Amazing. Effortless. How does her voice just keep getting BETTER?
Seriously, are there any other big-voiced artists who have sound better 20 years into their career than when they started? I feel like almost all have seen a steady decline in their voice as they’ve aged. Maybe Beyoncé, Carrie Underwood, and Celine Dion? Although I think they’ve more maintained their voices than seen a marked improvement over time.
Kelly was on an episode of The Global Chart Show on Apple Music to talk about the Kellyoke EP and fortunately, the interviewer got a lot of album talk out of her. My summary going off of memory:
- Figuring out how to “navigate” releasing such personal music…she mentioned the kids but didn’t stress it as much as she usually does when talking about this subject *crosses fingers* - The album is coming but has to “get my crap together” (laughs) - Emphasizes that when you’re completely honest with your writing combined with your emotions (happy, sad, angry) makes up the equation for the best songs (cited Billie’s Happier than Ever as evidence) - Majority of songs written were written while on a flight…debated calling the album something related to that/being at 30,000 feet - Still saying that she wrote nearly every song
Most of the album talk starts in the last five minutes or so. One small caveat I'd note is that she says she wrote most of it while on a plane, rather than one specific flight. I wonder if those weren't flights to drop the kids off with her ex - if so, I can imagine how that would stir up quite a lot of emotions on the return trips alone. But, that's just baseless speculation; whatever the case, this album sounds so damn promising, I couldn't possibly be more eager for it. If Kellyoke is any indication of what kind of sound she's going for too, count me in there as well.
Speaking of the EP, it really has been the most pleasant surprise after what appeared to be a lackluster tracklist. "Happier Than Ever" is simply sublime. "Queen Of The Night" feels in part like "Whole Lotta Woman" mashed up with her "Free Your Mind" performance with En Vogue. And "Fake Plastic Trees"... I think this may be a new high mark in her recorded material. It's early, but I feel like it belongs in the conversation with "Sober" and "Tightrope (Tour Version)" as her greatest vocal performances on record. She's covered this sound for years now live, but never on record like this, which makes it feel unique and special in her already rich discography. It's simply masterful.
Looks like yesterday's "Leave the Door Open" was the closer for the season (when I checked last week it said "Footloose" was a new episode, but I didn't realize she performed it a few weeks back). Gonna be a loooooooong summer. Hopefully they'll upload some unaired covers throughout the break, but assuming that's a long shot.
What's up with them re-posting old covers as new? She did "Leave the Door Open" back in December 2021.
I can't say for sure but in all her interviews and what not right before her summer vacay her talking voice sounded dead-tired; they may have just skipped some Kellyokes to save her voice toward the end of the season knowing they had some unaired/old ones they could repurpose.
Laid out what was under the surface And lived like it wouldn't hurt us But it hurt us

The fact that she has more Emmy’s than Grammy’s is wild. But she totally deserves them. I can’t wait to see how the show going into season 4 and taking over Ellen’s time slot. I do hope she is just taking a season break from The Voice as she is my favorite coach. I feel like her next album is definitely going to be well worth the wait. Also did I read they are submitting her WCCA special for Primetime Emmy Consideration?? That would be incredible if she added one of those to her stash!! Honestly, the Emmy’s are airing on NBC this year and they should convince her to host.
I don't know if we have an answer for that at the moment. Her agents are at CAA and publicists are at Viewpoint. iMDB Pro does not show anything regarding management. CAA may just be handling everything for now.
I stay obsessed with this EP. The vocals are just unreal. “Fake Plastic Trees” is fast becoming one of my all-time favorite studio vocal performances of hers ever. I don’t find myself listening to “Blue Bayou” half as much as the other five. But among those five? No notes.
This KC content lull we are currently suffering through only makes me appreciate how freaking fortunate I feel as a fan to know that we have so much content coming our way in the fall....daily Kellyokes / interviews, the Holiday season, eventual new album, yada yada yada....In other words, I miss the content flow and can't wait for it to come back LOL.
