I think PXP was a lot more cohesive sonically than people give it credit for. I think AIEW or even Stronger for example is more of a collection of songs than PXP.

I mean.. the weak points of PxP were - Kelly's post pregnancy vocals - Kelly's limited involvement - Just like T and AIEW, it didn't really have a direction. It was kind of like a collection of songs. Don't forget the very dated and not very interesting production. There are a few gems there, but mostly the album sounds like a bunch of quickly put together tracks tailor made for a 2015 Adidas store inside a dying mall playlist. Which is generally a shame because I feel like a lot of them would be really great with stronger production. We even have evidence of that being the case with the Idol version of PBP and the tour version of Tightrope.

I know 'Piece by Piece" is not a favorite in Kelly's catalogue but I quite enjoy the album. It is definitely made for the radio for the most part but I don't mind.

Same. I love most of the production on PBP. It’s not a perfect album (Looking at you in particular “Invincible” and “Run Run Run”), but there are a lot of high (no pun intended) moments for me.
“Someone” is a career highlight featuring some of the best lyrics on a KC song (thank you Matthew Koma!) and her vocal is just breathtaking. The way the production also wraps around her on that one is incredible too. I also think that album has the best collection of ballads (“Someone”, “Piece By Piece”, “Tightrope [Tour Version]*”, “Good Goes The Bye”, and “In The Blue”).
It’s also just a really fun record in general to me, for what that’s worth lol.
Edit: For me personally, I’d love to see her continue sonically in the direction of the Kellyoke EP - which features the best vocal production in her entire career. Thank you Jason for that! I also think the EP perfectly blended her soulful side (“Call Out My Name”, “Blue Bayou”) and pop rock side (“Happier Than Ever, “Fake Plastic Trees”, “Queen Of The Night”).

PXP (continued) excites me because I absolutely need more of the following energy:
-Good Goes The Bye -Let Your Tears Fall -In The Blue -Piece by Piece (album version - sorry the drums go off!) -War Paint -Take You High
Absolute smashes, all of them!
Bad Reputation gives me light Bruno Mars vibes, which is why I don't like it. Sorry!

I know some think that the extra production distracts from her emotional delivery of the song, but it couldn’t be more opposite for me. The orchestra behind her, the Tom drums that echo throughout, and the layered BGVs do so much for me and enhance an already powerful song.

Let us not forget about "Second Wind" that should have been on the standard version!

The orchestral elements in the last chorus on top of all the other elements really hit. I never understood the “radio edit”. They could/should have released it with the album’s production and just shortened the bridge.

The PBP album version is the only version that exists to me. Her Idol performance is special in its own right but it should have never replaced the album version when they released it to radio. The production is top notch and the transition from the bridge to the last chorus gets lost in the ballad version. I remember the chills (and tears) I got listening the first time. Someone is one of my favorites, you nailed everything that makes it so great. The lyrics are so poetic and her vocals and production sweep you away into the story of the song. I just love it, and it leads nicely into Take You High, which is also a highlight. I have mixed feelings on the PBP album. I think it starts out so strong but it loses steam halfway through and the rest of the songs, while perfectly listenable, just feel like filler and never stuck with me. It starts to fall apart at Let Your Tears Fall, and it wasn't until the tour version came out that I saw the brilliance in Tightrope. I wish I liked the last half of the album more because I know a lot of fans love GGTB, In the Blue, Second Wind, etc. but they just don't do much for me. I loathe Run Run Run. If there's a Kelly song I never want to listen to again, it's that one. I don't even know what it is about it that I don't like, it just bothers me.

Glad to see the RRR hate on here - that song goes literally nowhere and is particularly frustrating to think about because Meghan freaking Trainor managed to put out a superior duet with John Legend at the same time. Absolutely not.

I can’t abide the Run Run Run slander. It’s the second best song on PBP. I also am absolutely here for Second Wind, In The Blue, Good Goes The Bye, War Paint, Someone. Invincible was a blight I care not to ever revisit. Dance With Me is the sleeper hit that never was of the album.

TYH is one of my all-time favorite Kelly songs, but I also LOVE LOVE LOVE the following: Good Goes The Bye (This, Someone, In The Blue, and Dance With Me make me very emotional) Someone In The Blue Piece By Piece Dance With Me Heartbeat Song Run Run Run (there is some sloppiness in the production when the finale hits, but this song is majestic and beautiful.) Invincible (production is also overblown but that finale...whew!) Tightrope
Remove I Had A Nightmare and PXP is one of my favorite Kelly albums. TIL that Julia Michaels and Justin Tranter wrote on the album, albeit on different songs (my 2 least favorite after IHAD.)

Oddly enough, PbP might be...my favorite album from her? That seems like blasphemy to type out loud but I really like the lyrics of the songs, the album production, the cohesive sound throughout the album (the back half of the album from Let Your Tears Fall through the bonus tracks, is a career highlight), and overall I think there are the fewest duds on this album. The bad rep this album gets really comes from the singles.
Heartbeat Song is cute, but had no business being a single at all, let alone the lead single. I could have gotten behind it being some sort of buzz single since I know her daughter really liked it but as the lead single? Absolutely not.
Invincible is meh at best, she really pushed it as Stronger's older sister at the time. But I'm not a fan of the lyrics, it really seemed like she was trying too hard to recreate Stronger with this song at a time when the uplifting anthems were dated. I could have supported this as like a bonus track or maybe even on the Stronger album, but as the second single to this album absolutely not.
The only single they really got right was Piece by Piece, but a) they released it way too late, b) that awful radio remix (not the Idol version) was a terrible decision to release, and c) when the song took off after Idol they sat on it too long before really pushing it. I feel like that song could have been even bigger if they had pushed the album version to radio, and then the Idol version as like a one off, and of course had better timing.
In my "reimagined discography", Kelly released the Piece by Piece album with the following tracklist:
1) Catch My Breath – also released as the lead single. Obviously this means this never would’ve went on the Greatest Hits album, but I feel like this sound was very much in at this time and would have been a great opener to the album and the era as a whole. Obviously we won’t ever know if this actually would have done better than HBS, but I think it would have done at least as well as it did IRL. 2) Let Your Tears Fall –second single. 3) Take You High – third single. 4) Someone 5) Piece by Piece – fourth single. 6) War Paint 7) Dance with Me – potential fifth single. I think this could have done really well. 8) Nostalgic 9) Tightrope 10) In the Blue 11) Good Goes the Bye 12) Second Wind 13) Heartbeat Song – Bonus track?
