Was Despacito the greatest summer smash ever?

Despacito is the correct answer, but you’re just gonna leave out Old Town Road?

Despacito (or Old Town Road) may be the objectively biggest summer smash of all time, but there will likely never be another song that screams "summer smash" more to me than this:

Out of the choices given, it's 100% "Despacito".

The thing about Old Town Road is that it wasn’t #1 throughout the entire summer, charting at #3 and #4 during the final 2 weeks of August. Had OTR closed the deal and been the #1 through the end of August, would have had a case with the 21 weeks at #1 over Despacito’s 16. However, it didn’t, so Despacito gets the nod since it was #1 all of the summer (June, July, and August), and even had weeks at #1 in both May and September to boot.

yes because being #1 for the entire summer is the only way to tell if the song was a huge summer smash

Yeah, the numbers say "Despacito", but reading the question the first song that came to mind was "California Gurls", for what it's worth.

So despite being number one #1 for more than 2/3 of the summer, because it wasn't number one in those last weeks, it obviously isn't a summer smash

The correct answer by your own definition of summer (June, July, and August) is and always will be We Belong Together. Do not send me at.
But I can't help but laugh because someone doesn't understand when the actual dates of summer are. (WBT would still be the answer. Do not send me at.) And if you're going by chart dates you're even more off since the charts are always dated ahead of real time.
And this is without mentioning that you reached deep into the crevices of Hot 100 history your ass to pull out a Bobby Lewis song that didn't even reach number one until mid-July.

I'll Be Missing You, The Boy Is Mine and Tossin & Turnin are #1-#3 on Billboard's Greatest Songs of The Summer all time list
Despacito - The OPs personal favorite is #5
My problem with "Songs of The Summer" Hot 100 charts is that it is more a benefit of timing on the calendar than actually being a "Summer" song or about or related to warm weather. Many more deserving songs than those 4 as #1 song of the "summer" all-time.

Despacito was everywhere during its time. I don't know about the others but my vote surely goes to this one.

Many more deserving songs than those 4 as #1 song of the "summer" all-time. If that's the criteria he used for the poll...well for one what was the purpose of the poll since Billboard literally already answered the question for him lmao. But no, if that's really how he selected these songs then why not just say that when people start questioning it, instead of going around the world to talk about weeks spent at #1 within a certain time frame to justify his argument...and he also very conveniently skipped over song #4 (Blurred Lines) on that GOAT summer list so really what was his point? I think he saw a list, he liked one song on the list, and he wanted to make a poll where that one song would win so he excluded the one other song that he felt might be the biggest threat (BL was a definitively enormous summer smash...no one said it had to age well). Instead he got a thread talking about three other songs that aren't in the poll. That BB list is not only weighted (with no disclosure of said weight) but it also uses an inverse point system for 1958-1991 so I don't think most people here would care to use it to define the 'biggest' summer smash (despite my own 'do not send me at' quip I'm aware this is really very subjective). This is too many variables for me. Not crazy about the inverse system but it doesn't seem very sensible to use inverse for some years and points for others. Either concede that anything pre-SS can't be fully measured, or acknowledge that inverse is not perfect but the closest we'd get to measuring all years on an apples-to-apples basis. For a SOTS list I think the inverse system would be sufficient.

I voted for "Despacito."
"California Gurls," "Umbrella," "Crazy in Love" and "Hot in Herre" stick out.

Also, don’t forget that airplay only songs were ineligible to chart in 1997 and 1998. This only strengthens the argument for Despacito being the #1 summer smash of all time. Despacito was ranked higher on the all-time chart than every song above it. Not to mention, its run at #1 outspans every song above it. The fact that IBMY and TBIM were ranked #1 and #2 is a travesty, especially considering they probably wouldn’t have spent that many weeks at #1 if AirPlay only songs were counted.

From what I've heard I'll Be Missing You was inescapable during its time
The Boy Is Mine was also everywhere, not as much as I'll Be Missing You but TBIM was inescapable from what I've heard.
