I mean this album broke some pure sales records not streaming records. Of course the article is more focused on the former. That’s not the issue. Whenever an album is a huge event on streaming he barely ever writes anything about it and goes in depth with unique information. He basically just writes the total streams it got and that’s about it. He does the same thing with every Taylor album release. Goes into paragraphs talking about CD sales, Vinyl sales, autographed sales, where it ranks on YTD sales lists, etc. He has never ever posted about anything YTD related to album streaming or what not. He has never posted about first day streaming. He never reveals the albums with the highest total streams to date even though they consistently revealed the albums with the highest total sales in Soundsdan era. Also through mid week he would write articles on Adele/Taylor sales. He wrote absolutely 0 articles mid week on Drake’s CLB streaming for example. We didn’t know any US total stream amounts until the first week numbers came in. We have to rely on Apple/Spotify doing press releases for first day streams instead. He does the bare minimum with reporting streaming related information. Isn't it possible that it's simply easier to get accurate midweek data for sales than streams? Yes, Spotify numbers are available daily, but aren't they somewhat unreliable until they've been filtered/reviewed each week (I mean, just look at the White Christmas situation this past week, we still don't know exactly what's up with that), and that's not to mention that there are many other streaming services that are harder to get daily numbers for. Billboard would look dumb if they reported midweek that an album had record-breaking streams only to later find out that half those were bots or something -- they don't want to report incorrect/unverified data. Furthermore, reporting on all the sales configurations is just a matter of having so many ways to slice the data, and lately there are often unusual feats. For example, if you time traveled back a couple decades and told them that 2021 would see record-breaking weeks for VINYL sales they'd look at you like you were crazy, but here we are! That's certainly noteworthy. And things like autographed versions and other weird collector items have come up more recently as major ways that artists are trying to boost sales, which are also newsworthy because they're novel and show how the industry is continuing to adapt. Generally they similarly report on streaming-related unique efforts, like more often referencing TikTok phenomenons or streams driven by challenges or playlisting. And it's really surprising you'd say Drake didn't get much coverage -- there was a ton written about his achievements, and in his case, most of the noteworthy stuff was on the Hot 100, so that's where those news stories tended to focus. I just don't think it's fair to diss Keith here. He writes in detail about a ton of data and has been doing so for decades.

Surprised Sting is so low. If Robert Plant is top ten and Springsteen is top 40 with a 42 year old concert recording, I figured a new Sting album would at least be near the top 50.

Folklore sold 615,000 in its first week, 30 sold 692,000. Hardly a ton! folklore had bundles iirc. Notice how they always conveniently ignore that!

Sales partially come from physical retailers whereas all streaming data comes from digital retailers, so I’m not seeing how it would make sense that streaming data is the one which is harder to get immediate numbers of… All weekly streaming numbers for albums/songs are finalized by Sunday when the Billboard 200 article is revealed, meaning it takes 2~ days to get filtered final data at most (Thursday numbers are finalized by Saturday night). Thus doing a mid week on Tuesday/Wednesday with streaming numbers would not be impractical. And he DID post about Scorpion’s streaming mid week which is why it’s annoying he then did nothing for CLB (despite having mid week articles on Folklore, Red, 30, etc): www.billboard.com/pro/drake-scorpion-breaks-one-week-us-streaming-record-three-days/They clearly are capable of producing mid week streaming numbers and other types of breakdowns similar to sales. It’s not whether it’s possible or not; it is. Also streaming records get as much publicity and coverage now as breaking sales records so I don’t buy the “it’s a trade magazine” nonsense. Record breaking music is record breaking music, and the industry is well aware in 2021 that streaming achievements hold more weight and relevancy regardless. He reports very little outside of the bare minimum on streaming, which is like 90% of consumption. Yet when an album gets big pure sales he writes paragraphs and paragraphs. Sure you all like his podcast but a spade is a spade. The streaming reporting from him could be expanded.

Great sales for Adele, a shame she couldn't break the vinyl record. I was expecting her to do a bit better on streaming too.
I'm interested to see how her second week pans out. Hopefully she can do another 200-300k. With quite a lot of vinyl left to sell, that might help bump up the numbers up as we get closer to Christmas.

One thing I’ve learned is that complaining about how someone else does their job, when you’ve never done the job yourself, is generally quite unfair. Particularly when you’re getting something for free.

Particularly when you’re getting something for free. Please stop. People complain about Billboard all the time….💀 It is nothing meant of malice but rather actually wanting them to do better. Saying that we read something for free so we can’t suggest anything is quite weirdly passive aggressive and dismissive — not to mention false. They like to paywall 90% of their articles and make large amounts of revenue from Billboard Pro - thus they are serving paying subscribers with these articles. If they’re going to go about trying to charge people to read articles (specifically us, people who actively keep up with Billboard daily) then certainly we should be encouraged to suggest what would be more useful in said articles lmao.

I agree with iHype here. It's amazing to me that they still report about the Top Album Sales chart most weeks, but don't even have a Top Streaming Albums chart.

hitsdailydouble.com/news&id=329404&title=WALLEN-FOR-THE-WINMonday, November 29, 2021 WALLEN FOR THE WINMorgan Wallen's Dangerous: The Double Album (Big Loud/Republic) will finish 2021 as the year's best-selling album, with a total projected close to 3.2m.Since spending its first 10 weeks at #1, Dangerous: TDA has remained in the Top 10. Wallen's will be the first country album to finish in the lead since the OG version of Taylor Swift's Fearless (Big Machine/BMLG) sold 3.2m in 2009. In the runner-up spot will be Geffen's Olivia Rodrigo, who appeared to be within striking distance a few months ago. Rodrigo's freshman set, SOUR, is now projected to land at around 2.75m for the year.

iHype, Keith is someone I’ve known for 25 years (we aren’t in touch these days but that’s just because our circles diverged awhile ago, I still think he’s a great guy), so you were insulting someone I know. I didn’t like that you were targeting him specifically.
But seriously, if you are unhappy with their coverage, you’d be better off getting results if you send feedback to them directly. I also just disagree with your premise — I always find the articles interesting and have never felt like they’re lacking details.

If I made similar complaints about the way the Hot 100 column was written or something you wouldn’t have batted an eye. The issue is not with anything I suggested or complained about but you thinking I was personally attacking him lol. Most of the Billboard editorials, columns, even charts, whatever could use some improvement. I’ll always point out what I think would be better or more useful. It will never be meant to personally critique the staff behind it.

And, you did call him out directly, so you did in fact personally critique the staff. I’d hope you’d stand up for a friend if you saw them being criticized. Anyway, no need to drag this out. This is why I typically just lurk.

The "legendary" archival album debuts in the top 10 across Billboard's Top Album Sales, Top Rock Albums, Tastemaker Albums & Top Current Album Sales charts.
Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band’s previously unreleased The Legendary 1979 No Nukes Concerts makes a top 10 debut across Billboard’s Top Album Sales, Top Rock Albums, Tastemaker Albums and Top Current Album Sales charts (dated Dec. 4). The album was recorded in September of 1979 at the Musicians United for Safe Energy (MUSE) concerts at Madison Square Garden in New York City. The set, released on Nov. 19, includes songs recorded over two nights — including “Thunder Road,” “Born to Run” and “The River.”
The album sold 19,000 copies in the U.S. in the week ending Nov. 25, according to MRC Data, across all of its formats combined (including editions containing a video of the same 13 songs in a concert film, such as a two CD/one DVD set and a two CD/one blu-ray package).
No Nukes debuts at No. 6 on Top Album Sales, No. 4 on Top Rock Albums, No. 4 on Tastemaker Albums and No. 6 on Top Current Album Sales. (Tastemaker Albums ranks the top-selling albums of the week at independent and small chain record stores.) No Nukes also enters at No. 33 on the Billboard 200 albums chart, giving The Boss his 41st chart entry and 32nd top 40-charting album on the tally. Billboard’s Top Album Sales chart ranks the top-selling albums of the week based only on traditional album sales. The chart’s history dates back to May 25, 1991, the first week Billboard began tabulating charts with electronically monitored piece count information from SoundScan, now MRC Data. Pure album sales were the sole measurement utilized by the Billboard 200 albums chart through the list dated Dec. 6, 2014, after which that chart switched to a methodology that blends album sales with track equivalent album units and streaming equivalent album units. For all chart news, follow billboard and billboardcharts on both Twitter and Instagram. Elsewhere on the Top Album Sales chart, Adele’s 30 makes a splashy debut at No. 1 with the biggest sales week for any album since 2017, as it starts with 692,000 copies sold. Taylor Swift’s former No. 1 Red (Taylor’s Version) falls to No. 2 in its second week with 67,000 copies sold (down 82%), Robert Plant and Alison Krauss’ Raise the Roof debuts at No. 3 with 38,000 and Twenty One Pilots’ Scaled and Icy returns to the top 10, as it re-enters at No. 4 with 23,000 (up 4,469%) after its release on vinyl.
TWICE’s Formula of Love: O+T=>3 falls 2-5 with 21,000 sold (down 64%), Silk Sonic’s (the duo of Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak) An Evening With Silk Sonic dips 3-7 with 17,000 (down 60%), Olivia Rodrigo’s former No. 1 Sour vaults 26-8 with 14,000 (up 77%) and Billie Eilish’s chart-topping Happier Than Ever zooms 23-9 with 13,000 (up 67%). The latter gain thanks to promotion of their vinyl releases at Target stores.
ABBA’s former No. 1 Voyage rounds out the top 10, as it falls 5-10 with 13,000 sold (down 33%).

With the streaming legs Lover has had I wouldn't be shocked if it eventually moved ahead of Folklore on that metric.
