Sorry if this topic has already been done, I couldn't find another thread about it. But The Chainsmokers came up in the other thread about each decade's Nickelback, wtf happened to those guys? To be fair they've had a few songs scrape the top 10 on CHR, but do abysmally on the Hot 100. But I kept thinking they would come back big; now it's been 4 years, I guess it's probably not going to happen. It seems tough to ruin a streak of five Top 3 hits, how did these guys manage to do it? Sidenote: do we all agree "Closer" is one of the greatest mega-hits in modern history, and "Something Like This" is absolutely one of the worst?

Sometimes things don't go wrong, acts just have a short life in the mainstream.

They chased white mediocrity and that only has a 1:5 survival rate.

Considering the absolutely limited charisma they have, they didn't go wrong at all. Having that many hits is a miracle itself.

They were just another DJ act in a long line of DJ acts that come and go once music trends change. They pretty much live and die by their collaborators and guest vocalists and are entirely disposable once the hits stop coming.

They didn’t change or evolve their sound even a little bit. Yes they did end up doing more than that “Selfie” song. DLMD and “Roses” were the better hits they released. “Closer” is an abortion of massive proportions that inexplicably was so successful with non-existent artistry or anything.
It is safe to say that they probably won’t have any more mainstream hits anytime soon but based on the success they did have they’re probably set for life.

Yeah I tend to agree but what about those two top 10s they've had in the last couple years?

The tides of mainstream music in the US just turned against them, and for that matter most of the major EDM producers of the 2010s. It was especially apparent when the Chainsmokers tried to call attention to their own shallow music and dissatisfaction with fame on their 2018 album Sick Boy, which along with a messy singles rollout all but grinded their hitmaking status to a halt.
I still like all 5 of their big hits from 2016-17, but there's no denying that they made too many bad decisions that cost them their longevity in the public eye. Maybe they'll bounce back after an extended hiatus when that next album eventually comes out, but I think they'll remain more EDM-famous than pop-famous from now on.

EDM as a whole died out and that's all they did. Closer's success was such a fluke tbh
