Vulture ranks UTT as the best original Christmas song since AIWFCIY: 1. Kelly Clarkson, “Underneath the Tree” (2013)Mariah Carey isn’t the only one giving Mariah Carey a run for her crown. Enter: Kelly Clarkson. Every year, there’s more proof that American Idol should have just called it off after its first season — not because of the show itself, but because of the way Clarkson, who won the televised singing contest’s inaugural season, has proven herself to be the ultimate pop star with her up-for-anything attitude and powerhouse voice. Wrapped in Red, Clarkson’s 2013 holiday album, was another example of Clarkson nailing the pop-star ideal. She duetted with Reba and Trisha, covered the solemn “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” and the cheeky “Run Run Rudolph,” and even snuck in an Imogen Heap cover. “In my career, especially since Idol, everyone’s like, ‘Are you pop? Are you country? Are you rock?’ I think that’s what’s cool about the Christmas record — I didn’t have to pick,” Clarkson, whose battles for creative control with her then-label RCA had racked up headlines in the late ’00s, said during a 2013 appearance on Today. One of the originals on the record, the Clarkson/Greg Kurstin co-write “Underneath the Tree,” has all the right elements: chiming sleigh bells, sound-bolstering backup singers, lyrics that outline her loneliness. (At the time of its release, she was married to Brandon Blackstock — who inspired the track “Winter Dreams (Brandon’s Song) — but she noted on Today that she’d been alone for six and a half years before that, thanks to the vagaries of pop-star life.) “Underneath the Tree” doesn’t reinvent the Christmas-song template, but its willingness to revel in tradition while showcasing modern pop’s sparkle is a big part of why it’s the most worthy heir to “All I Want for Christmas Is You.”

This week's Billboard : - Underneath The Tree returns at #48 on Hot 100 - Wrapped In Red also does at #91 on Billboard 200 - Santa, Can't You Hear Me gets its highest position as #12 on AC
UTT already peaked at #12 last season and I'm very looking for watching its growth every year!

I think what’s so impressive about UTT’s continued success is that it’s without any promo, no proper music video, RCA not having the physical album in stores every season, no Spotify or Apple Music graphics, no recent performances outside of her show or special, little to no intentional playlisting. It’s all organic! It’s just that massive of a song!
It seems Atlantic is going to take this same promo approach with SCYHM! 😤😤😤

So crazy how quickly this is becoming a Christmas classic! When did AIWFCIY really become a Christmas staple? I feel like UTT has become a staple in less time. I wonder if/when there is a time Kelly can re-record UTT and profit from its promotion? Would love a real video for it! Also crazy to think that WIR will be a decade old next October! WCCA could neva be that iconic!

Not to underscore UTT's success but it's easier to become a staple on the charts now since Mariah's song wasn't eligible for them until a few years ago.
But there's no denying that Kelly's song (and Ariana's) are leading the pack in terms of newer Xmas classics.

So crazy how quickly this is becoming a Christmas classic! When did AIWFCIY really become a Christmas staple? I feel like UTT has become a staple in less time. Depends on how you define 'staple,' but if you want to take a pure chart take on it, this is genuinely the correct answer: So crazy how quickly this is becoming a Christmas classic! When did AIWFCIY really become a Christmas staple? I feel like UTT has become a staple in less time. 1994 AIWFCIY has appeared on at least one Billboard chart every year since its release. Its initial chart appearances were on HAC and Radio Songs, as old Hot 100 rules rendered it ineligible to chart there. Once the H100 rules changed to allow airplay-only singles to chart, AIWFCIY made its first appearance the next holiday season (which in itself was impressive for a five-year old Christmas song with no physical single, during a time when there was no such thing as a 'Christmas song takeover'). After that, it charted in the top 10 on Hot 100 Recurrents every year until Billboard started allowing holiday songs to re-chart on the current Hot 100 again. The Daily Telegraph named it the UK's most played holiday song of the 2000s decade, indicating it entered the 21st century already a budding classic there. Now, the more hard-to-define moment where it became noticeably ubiquitous to the general public and not just a regular AI repeat on your AC station's playlist - I'd probably say it took ~11 years. I think Mariah smashing with The Emancipation of Mimi in 2005 also spilled over into that year's holiday season and gave AIWFCIY a turbo boost that ended up becoming permanent. AIWFCIY topped Digital Songs that year, and that is also the first year it began not only reaching the top ten on, but topping Hot 100 Recurrents...a convo better reserved for Mariah's thread but we lambs really should have a discussion one day about how TEOM's legacy runs even deeper than we give it credit for. That comeback album is indirectly why Mariah became the Queen of Christmas. To bring this back to Kelly though, while I'm not going to say UTT is moving as fast as or faster than AIWFCIY, it is nonetheless very impressive how well UTT continues to do with virtually no effort and Kelly herself somewhat competing 'against' it with subsequent releases. UTT is kind of a similar situation with 2000s AIWFCIY, where the artist in question is no longer on the label that released the song and there's not much incentive on either end to continually push it. I do wonder how long it will take for UTT to eventually nab a top 10 Hot 100 peak. There's hardly any competition from non-seasonal releases this year (the points UTT had last year at its peak would be enough to be top 5 this week), but she seems 'stuck' at #11 when looking at Christmas songs only. I think the point difference gets fairly narrow in the lower top 10/upper teens range the final one or two holiday chart weeks, so maybe even just one little thing like performing it on Kellyoke the week of Christmas could give it enough of a boost. An anniversary single for a quick sales boost could also push it in, but that would require some extra effort and coordination with RCA that I don't expect to happen. A re-recording will count as a separate chart entry and is not likely to do nearly as well as the original (see AIWFCIY 'extra festive' mix) so I don't think it would be worth it to try that and I'm sure Atlantic feels the same; they would rather try their chances with a new song altogether.

I didn't realize Kelly didn't do a single music video for WCCA. I guess I get it but I really wish we got ONE preferably for SCYHM. What I would give to hear her sing these Christmas classics live.

The fact that Dolly is 76 and still sounding like that is truly just incredible. I know she was never in the same vocal "league" as the big belters, but talk about consistency. That interview was so sweet.

Watching the episode now. Kelly dropped a little nugget about her next album! They were talking about women being able to speak their mind and how it’s not always been that way. Kelly mentioned her Mom wasn’t even able to, and Dolly says well girl you’re more than making up for it! Kelly blurts out “Oh well you should hear my next album…..”
Give me that angry album already!

Seems like she wasn't able to be at the studio to meet Cher. :'(
+) She actually confirmed during the intro that she got Covid. I really hope she's better by now.

Anyone know what's up for next week? TV Passport + Zap2It have the week listed as new episodes, but nothing about the covers. Is she still out sick and they're doing Kellyoke Encores?

Jason said on Miss Indepodcast that they would be doing Christmas Kellyokes, including hers, just no repeats from any they've done before. Wonder if they'll make an UTT exception.

Zap2it has it up now. I think they're a little up in the air with parts of the shows since she's still out. Mon - It's Raining Men Tue - Finesse (encore) Wed - Lost in the Fifties Tonight (In the Still of the Night) Thu - Hopelessly Devoted To You (encore) Fri - Ordinary World Wednesday and Friday film on Monday so hopefully she's able to be there again. The Kellyoke Afterparty last night was fun again. They did a deep dive into 9 to 5 and at one point played Kelly's raw vocals before all the tricks are done to the tracks to get the final version. He mentioned that there's a Kelly Classic coming up and the reason there hasn't been so far this season is because he honestly forgot about them. Kelly popped up in the chat too.
