Lil Nas X's album has been out a month, lol. I don't think we can answer this question right now.
Lil Nas X has definitely had the flashier more headline grabbing year though. But Doja has displayed stronger consistency so far (her album that came out four months ago is selling as much as his album that dropped a month ago). He's had two #1's, but she's also had half of her album go viral/get big streams and she currently has three songs in the top ten at top 40. And out of their lead singles that dropped at the same time, his peaked slightly higher, but hers is still sitting in the top 10. I lean towards Doja at the moment, but Lil Nas X is still so early in his album campaign and Doja still has life left in hers. We don't know how they will ultimately play out.
And also, it feels like Doja has pulled all of this off without half the effort that Nas X has put in. Which makes her success this era feel more low-key, but that doesn't make it less impressive.

I tip my hat to Mr. Lil Nas X to be able to be the cultural force that he is with some really terrible music.

Kinda still too early to tell, but Lil Nas X already had 3 top 10 hits off this era including 2 #1s. Doja has had several songs waiting to take off and then for what ever reason the label is too slow to react in time, resulting in many of her songs missing the top 10.

Doja's album will be the bigger deal in the long run, and I don't think she's gonna risk overexposure because Lil Nas does a lot of antics that might get old soon. But right now, Lil Nas's bigger single success gives him the edge.

stream "SCOOP"
Doja Cat has owned the year in my opinion, successfully solidifying her as an artist in the mainstream. "Kiss Me More" is a bigger hit than any of Lil Nas X's number-ones so far, so I wouldn't just compare the peaks to decide who's having the bigger era. They're just at different points in their careers—Doja released her debut album a full year before "old Town Road" went #1.
Sucks that both of their albums got stuck at No. 2, though. Doja outdid Lil Nas X there as well, staying at No. 2 for four weeks to Lil Nas X's one.
Lil Nas X, on the other hand, made more headlines, earned two more number-one hits, and had greater impact overall in our culture. He also had a bigger album bomb on the Hot 100 iirc, though Doja did get unlucky with the Tyler, the Creator album dropping on the same day.

Yeah, it's safe to say Planet Her at this point. On hit single number four, album still sitting in the top 10, six songs on the year end chart and the virality of some of the album tracks. And it doesn't look like she's finished yet, meanwhile Lil Nas X is moving on to the next album.

Montero has kinda underperformed relative to the success of its singles as the months have gone on while Doja has hung on strong.

I personally feel they're a lot closer in terms of cultural relevancy and impact than the raw numbers show, but no matter how you slice it, it's Planet Her.

Montreo had the bigger hits, but Planet Her had the bigger overall album as several of the album cuts, singles or non singles, have stuck around.

Maybe if we're only looking at Hot 100 peaks. "Kiss Me More" was bigger than "Montero (CMBYN)." I don't feel like digging into chart points, but I'm pretty sure her other singles have been at the very least comparable and possibly bigger.

I could be wrong tho. Both that and “Industry Baby” spent near 20 weeks in the top 10. So I’d argue he had 2 bigger hits than Doja.

based on Billboard's chart points:
#1 Kiss Me More #2 Industry Baby #3 Montero #4 Need To Know #5 You Right #6 That's What I Want #7 Woman #8 Ain't Sh*t #9 Get Into It (Yuh)
Based on Spotify streams:
#1 Montero #2 Industry Baby #3 Kiss Me More #4 Woman #5 Need To Know #6 That's What I Want #7 You Right #8 Get Into It (Yuh) #9 Ain't Sh*t
Spotify Streams:
Planet Her 4B streams Montero 3,43B streams
Weeks in the top 10 on Billboard 200:
Planet Her 33 weeks Montero 8 weeks
WW sales (United World Chart):
Planet Her 2,846,000 Montero 1,464,000
Planet Her is clearly a bigger album (both in the US and WW). As for the singles, I'd say Planet Her wins too.
Huge hits: Montero, Kiss Me More, Industry Baby Big hits: Need To Know, You Right, That's What I Want, Woman Minor hits: Ain't Sh*t, Get Into It (Yuh)

Planet Her is turning into a Future Nostalgia-type era with all the hits it’s having, and they’ve all done really well and it’s still going too, while Montero had three, all of which did well too, but his era is presumably wrapping up. I feel like albums and singles themselves, I’d give it to Doja, but I’d say Lil Nas X has slightly better name recognition?

I do think if you go to Middle America and ask an evangelical churchgoer about them, it's more likely they'll have heard of Lil Nas X, though. 💀 which is only partly reflected in the Google Search results number above, and there's no other way to measure that besides actually polling people I'm afraid.

I love both albums. Both Planet Her and Montero are in my top 3 albums of 2021 (along with Sour). I’d say Montero had the bigger peak when it came to singles but Planet Her is the overall bigger album with incredible longevity for 2022. Doja’s fifth single on an album that’s been out for over a year is smashing while Lil Nas X seemed to move on after his third single. Both albums are culturally significant, both albums had all hit singles, but Planet Her’s longevity makes it the bigger era.
