Who are some artists you once loved, loved their albums and always checked for them but have lost most or all interest in over the years?
My biggest example might be Jason Mraz. Back in 2003, his debut album was probably my favourite that year. I also quite liked his second album. But when his third came out (the one with I’m Yours), I was like ‘meh’. With each subsequent album I was less interested. His most recent album came out last year and it’s the first of his I didn’t buy. I sampled a few tracks and nothing on it interested me. I still occasionally listen to his first two for nostalgia.
Jewel is another one. I enjoyed her albums from Pieces of Me to 0304. Goodbye Alice in Wonderland was the first I didn’t get fully into (though it does have some gems) but then she did that pair of country albums and by then, I just lost interest. I still have all her CDs tho (except the holiday ones) but even now, I rarely get the urge to listen to even her old songs I used to love.

Beyoncé is the one who instantly comes to mind. I used to be a big, massive fan. Beginning with her self-titled album, though, she's released miss after miss after miss for me and her music, or to be perfectly fair to her the vast majority of it, has become a jumbled, pretentious, cacophonous mess. A new release by her used to be a blind buy as far as I was concerned and that's no longer the case. I'm not even sure I'd consider myself a casual fan of hers at this point, or at least the Beyoncé of 2013-onwards.
Alicia Keys released a lot, A LOT of uncatchy, lame, badly-written material after the album Girl On Fire in 2012 to the point I stopped buying her music as well. That said, I really really enjoyed most of her album last year, so I guess I could say I have an interest in whether she will keep it up with her next record. We'll see.

Mumford & Sons never quite hit the same heights after Babel. Wilder Mind was decent, but everything since then I have paid much attention to.

I use to stan Alicia Keys but lost all interest in her half way and i barely even revisit her older material that i loved much less anything else from mother earth and clay and all that ish.
Same with Christina Aguilera.
I guess for me to connect to the music I also have to connect to the person behind the music can't separate it like some can

I'd say Dido. Her Life for Rent CD is still among my top 10 most played albums of all times but after that era she took some time off and when she came back, the music was not as memorable as the last and then she took another extended period off. I guess if she hadn't taken all that time off I might have still had interest but that extended time off made me appreciate her first 2 albums and honestly anything she releases now pales in comparison to those 2.

Avril Lavigne. Love love love a lot of her stuff but Goodbye Lullaby was the last time she held my attention.
P!nk's last album probably killed my interest in her stuff, unless she reworks her material into a more interesting direction.
Alicia Keys has completely lost me (and the public, let's be real) after "Girl on Fire". As I Am was a warning sign because a handful of tracks carried that album. The Element of Freedom was underrated tho.
Kelly Clarkson is so much fun, but her material is very AC and not that innovative anymore. She apparently had a single last year and I never even heard it if I recall correctly. I will always love Breakaway and most of her older singles tho.
Xtina completely lost me after her Greatest Hits album. I liked her Catching Fire soundtrack song, but it's literally the only song of hers I've liked since Back to Basics.
Madonna's new music is not something I even need. Hard Candy was the last time I liked a project of hers. She's got enough classics for me to be a casual fan for life though.
A David Guetta credit guarantees a generic, dated song these days, but for a while he was fire.
And some obvious ones like Alessia Cara, Meghan Trainor, Maroon 5.

Pink is a good example and I wonder if she’s one that might apply to a lot of people. She was really hit-or-miss with me from her debut up until around Who Knew took off. I was gifted the I’m Not Dead CD after it came out and I didn’t listen to it for months because I didn’t care but when I did, I really liked it. So I got every album she’s released since. I think the Beautiful Trauma album was the last one I liked from her but even that one I didn’t listen to much. I respect her as a performer but I’ve mainly just gotten bored with her.
Avril won me over hard with her first two albums but lost me at Girlfriend. I still root for her though.
Celine is one I’d maybe put her too. She was my fav ™️ back in the 90s but by the time the 2000s arrived, I was soooo over her. Around the mid-2010s I gradually warmed up to her again. I care nearly zero about new material she puts out but I can listen to most of her 90s hits and love every second!
Some others: -John Newman -Nicki Minaj - I’ll check for new music if it’s her own album but the random one-offs and features I’m okay skipping -the killers - I was never huge on them but loved their singles. At some point, I think I just moved on. The same applies to a lot of rock bands for me tho. I LOVED Green Day during the American idiot era, and thought unos, dos, tres, was a great concept, but it all eventually blends together for me. Same with foo fighters, U2. My two favourite rock bands, our lady peace and blue October, I still check out when they drop new music, but I find myself revisiting their old dependable classics more often than newer stuff.

-Nicki Minaj - I’ll check for new music if it’s her own album but the random one-offs and features I’m okay skipping THIS! And it also applies to Drake, but tbh Drake is even worse because his albums have progressively gotten worse to the point where that Certified Lover Boy I'll probably skip unless some single actually catches my attention. Both have some of the best rap albums of the past few years ( Take Care and The Pinkprint, and both also experimented with Pop successfully), I just don't get the same engagement anymore.

Both have some of the best rap albums of the past few years ( Take Care and The Pinkprint, and both also experimented with Pop successfully), I just don't get the same engagement anymore. I find I lose interest when artists start releasing a lot of one-off singles and random tracks. Like, I used to check for Sia releases until they just got to be too many all the time. And I know that’s totally on me because if it’s truly about the music, I should be able to enjoy songs regardless of how they’re put out. But to me it lacks investment, direction, and admittedly, hype does play into how much I enjoy music in many cases - even if it’s personal hype (since many of my favs aren’t big enough to have “hype”). Music is both a personal and social thing so I think having some level of artist investment and willingness to push something plays into how I experience music. When an album or song is dropped for example and then that’s it, no promotion, no follow up, nothing, it’s hard for me to care when it seems like no one else does - especially the artist. And I think that’s how I feel about most one-off releases and random tracks that show up out of nowhere on streaming sites and go nowhere anywhere else.

Shakira-Haven’t liked a song since the She Wolf era. Maroon 5-their last great songs were “Maps” & “Animals” back in 2014. Avril Lavigne-After the Goodbye Lullaby era haven’t liked much since. Gwen Stefani-Since her 2nd solo album, lots of bad songs released and the No Doubt comeback in 2012 was an disappointment.

I completely dropped Gaga during her “Art Pop” era. This was the most drastic artist I can think of because I really stanned for her during The FM/TFM, loved the album “Born This Way” too (but didn’t care for the visuals/aesthetics.) I didn’t check/listen to her at all during “Joanne” and all the jazz stuff she was doing.
“Shallow” was a good moment though and one I enjoyed. But I never got familiar with the “A Star is Born” soundtrack and the movie is so overrated. I got into “Chromatica” somewhat. It was a nice improvement over the music post 2013. But again the videos/aesthetics were unbearable. At this point it’s too little too late for me. I’m certainly just a casual fan who stans her catalog from 2008-2011.

I used to be OBSESSED with Bjork. I thought Medulla was just okay and then Volta made me lose all interest. I haven't even listened to her last three albums tbh. I've heard good things about the last two, I might get around to it one day.

I agree with a lot of the acts that have been mentioned here (Alicia Keys for sure), but I probably lose interest in most artist's new material once they appear to be a few albums past their peak. I'll probably check out the lead single, but unless I love it I'm definitely not looking forward to their albums like I used to.. and if I'm listening to the album and tracks are not clicking within a minute, I'll just skip to the next one. I can't really think of any acts that I used to love, lost interest in new material, and then also lost interest in the old material I used to love.

Totally agreed about Beyoncé. I was a super fan during the B'day era, but started losing interest in her music when the self titled album came. I still like her as a person, but I just can't get into the kind of music she is making nowadays. Her older stuff was much better, even better when she was with DC. Second, I'd say Madonna. I still consider myself a fan of hers, but the interest is not quite the same as when I was much younger. From when I was 10 and in my teen years, I used to be a super die hard stan. It's like I couldn't get enough of her. I would literally absorb anything in relation to her...fansites, magazines, photos, albums, singles, interviews, music videos, etc. Since the MDNA era and onward, I don't invest my time and energy that much into her like before. I still enjoy listening to all her albums pre-MDNA from time to time. Third, Britney, I still like her music, but I don't invest that much into her like when I did in middle and high school.

I agree with Beyonce, although I was with her through "Self Titled" - after the original album was released, I have only liked **1** song ("6 Inch"). I used to stan Backstreet Boys but after the death of Teen Pop, I was over them. I was also a huge Britney Spears fan up until "Hold it Against Me" - I haven't liked a song by her since that single came out. Actually, there are only 2 artists that have kept my interest from the time I've discovered them to well past their primes, through sick and sin - those are Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey.

That's an interesting point about artists you just kind of move on from despite loving the older material that probably got you into them. With Alanis Morissette, for example, I definitely listen more to her older stuff than her newer albums. I'd say most of my listening time to her is to her first 4 albums, with the last 3 getting decreasingly less time. My other fav from the 90s, Chantal Kreviazuk, is much the same way. First four albums are still regular plays. The next three, much less (in particular the most recent one, zero interest in that). Yet, I'll still always check for them, which is why I didn't initially include them in my first list.
But there are others who seem to have broken that chain for me. KT Tunstall, Amy Macdonald, Kathleen Edwards, and Tegan and Sara have pretty much kept my interest to the point where their newer albums are as significant to me as their initial ones - with some variation, however I've noticed that for each of them I haven't given *as much* attention as the earlier ones so that might be a sign that I'm gradually moving on from them. So far, Brandi Carlile and Lady Gaga are probably the ones whose new albums are still as major, if not moreso, than many of their others. I'd say I spend more time listening to their more recent releases than their old stuff, which isn't usually the norm.

When I like an artist, it's actually pretty rare for me to drop them entirely even when the material deteriorates (as it always does). Generally I gravitate to big voices, and they can elevate subpar material, which kind of offsets the fact that aging pop acts get lesser material handed to them.
Lady Gaga is the one where I feel my interest level has shifted the most dramatically. I loved her back with The Fame, but it was like I was practically forcing myself to buy Chromatica. I haven't really liked most of the pop material she's put out post-ARTPOP. There were only a couple of songs from ASIB that I got anything out of at all--and "Shallow" wasn't one of them. I actually enjoyed Joanne more than ASiB / Chromatica even if it didn't compare to The Fame/TFM/ARTPOP.

I wouldn’t say lost interest because Beyoncé usually has a song here or there that I enjoy, but overall, I don’t ever have a desire to go back and revisit her catalog. The replay value isn’t there for me.

Eminem - Was a fan of his 1999-2004 material. Anything he's done in the past 15 years, such as those duets with Rihanna, forget about it. Madonna - Anything post-2000 related to her. Puff Daddy/P.Diddy/Diddy - Was a fan of any Bad Boy relasted in the 90s and early 00s but after he kept changing his name, I lost interest in him.

90's - Alanis Morissette (I agree with DISCO on this)
00's - Justin Timberlake, Madonna, Timbaland (Got tired of hearing 4 mins of them over & over, that I just gave them up at the same time)
10's - Florida (Like enough to give up!!)

I can't think of any I've dropped completely/almost completely. For those I've lost interest in, it generally just applies to new releases rather than their catalogs.
Jessie J/Nicki Minaj - Probably the best examples for this thread. I was much more into them like 8/9 years ago (Who You Are/Roman Reloaded). Those albums have not necessarily aged well, and I don't really check for them aside from some singles here and there.
Nelly Furtado - Her first few albums are still great, but for whatever I never got around to her newer work aside from a couple of tracks.
Sia - I was into her music around 1000FOF/TIA, but I don't check for the 37 new soundtrack songs she releases monthly.
Tove Lo - This is a case of fluctuation. I was obsessed with QotC, Lady Wood didn't hold my interest, Blue Lips was great for the most part, and Sunshine Kitty has some great tracks, but I don't feel compelled to go back to it much. Still looking forward to her next album.
P!nk - Another one that fluctuates. I wasn't crazy about TTAL, but I absolutely loved Beautiful Trauma. H2BH didn't have a ton of replay value for me. I appreciate P!nk more for her incredible talent as a performer than anything at this point. Very curious about the direction her next album will take, though.
Beyoncé - Didn't have much interest in The Carters or The Gift, but I still listen to her catalog a lot. I'm sure her next proper album will reignite any lost interest--if we ever get it.

It’s amazing how many artists just stopped releasing stuff that held my interest exactly around the end of the 2000s. Green Day, RHCP, P!nk, Kelly Clarkson, John Legend, Ne-Yo, Madonna, Britney Spears, Timbaland, Christina Aguilera, Linkin Park, etc. I don’t know what it is about the year 2010, but it seems like so many artists have a line at that exact year dividing their classics from the “past their prime” filler.
