Surprised to see so many lukewarm to reactions to this. I was not underwhelmed in the least, this melody is incredible! I love the instrumentation too. A+ song. Same, I love it so much more than the wildcard ones… minus Bluebird obvs.

This is nice and I like it but it’s a little too safe, if I’m being honest. It sounds like a continuation of “Settling Down” sonically and she definitely wants to continue that radio momentum with this.
That said, I like it and as an album track would really enjoy it. Just as a lead it sounds kinda safe and same old same old from her. But that’s better than most.

she just said her next album era is going “western” so it’s probably the radio-friendliest one to kick the album off.

Awesome! I know it’s only been 12 weeks but this era has been quiet so hopefully this will build more interest.

She’s been on TV twice too for CMA and New Years Eve and didn’t do it on either so it’s hard to tell what the deal is with the timeline for the album. I def don’t see it coming out before the Bandwagon tour is over and that’s already into summer.

^ Yeah, I continue to get the feeling that perhaps this is just a one-off single. When Wildcard was announced, it was announced at the same time as “Wash” and “Locomotive,” and I believe she did the same thing for “Vice” and that song’s parent album. “Cowboy” didn’t get that.
If indeed this isn’t on the album, I’m willing to bet that it’s gonna start being rolled out at the same time as the last two albums have been—middle to end of summer for the lead, with the album out in Q4.

Eh, I don't think there's that good of a chance this doesn't wind up on an album. This was released later in the year than the last two lead singles and just because she started the album rollout earlier in the past, I don't believe there's any reason to believe that means "Cowboy" is some one-off, especially considering that it is doing very well for her thus far. I also feel like there's a decent chance "Y'all Means All" might wind up on her next record as well (I sure am hoping so, too). There's a distinct sonic similarity with both songs, and I know months ago someone had mentioned that she's going with a more western/rootsy/Texan feel to her next project and both songs fit that imagery perfectly. We may not get an album until later in 2022, but I'm guessing she drops something in Q2, like maybe around April. That's my guess.

While I agree this song is more likely to appear in the next album (along wtih some full production songs from The Marfa Tapes), I don't think Y'all Means All would be in the next album, because it has a specific purpose (Queer Eyes theme song). I don't think many artists include these types of songs in their studio albums.

I just want to say this song keeps growing on me. I love some of the more peaceful and soothing sounds that she's done lately (coincidentally her three most recent singles - this one, "Settling Down", and "Bluebird" all fall into this vein for me), it's a really nice escape to have in this suffocating, pandemic world.

I don't think many artists include these types of songs in their studio albums. I'm not expecting it to be on there really, but I do wish that it would be at least a bonus track or something. It's a fantastic song and it is sonically comparable to "If I Was a Cowboy," so I imagine it would fit on there just fine.

I love this. She's been doing really good lately--another great one here after Settling Down and especially Bluebird. + Drunk (and I Don't Wanna Go Home).

From Billboard. She said she’s turned it in to the label.
“We are finished and now we’re just tying the bows on all that stuff. I really got to hone in on this project because we wrote most of it in 2020,” she says, noting that the bulk of the album was written at her Tennessee farm. “There are very few writers on this project. ‘Cowboy’ is the first peek of that. I think that was the last one I wrote for this project and the first one we released. [The album] has a vibe and it’s different than anything I’ve ever done, but it’s obviously still me. When I sing, it’s straight-up country, no matter which way I twist it. But yeah, it’s got a bit of a thing to it, that’s all I’ll say.”

I think this has sort of grown on me after some time with it? She has an ear for hypnotic melodies that worm their way in and stick with you. It was immediate for me, but the little melodic "wahoo-hoo-ooh" thing in the song has been stuck in my head for months, lol.

Maybe I am being delusional but I hope this songs struggles on radio lately (losing 82 spins and 420k in audience this week on Mediabase) or more due to country radio converting "Drunk" so much and not this song testing poorly because this song has hit a bit of a brick wall lately it feels like.

If this song does not reclaim its bullet by next Sunday for Mediabase, it will go recurrent Sunday evening on the 27th. Tonight makes it the 2nd weekend without a bullet.

She said she’s playing two songs from her new album she’s never played before at C2C. If one of them is Cowboy then she’s probably not going to ACMs because she’s heading over early. I’m assuming we would get the new song before she plays it on the 11th…

This song moves up a spot to #19 on Mediabase with a solid bullet of 165 which is a relief after the last couple of weeks. I also decided to see how this song was doing in relation to her last two singles ("Settling Down" and "Bluebird") as I am like 99% sure "If I Was A Cowboy" will be at #20 on Billboard 20 weeks in tomorrow night. Interestingly enough this is doing right in between how her last 2 songs were doing as 20 weeks in "Settling Down" was at #25, and "Bluebird" was at #16. So at the very least the pace for this song does indicate a Top 5 to possible #1 finish for this assuming the callout scores are good.

I think it would be moving a little faster without Drunk. Looks like album news next week.

Per her Instagram post she has new information to share on March 10th. Likely an album announcement.
