For taylor : Hello? Janie Frickie or Steve Wariner for Indiana. Never heard of either of those people. I stand corrected anyway, since apparently Karen Fairchild from LBT is from Indiana.

Most of my country music knowledge comes from some 90s country (mostly women) and most 2000s and beyond as I didn't really love country music until about 2006 or 2007.

Well, we both stand corrected then, as Steve Wariner sent ten songs during his career to #1 on the country charts and has won four Grammy Awards throughout his career...all while having been born in Noblesville. He was most successful during the 1980s, which is why our young asses don't know much about him, because the only 80s people we most certainly know about are George and Reba

He was most successful during the 1980s, which is why our young asses don't know much about him, because the only 80s people we most certainly know about are George and Reba I am dead at y'all not even having HEARD OF Janie Fricke and especially Steve Wariner Like, Steve Wariner has been in nearly all of the '90s year-end rankdowns we've done. I know you both haven't done many 90s rankdowns, but the fact remains that he is a name that has at least been written down semi-regularly on this forum in places that you frequent. "Holes In The Floor Of Heaven" was brought up, and that is one of those huge hits that may as well have been a 2000s hit, like George's "Write This Down", Martina's "I Love You" and Faith Hill's "Breathe"/"The Way You Love Me". Like, I literally had it in my head that it was from like 2004 because I remember hearing it aaaaallll over the radio around then, and it's honestly news to me looking it up just now and seeing that it was from 1998! Like, I don't know any of his material from the '80s, but he's definitely not a name that disappeared after the '80s. Janie Fricke's a little bit more understandable, as the only reason I'm familiar with her at all is because she's one of those artists who basically has taken up a residency at the Opry in her old age Seriously, she's on the roster for like four out of every five nights. She was there when I got to go a couple years ago. So I couldn't tell you any of her hits, but that's how I've heard of her. Also taylor there was a Janie Fricke discussion in Reba's album rankdown thread a few weeks ago because apparently she was the original singer of "She's Single Again", and I watched the music video and determined that she reminded me of Blanche from the Golden Girls in the video 😂😂😂 “She’s Single Again” was also released on Janie Fricke album same year (1985) and was a single. Also made a video! youtu.be/jP6Ncx5VmNEJanie's giving me major Rue McClanahan vibes in this video!

For taylor and raylatch98: I have a TON of Janie Frickie and Steve Wariner music on my phone. It would take several hours for me to play all the songs for you. I have been a fan of both artists for years.

Ok I went through the top 300 country artist of all time (based on Billboard charts using the Whitburn point system).
There's not someone from* each state but here's the biggest for each.
*"From" meaning born in, not necessarily grew up in. (#'s are Current Whitburn Standings)
Alabama - Alabama (#19) Arizona - Marty Robbins (#16) Arkansas - Johnny Cash (#4) California - Merle Haggard (#6) Florida - Mel Tillis (#37) Georgia - Alan Jackson (#15) Illinois - Rex Allen Jr. (#196) Indiana - Steve Wariner (#51) Kansas - Martina McBride (#59) Kentucky - Loretta Lynn (#25) Louisiana - Tim McGraw (#8) Massachusetts - Emily Strayer of The Chicks (#152) Michigan - Jeff Hanna of The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band (#154) Minnesota - Paulette Carlson of Highway 101 (#238) Mississippi - Conway Twitty (#5) Missouri - Porter Wagoner (#41) Nebraska - Tompall Glaser & The Glaser Bros. (#283) New Mexico - John Denver (#236) New Jersey - Clint Black (#54) New York - Eddie Rabbitt (#67) North Carolina - Ronnie Milsap (#30) Ohio - Jay DeMarcus & Gary LeVox of Rascal Flatts (#48) Oklahoma - Reba McEntire (#7) Oregon - Susan Raye (#215) Pennsylvania - Joe Bonsall of The Oak Ridge Boys (#64) South Carolina - Bill Anderson (#34) Tennesse - Eddy Arnold (#1) Texas - George Jones (#2) Utah - Marie Osmond (#285) Virginia - The Statler Brothers (#49) West Virginia - Brad Paisley (#42) Wisconsin - Dave Dudley (#127)

After thinking about it, I think I might actually give Washington to Brandy Clark! Lila is by far one of the bigger country "radio" stars to come from Washington, probably moreso than Brandy... But Brandy's songwriting success has been much more prolific than Lila's radio career ever was, and has sustained her career for like 3-4 times as long by now, lol. I'm not sure if songwriting careers count for the purposes of this thread necessarily, but Brandy has managed to maintain a decently high profile as a recording artist as well through the years despite most of her radio attention just being as a songwriter.

I'd agree that Brandy has had a bigger career than Lila, this is why the method in measuring how they're the "biggest" could yield very different results. My list is one way that is pretty objective because it measures them all equally. Though even the point system has one little flaw in that it measures the chart but the chart itself has changed methodology over the years so that does mean older artists had a slight advantage in points but more modern artists may have had a bigger impact because they had more ways to make an impact (videos, online engagement, more television etc.)

Nebraska - Tompall Glaser & The Glaser Bros. (#283) I've mentioned this before in passing, but my brother is married to a Glaser. Tompall is probably the more famous of the three as he was on the Wanted! The Outlaws album along with Willie, Waylon, and Jessie Colter. The other brother, Jim, did have some success in the early 80s himself and even won the ACM Best New Male Vocalist award in 1984. He actually passed away a couple of years ago and I was with my brother and his wife celebrating her 50th birthday in South Padre Island when she got the call that he had died. Anyways, I'm not surprised to see them included here on the list.

Every time I see one of their names I instantly think of you btw I'm a little surprised they're like the only artist I've come across so far from Nebraska. I know it seems the states with smaller populations seem to be the ones I still haven't found a lot of so far but I just felt like Nebraska would have more lol Same with Colorado tbh.

A lot of people might argue with me that Patsy Cline or Mary Chapin Carpenter should be Virginia but I’d have to say it should be Ricky Van Shelton. Although she lives in Virginia now, Mary Chapin Carpenter was actually born in Princeton, New Jersey.
