I’m wondering … how in tf do u accumulate that many points in 1 week what ?? 😭 anybody got the stats for it’s first few weeks? Week 1 10/11/97 - 3.5 million sold and 31 million audience impressions in airplay (and 18 million impressions for the b-side) Week 2 10/18/97 - 1.2 million sold...outsold the #2 by more than 750% Week 3 10/25/97 - 786,000 sold (5.4 million total) and nearly 24 million audience impressions (and 23 million impressions for the b-side) For comparison's sake, here are some other totals for #1 songs/debuts in that same time period: "Honey" (Mariah Carey) 9/13/97 - 137,000 sold (#1 debut) "4 Seasons of Loneliness" (Boyz II Men) 9/27/97 - 125,000 sold (#2 debut behind "Honey")

If Drake can release two hours after the beginning of the tracking period surely Ed Sheeran can release two hours before it.

For comparison's sake, here are some other totals for #1 songs/debuts in that same time period: "Honey" (Mariah Carey) 9/13/97 - 137,000 sold (#1 debut) "4 Seasons of Loneliness" (Boyz II Men) 9/27/97 - 125,000 sold (#2 debut behind "Honey") How do other long-running #1’s at the time, like IBMY and TBIM, compare? "Hypnotize" 5/3/97 - 125,000 sold (moved up to #1 in sales and on Hot 100) "MMMBop" 5/24/97 - 140,000 sold and 50 million audience impressions "I'll Be Missing You" 6/14/97 - 220,000 sold (#1 debut)...to that point it was the second biggest sales total for a #1 Hot 100 debut, behind the 229,000 debut total of "Fantasy" ("CITW" then of course blew them all away) "The Boy is Mine" 6/6/98 - 307,000 sold (sales debut, moved 23-1 on Hot 100)

No. Hello managed to be in the 2015 Hot 100 year-end at #35 with only 3 weeks charted. Hello was massive! Sometimes i wonder if it could’ve challenged Uptown Funk and Thinking Out Loud if all 10 of its weeks at #1 were counted for the 2015 YE. It was in the top 10 in the 2016 YE, so if its weeks counted for that year, i think it could’ve been a locked #1 right there. I’m glad it was split because making the year end in just 3 weeks and especially at #35 is just legendary.

It may have challenged See You Again and Thinking Out Loud, but nothing was ever going to touch Uptown Funk. That song was just an outlier for it’s time, and had all of its weeks counted for the 2015 YE. Heck, I’m not even 100% sure BL’s 2020 would have beat out UF’s 2015.

In terms of the 1990s and early 2000s, I believe these are the only singles certified 3x platinum or higher, and "CITW" sold 3.5 million its first week: "Candle in the Wind 1997" - 11 million "I Will Always Love You" - 4x platinum "Whoomp There It Is" - 4x platinum "Macarena" - 4x platinum "Gangsta's Paraside" - 3x platinum "How Do I Love" - 3x platinum "I'll Be Missing You" - 3x platinum "Everything I Do" - 3x platinum korbel16

1997 must have been a weak if a song with less than 10 weeks managed to end as the biggest song of the year even if a song is massive like Candle in the Wind was. The average #1s in the 1997 had 15,000 - 31,000 points. Tanooki estimated CIDW has debuted with 347,000 points. (Using the simple format by predictors on twitter that is 3,470 points.) And the song had more than 1M sales in week 2 aswell.
This may help some of you who are good at crunching numbers and doing chart points. In the 11/22/97 issue it is mentioned that the difference between "Candle in the Wind" at #1 and "You Make Me Wanna" at #2 is 4,174 chart points. "CITW" sold 186,000 copies (down from 249,000 the week before). It lost about 6,270 chart points. That week 87% of the chart points for "CITW" were from sales. Additionally, by that point "Something in the Way..." was listed as the lead single, and it had 30 million impressions that week. "You Make Me Wanna" sold 118,000 copies and was #7 in Airplay with 55 million impressions. By the way "Fly" and "Tubthumping" were #1 and #2 in Airplay that week, both with 87 million impressions. That just gives an idea of what those stats were at the time. I think airplay and sales were evenly counted in that 87 million impressions was basically equal to 87,000 in sales, but someone correct me if I'm wrong. Perhaps even more of interest to you is that the next week "Tubthumping" was #1 in Airplay with 93 million impressions. It was eligible to chart on the Hot 100 because of a limited 12-inch single. It was #6 on the Hot 100 that week. So, that gives a good indication of what a big airplay-only single would have done at the if eligible to chart.

For what it’s worth, here is mikerivera’s 2015 J-D Year-End list: pulsemusic.proboards.com/post/7320119This gives Hello 7 weeks at #1, and as you can see, Uptown Funk still has almost 3x as many points as Hello. Safe to say that even if you added the final 3 weeks at #1, Hello was never going to come close to challenging UF.

Didn't really know where to post this although not related, but check out the song "Somebody that you don't know" from the collab album of dvsn & Dolla $ign, ft Rauw Alejandro. I see that one growing in the future, just like how "Chosen" is doing now. The song's a mood

They decided to do the video at the exact same time he's doing the NFL concert, I might need to give Shivers another listen to form an opinion on it.

I've always thought Ed's dislike was a bit overemphasized on the internet-sphere, but these 2 singles so far are so bland and faceless imo.
It also seems like he'll be once again repeating the X/Divide plan of having the huge wedding ballad be released post-album release.

Not nearly as good as Bad Habits, and the video even cornier, but I'll have to give it a few more listens to see how it sits with me.

“Hello” was massive and nothing like it has been witnessed since! It sold over 1 million in digital sales. Groundbreaking.

Do we expect the BB tally to be close to 700M too? Yes, especially since they include video streams. Way 2 Sexy should have gotten around 10 million video streams give or take. The rest of the album was also uploaded on his YouTube channel and probably got another 10m+ US video streams. If HITS isn't off with audio streams the Billboard total should be past 700m.
