining confederate statues is really quite incongruous and unfortunate.
Still, it would have been nice to see commenters less eager to use a song to launch into a full frontal assault on 50% of the American population, and the 50% from which the majority of country music fans is drawn.
