This album is a 6.5/10 for me. I was misguided by "Unholy" and "Gimme" (which works better in the context of this album) and went in thinking it would be a dance-oriented album. "Lose You" is the most instant track for me, except for that autotune part. "Six Shots" caught me by surprise. I hope Sam would abandon these boring AC-leaning ballads and stick to the lane of R&B/Dance diva.

I was also expecting an upbeat album, but it’s still a nice listen. Better than Love Goes, for me. I’d love a full out upbeat album from Sam in the future.
Edit: I hadn’t heard “Heavenly Sent” originally. But damn, it’s pretty. That is the types of ballad I love from Sam. I would have enjoyed it on the standard edition, but I can see why they may have excluded it as it’s more of something they’ve done before.

Their styling in the CD booklet is very interesting - oversized blazers with tshirts and suits. They're even in a wifebeater in jeans. I was expecting a lot more of a flamboyant style like they have been rocking in the promo appearances, There is a pretty funny picture with a lopsided weave hanging off their head that honestly should have been the cover shot. I've spent more time with the album and I still really enjoy it, but if ballads are gonna be included, they need to be as chill-inducing as Say It First, Palace and Midnight Train, or not at all. That is the only place this album fails.

I love the new album. I can see GLORIA being an album of the year upset winner at the next Grammys. GLORIA is their best ever. I think the album will sell consistently because it's that good and word of mouth will spread. It's really for the LGBT community which I love.
This is the Sam I love. I've been wanting a queer popstar who is fearless and Sam checks all the boxes. I love Sam this era the most.

I’ve never been big into Sam’s music but I gave Gloria a listen and I gotta say it’s Sam’s best album to date.
My favorites are Lose You, I’m Not Here To Make Friends, Gimme, Unholy, and Perfect. Sam’s voice works perfect with dance music/house production. I just wish they would cut out the ballads and replace them with more upbeat songs. That’s the one thing holding this album back for me. The only skip on the album is the song Gloria, which is way too church-y for me.
Also, I love how Sam is in their sexual liberation era. Werk!

Oh god, first the „perfect magazine” cover now this. Honestly it just looks like someone is looking for attention. It’s just ridiculous and unnecessary. I miss Sam who had good songs with soul in them, pre-Promises Sam, now it’s mostly just boring radio music and attention-seeking behaviour. Most Gloria songs could be sung by any pop singer. It’s sad when singers lose their uniqueness and become mainstream boring more-of-the-same artists. |
