I have to say I'm really surprised and shocked at Doja's stability on streaming.

I have to say I'm really surprised and shocked at Doja's stability on streaming. I think Doja's stability comes from the fact that she's one of the only female pop stars that is cool to straight dudes, and straight white dudes especially. Like not just "guilty pleasure," but straight dudes actually don't feel bad about listening to her and have no shame telling people they listen to her. At least in my circle of friends that's how it is.

Now this is a subject I'd like to see thinkpieces about--an examination of the demographics of Doja Cat's streaming popularity.

I would have never guessed that Doja Cat, a mixed-race, openly-bisexual female rapper, would appeal heavily to straight white dudes. I suppose I can see it if they're in the Gen Z demographic and know her songs from TikTok, but I find that really interesting.

I can't let myself trust early predictions, especially predictions posted on Tuesday, but if Essence ends up getting to the top 20 this week I'd be ecstatic

Why is Steve Lacyβs Dark Red gaining on Spotify? I have not heard it on TikTok.

I think it's kinda incredible how fast Doja has blown up and is pretty close to a Household name. Imagine hearing Moo the first time and then knowing only THREE years later she has the record for most Daily WW streams for a female rapper, not Nicki Megan or Cardi but Doja Cat π.

Why is Steve Lacyβs Dark Red gaining on Spotify? I have not heard it on TikTok. It's been used in 40k TikToks. Songs can blow up on TikTok and completely miss people because the algorithm can make each person's FYP look so different.

Like I don't have some sort of identity crisis when I listen to Radiohead even though I'm outside their main audience demographic. Because Thom Yorke having a Y Chromosome doesn't make the music sound less good.

I think it's also because Doja is more online than your average pop star, she's a lot like Lil Nas X where she utilizes social media and platforms like TikTok to push memes and "relatable" videos. She markets herself pretty good to a Gen Z audience.

Doja definitely has the best media presence and the good thing is that she doesn't act problematic for the most part unlike some of her peers
Between her, Megan, and Lizzo the female rap game is evolving and all three have achieved a great deal in terms of having an image and online presence. We love to see them all winning.

It's best when they don't tear each other down and just make good music.

Recently, I learned he loves "Stay With Me / Mayonaka No Door" by Miki Matsubara. I didn't know this before because he doesn't play it out loud, only on headphones. He admitted he also likes Mary J. Blige. He said he liked a few verses by Foxy Brown in ~2019, but denies he ever said that now in 2021. I feel partially bad for him and partially annoyed as shit over it. Like, the patriarchy is super harmful, but also fucking get over your sexist self. Put your big boy pants on, y'know?

Levitating doesn't quite feel like the biggest to me, even though it was by the metrics. I guess it was just cause I don't listen to radio, and it was biggest there (although obv still huge on streaming and sales). For me the biggest feeling was probably G4U. "Levitating" was also never truly huge at one specific point, and we all know in terms of the charts its biggest asset is longevity. I think longevity is tougher to 'feel' than something that is huge in a moment. (Not to say "g4u" hasn't had longevity, but it clearly had a huge specific peak and has been declining, whereas "L" has been generally popular for a long time.)

I don't think doja/lizzo's accomplishments are as impressive as cardi/meg who rap 2 or 3 verses on every song + a rapping chorus
