usually this type of song bows out in the 30s in Madness rankdowns, I have no idea why this was the one case to break through all the way to top 4

yeah knew this was going out soon but I was rooting for this just because as good as the rest of the songs left are it's not as interesting seeing critically acclaimed indie pop artists make the top three for rankdown madnesses for the 12094378789432897th time

It's down to the final 2; Please and The Only Heartbreaker.
1848 points vs. 1961 points.
The 12th lowest SD vs. the 2nd lowest.
Five #1s vs. one #1.
But which will win seed #3? Find out in 10 minutes.

"The Only Heartbreaker" came at a perfect time because I was finally able to start getting into Mitski ("Nobody" is a BOP that I had not properly appreciated). Looking forward to her new album and congrats Miss Hoemed for taking this seed!

I mean, I didn't want to just rank Jessie #1 predictably, but no one gave me a better song than "Please" to put above her

Please is definitely one of my favorite songs from Jessie tbf, but I'm glad it didn't win because that would be so predictable lmao. Cool to see Mitski win : )

Another big catchup post
53: Like2Like - This Jax singer just really isn't that good
52: Happy Place - In some way, I find Saint PHNX's genuine dedication to sounding like they're stuck in 2012 admirable, but I never want to listen to their stuff. Millennial whoop indie folk died for a reason.
51: Mediator - I actually did kinda like this one. The singer has a strong voice, the chorus is good, the playing is solid. A little too discordant and heavy for my tastes, but still a solid piece of modern metal here. Would've liked to have seen it do better, but didn't expect it to.
50: Better with You - I did actually kinda enjoy this one the first time I heard it, it's definitely in the vein of smooth emo-y pop that I can enjoy. But whenever I came back to it just got more annoying. The start-stop vocals in the prechorus and the "yoooouuu" in the chorus are uh grating. Still think it deserved a better placing than 50 though.
49: Happily Unhappy - This was decent, surprised it finished so low. Only detriment to this song is that it just did not need to be 6 minutes long. I think if it was even a minute or 2 shorter I coulda placed it higher, its just too one-note and same-y to make good use of that long a runtime. Still a nice little song though.
48: Cut You Off - Eh, Little Mix never really impress me but they also don't usually make *bad* music. Just stuff I don't care about. This was no different.
47: Pieces of You - I do generally like Nothing,Nowhere, I've even submitted a song by him in a Madness tournament before. But his recent stuff has been ehhhhh. I don't think the tune on this one is too bad, but his vocals are so squeaky and it sounds too much like generic pop punk-revival to be as interesting as a lot of his other stuff.
46: 4 Da Gang - I hope people keep submitting fun rap tracks with clever samples in them in these Madnesses, tracks like Beethoven and Who I Smoke are some of the most memorable in the past year. I also really dig 42 Dugg's rap style from the couple songs I've heard from. Didn't expect this to go far, but it is a lot of fun.
45: One Right Now - I am an active fan of both Post Malone and The Weeknd, but this song is just *not* good at all. I guess when these two try to meet in the middle stylistically you can only end up with bland, watery 80s pop revival. The annoying hook doesn't help either.
44: Nothing Else Matters - I've heard so many Nothing Else Matters at this point that they don't even mean anything anymore. Uhh this was fine I guess, pretty, is for sure a cover of Nothing Else Matters with pretty instrumentation, it's fine. Cage the Elephant's version was better.
43: I Need Your Love - Okayyy this isn't worse than One Right Now, I may have underranked a bit. That said, this song is kinda just...entirely absent of qualities I like. I don't think it's *bad* necessarily, it's just kind of a slog to listen to and is the kind of overly faithful genre revival that lacks any identity of its own.
42: Remember Her Name - Pretty generic adult contemporary radio fodder, but Mickey Guyton has such a pretty, pure voice that I really love here. The little hints of steel guitar are nice too. I don't know if I can justify liking this as much as I do, it's just very pleasant to listen to.
41: Knees - All the respect to Injury Reserve for putting together a song as experimental and emotional as Knees. Clearly it's a critical darling, and I think it's well made, I do not like listening to this song at all, and I do feel bad about that. I've really given it a fair shake, and it just does not click with me at all. It's just so one-dimensional and repetitive, the positive qualities of the song just end up tired by the end.
40: Scripture - This is another one I kept coming back to to see if I could unlock its secrets, cause it definitely seems like something I'd like. Very new age-y and artsy and I like the sound of the synths, but it just never made the connection. Can't exactly put my finger on why.
39: Not Too Deep - This round had a lot of contemporary R&B that left absolutely no impression on me. This isn't entirely forgettable though, the little kiss 6lack makes in his verse sounds like the gross fake kissing noise I do as a joke and makes me giggle. That's all I remember.
38: Time Storm - Huh definitely didn't expect to see the Blow Monkeys in a 2021 rankdown. And uhh it does sound like a 40 year old sophisti-pop act making music in 2021. Respectable and enjoyable enough, but a little lacking in flavor. Generally good performances across the board though.
37: Terrible Thing - Pretty, stripped back track from the Killers here. Really great songwriting here, I appreciate that more than the song itself which I think teeters on boringness. The quiet, minimal performance is well-deserved. I've been listening to the big hit albums of 2021 at work recently, Pressure Machine is on my to-do list.
36: Midnight - As much as I loved Creeper when they broke through a few years back, they're far from the most consistent band in the world. But about once a year they crank out a truly great song, and when they do I fall in love. I don't think Midnight is as good as Black Rain or Black Mass or Born Cold, but still exactly what I want in a Creeper song.
35: Palm Reader Remix - The original Palm Reader is decent, but this remix is way more fun than it has any right to be. Like, I am actually impressed by how energetic and exciting a Dreamers song can sound, Upsahl's verse slaps so hard here. This...may be my favorite Dreamers song now. Low bar, but.
34: Feel That Way - Uhh sorry, I do not remember this one at all. Good bass groove for sure, sounds like something I'd here on my discover weekly and make note to come back to later, but not really like as much the second time around. It's a decent track, but this is a good list of songs and it just didn't compare.
33: Better Without You - I really didn't like Evanescence's big comeback single in 2020 (idr the name), so I was kinda surprised to hear that they actually do still have it here. As much shit as Bring Me to Life (and by extension the band's other work) gets, Amy Lee is a great vocalist with a good ear for pop hooks. Not reinventing the wheel here, but it is a solid track for Evanescence.
32: Driving to Texas - God I am so tired of hearing Tom Morello on Sirius radio. Put it on the 80s new wave station "hi I'm Tom Morello, here's my new song Barns Courtney kinda sounds 80s right", put it on the 90s station "hi I'm Tom Morello, here's my new song, I was in Rage Against the Machine". Give me a break Tom stop. This was okay, kinda boring, guitar did add some needed oomph towards the end.
31: Hunter's Moon - Kinda hurts to put a Ghost song so low on a rankdown like this, but I am just not a big fan of this new song at all. I guess the guitar riff in the chorus is kinda cool, but every time I hear this it just feels like I'm waiting for the song to start the entire time until it's over.
30: Angel - Uhh also kinda completely forgot about this one. And I did every time I returned to this playlist. But then I'd listen to the song again and be like, hey this is pretty good, I'll rank it high. And listening to it now, yeah this chorus does slap and the bass groove is tight, but I can also see why it's not something that's going to stick with me a month down the road.
29: Bobby - Was surprised to see this a Wolf Alice track when I first listened to it. Legit thought it was The Decemberists at first lol. I like it though, never thought I'd see the band dabbling in alt-country, but they do it well. The fiddle is a nice addition, good vocal chemistry.
28: That Life - Never cared much for this group, and this isn't much of an exception. Not the worst I've heard from them, but it still has a lot of the same musical traits that I so often find annoying from them. Credit where credit is due though, this chorus has firmly lodged itself in my head, and clearly me remembering songs is a problem.
27: You Could Be - Uhhhh sorry, I have nothing to say about this one at all. Like, it's fine. It is a song I listened to.
26: Under Din Sne - I also don't have too much to say about this one, but it does sound cool as shit. Builds very nicely throughout, I like the tone on the guitars and general dramatics of the track. Right up my alley.
25: Secrets - I literally did not realize this was the act fka Slaves until like, my second or third listen lol. I like a lot of the stuff from their new album, but this track never stuck with me as a single in the same way that Heavier or Prayers did. I like the math-y guitars, but they've definitely had way better hooks than this.
24: Foreign Things - The beat on this track is legit great, I love that piano-bass groove. Chorus is decent too, just think it overstays its welcome a bit and the verses are kinda flat. May have underranked a little.
23: I'm Sorry - Josef Salvat is just a really consistent artist. This is one of the punchiest and poppiest tracks I've heard from him, and it works. Good pop song here.
22: Lawmaker - I've seen this Darkside album around over the past year, but this is my first experience with it. I'll have to give it a full listen cause this track is dope. Very trip hop-y, cool spacey groove.
21: I Don't Wanna Leave - Rufus Du Sol can always deliver on a solid vibe. They do it here as well as they normally do, but I seldom find their stuff anything more than just a decent vibe, and this one is a little overly dour on top of it.
20: Warp - Tricot are just always so good. Like, hell, I don't know why I don't follow them more than I do cause every time I hear a new song from them I go absolutely hog wild.
19: Summer of Love - I just finished Eureka Seven, new #1 anime for me. Summer of Love was an event in that! And I think I was ranking this list about the same time I was wrapping up the show, and I was like, yeah, that's fun, I appreciate that. I like Aluna as a vocalist too, and the song is catchy as hell. I just wanted a chance to shill for Eureka Seven.
18: Breaks My Back - Well, not to show my hand too much here but the All the Damn Vampires remix of this song was my #7 pick for this tournament. I still think that the remix is actually an improvement on the original, adds more darkness and depth, but that remix wouldn't have landed on my list to begin with if the original song didn't have something to it. Meg is a talent.
17: Insomnia - I've seen Parannoul on RYM a lot, and when I see things like j-rock, shoegaze, post-rock, and post-hardcore together, it does get me giddy. Their 2 2021 albums are top of my to-listen list. This song was actually my first experience with them though, and as you can probably tell by my #1 ranking it left an impression on me. This is great stuff.
16: 2010 - I don't know if my brain is big enough to fully appreciate the art of Earl Sweatshirt, but the psychedelic production on this track is really cool and the track does flow well. I enjoyed listening to it.
15: Little Deer - Spellling is good. I like Spellling. She makes good music. The Turning Wheel is good. That's all.
14: Pressure - Huh, surprised to see this place as highly as it did. Honestly, I did think this track was extremely annoying, namely the samples. Otherwise a kinda forgettable R&B song. Does nothing for me.
13: Lost in Paradise - As mentioned previously, Jujutsu Kaisen music does go hard. All 3 songs I've heard from it are legitimately great (sorry, don't know the second ED). Lost in Paradise was like *good* in the minute and a half TV version, but this full version warmed me up to it so much more. Always cool to see some anime music representation in a rankdown.
12: No Hard Feelings - I would say that Blue Weekend is an album I need to check out, but I think I've already been exposed to the full thing from the 2021 rankdown series. I like this track, a bit brief but I like the bass performance and its a nice little piece of dream pop that gets in and gets out.
11: Blurry Eyes - I remember some Honest Men songs in various madnesses in the past and never really liking them, but this one is good. Sounds like a Night Traveler or a LANY or The Midnight or Chain Gang of 1974 or whatever. So, I like it, what do you call this genre of hazy -wave revival acts.
10: Bloody Waters - I almost never think about or listen to HER, but whenever I do encounter her music in one of these tournaments I do usually enjoy it. This is a solid track, another one with a real great bass groove driving it, easily my favorite part of the song.
9: Mine Forever - Idk, I generally like Lord Huron but this one just does nothing for me. It's a classy enough track for sure, I like the strings, but there's something about the vocal melodies that just really grates at my nerves, I never want to listen to the chorus.
8: New Shapes - Hey look, whenever I submit for a madness I always pick backroads shit that no one's listened to and it always flops, sometimes a guy's just gotta game the system a bit. But I mean, of course I wouldn't do that if I didn't love the song too, and New Shapes is easily in my top 25 of 2021. Not a huge fan of any of the artists involved individually, but I love the way they flow together on this track, overall it's such a pristine, catchy pop track, good stuff.
7: Sister Ray - Huh, surprised to see this do so well. It's fine, I don't mind it really, I just didn't think it was really memorable, borders on annoying at times. Maybe I did underrank a little bit though, the chorus is catchy.
6: Put on a Smile - Okay, I thought for a second that Silk Sonic had lost me when After Last Night didn't really stick the landing in the last seed, but this one reaffirmed that Silk Sonic are, in fact, really good. Think this is actually my second favorite track of theirs now, behind LtDO.
5: Justified - Again, Kacey did kinda manage to win me over this album cycle. Really pretty pop song here, I adore the chorus.
4: Revolver - Damn, this is a really surprising top 4. I do like the song, it is super catchy and has a ton of energy, easily something I'd come back to after the fact. But like, who is bulow. And as noted before, songs like this do show up in madnesses a lot and never fare quite as well. Good for Revolver though, I guess, always nice to see a rando in the top 5 amidst all the Japanese Breakfasts and Taylor Swifts.
3: In Hell - Jubilee is a good album, this is one of my favorite songs from it, it's very good, next.
2: Please - I don't know, I can usually enjoy Jessie Ware, I don't really buy into the hype as much as many though. I'm tired of seeing her in madnesses for sure though. This is far from her best track too, but it's fine, listenable.
1: The Only Heartbreaker - As much as I do like dramatic 80s pop revival, and this is big and dramatic and operatic as it should be, I just...cannot bring myself to like this as much as I should. And I really don't know why, it is up my alley fully. I just don't think Mitski is all that exciting a vocalist? I've never been a huge fan of hers, and I can name like probably 10 other songs and singers from 2021 that do the exact same thing that Mitski does here but like, way better. Caroline Kingsbury nailed this sound perfectly for me.

Who do we think wins? βThe Only Heartbreakerβ maybe? ^ also YES @ the Caroline Kingsbury mention, her LP βHeavenβs Just a Flightβ is fucking great. If you like 80s revival pop, youβll love it. The single βFall in Loveβ has a perfect melodramatic, scream-a-long chorus (thanks Au$tin)
