Casey Kasem's American Top 40 expanded from 3 to 4 hours and was at the height of its popularity. The TV show WKRP in Cincinnati debuted, and so did the radio series The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. In terms of the music, we're moving away from the era that the precursors to alternative rock were the lasting legacy of, and reaching the years that supplied the bulk of the 'classic rock/oldies radio' catalog. 34 of these songs were either on the 1978 or 1979 Year-End Hot 100 lists. You'll start to see the original forms of bands that you're used to hearing sound really different in these rankdowns--whether because of lineup changes or stylistic evolutions--like Boston, Heart, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and The Who. You'll encounter hugely remembered eras from Bob Seger, Bruce Springsteen, Electric Light Orchestra, Eric Clapton, Foreigner, Kansas, Steely Dan, Styx, The Cars, Fleetwood Mac, Wings...and finally, after a long road paved with duds, The Rolling Stones in their prime. At first glance I know way more of the 1978 songs than 1979 songs and what is listed is pretty awesome.

So, the 3 years comment, does that mean this rankdown will go back to 1976? If so, does that mean we are going to see Aerosmith's Dream On or (hopefully) Sweet Emotion? I'm thinking we are going to miss out on ranking my favorite Aerosmith song of all time (SO)

I'm glancing over the list right now. I'm already impressed by the difference between this year and 1979's. In terms of music quality, proto-alternative material had to do a lot of heavy lifting last time around, but it looks like the classic rock artists will be more than able to hold their own this time. It definitely seems in retrospect like 1979-1980 was a transitional era for the AOR format. Another huge difference that stands out to me is the relative lack of one hit wonders; they were all over last year's list. Personally, I'm surprised to learn that Gerry Rafferty had three hit songs. I've never heard anything but "Baker Street" get played in my area.

Yes, 1976 will be the final year. No comment on what songs will be in '77 and '76; those lists aren't finalized yet

You can rank it in that manner if it feels right to you. I won't be as stringent about the "Eruption/You Really Got Me" case as I am about the "We Will Rock You/We Are The Champions" case, though, for two reasons
1. R&R Magazine didn't display them the same way.

2. "Eruption" was never on any version of the "You Really Got Me" commercial single, whereas "We Will Rock You" was the primary B-side for the "We Are The Champions" commercial single.

Looks looks good. I know and 40 of those songs, and I don't think any first time listens will take their place, but it is always great to discover new rock.. BTW unless we to rank those other two huge radio hits in 1978 Van Halen got robbed. also again no Kiss. Strutter '78 was released that year. My favorite Kiss song and I don't get to rank it. also The four solo albums were released in '78 and not one single makes the list? I hope at least we get some extras from those albums? "77 and 76' better get with the program. 


I believe we should rank  "We Will Rock You/We Are the Champions". That's the way Rock format has played them for years. They are both equally awesome anyway.

If Jimmy Buffet's "Fins" could only make it to #89 in 1979, I'm wondering what the delicacy that is "Cheeseburger in Paradise" will muster?


Also, highly encourage you to check out this high grade Yes video for Don't Kill the Whale.   They definitely increased their video budget/capabilities by the 90125 album in 1983 with Owner of a Lonely Heart and Leave It.

Alright so, if you don't remember how I posted the extras the last year I hosted, here's the 1980 explanation again:

...peacebone I have gathered the Spotify (or YouTube if there's no Spotify link) and YouTube numbers for every song outside the top 100. I'm not posting songs in categories this year like I have for past rankdowns. I'll just post them in ascending order of year-end position. But here's where the curation comes in.
1. The 40 most popular extras will be posted during reveals.
2. The pre-reveal extras will consist of the rest of the 100 most popular extras, the rest of the top 101-200 of the year-end, the rest of the crossovers from the 1980 Alt top 100, and anything else that peaked in the top 10 of the weekly chart.
3. ...extras <that> don't fit any of these criteria... won't get the full extra treatment (video links + chart data + trivia). I will be posting them (in fact they'll be in the next post)--they'll just be in dry list form like the Mediabase extras of the past.

This still worked out fine for this year's extras and got us down to a very similar number: 166 full-size extras (126 pre-reveal and 40 during reveals).
However...well, if you thought there were a large amount of extras before, you haven't seen anything yet. This year, we're dealing with 481 extras. Which means 315 songs didn't make the cut. So I can't put them all in the same post like I did last time. Instead they'll be split up into 3.
Also, you're far more likely to see songs you actually recognize in this list this time. There are even 2 songs which made the Hot 100 Year-End (I'll point them out)!

Both "Ouch!" and "I Must Be In Love" are takeoffs of The Beatles' 1965 material--"Ouch!" in particular is a direct rework of "Help!"

Okay, I don't know if I'll get through this whole list but the first one is quite the winner: 1994 - Once Again.  Really has a Heart quality to it, in a great kinda way.

There are some treasures.  Some trash.  Fun seeing what you find, particularly when you have no expectations.

I'm skimming over the extras right now. A few observations: While most people know Ambrosia for their run of pop-rock hits, they were actually a progressive rock group originally. You can hear some of that prog sound lingering in "Life Beyond L.A." "Southern Girls" is classic Cheap Trick and would have been an easy top half pick for me. I know Dan Hill exclusively for his soft rock ballad "Sometimes When We Touch." That's a big batch of great Elvis Costello songs in these preliminary extras. I would love to have ranked some of those in a theoretical '78 modern rock game. "Tiger in a Spotlight" isn't one of ELP's greatest, but it's a fun goofball track. "Snowbound" is an overlooked Genesis song with some great atmosphere and a grisly subject matter - a definite highlight on the rather iffy "And Then There Were Three" album. It's interesting to see Gentle Giant here, even if it is with two songs from their late career AOR bandwagon phase. While they're favorites among prog fans, they never made much of a commercial impact, so I doubt they'll be making a proper appearance in these games. Pretty similar story with Renaissance as well. I'll join Tears Are Not Enough in hyping Nick Lowe. Rod Stewart's "You're Insane" is yet another song that appeared in MTV's first 24 hours. And lastly, that live version of "White Punks on Dope" by The Tubes is great.

Alright...finally completed my own list so I can post more extras guilt-free.
-"Don't Cry Out Loud" was a #10 Hot 100 hit for Ms. Manchester that finished #26 on the 1979 year-end.
-Devo released this Rolling Stones cover as their second-ever single
-Reggae group Third World are best known worldwide for their cover of The O'jays' "Now That We've Found Love", but their tribute to Morant Bay Rebellion leader Paul Bogle is their most popular song in their home country.
-"I Can Get Off On You" was the second of two Country #1s from the album Waylon & Willie
-"This Time I'm In It for Love" was another Hot 100 #10 that finished #58 on the 1978 Year-End.
