Also I already only have 10 top 20s left. After saying this, I'm really quite shocked that I have the best average rankings in the top 10 lmao btw I'm fully expecting "Stand For Myself" to win still. However, it's only my fifth highest ranking left :o

I think most of the songs we just lost before top 10 were easily better than many of the songs that did make top 10. :/
Candi Carpenter's "Little Sparrow" is fantastic and she has a great voice. It still doesn't hold a candle to Dolly's tho, which is among her all-time best.

Wow, what a painful stretch leading up to the top 10. To lose my top 3 in one fell swoop... Yikes. I'm glad they all did so relatively well, but y'all really didn't leave me with a whole lot to root for in the top 10 I mean, I like everything fine enough, but nothing near the level of my top 3, as they were pretty much the only songs I have kept coming back to. "Raggedy Ann" in particular is just absolutely mesmerizing. Mindy Smith's vocal reminded me a lot of Alison Krauss here, which is a pretty big compliment! For anyone to be able to replicate Alison's delicate smooth soft tones speaks to a lot of talent on their end. Although Mindy seems to have a bit of power that she left on the back burner as well, which is something I'm not sure could be said for Alison (soft seems to be her only mode, lmao), which is partly why her vocal fascinated me so much here. Actually, I'm getting hints of Lee Ann Womack as well! Absolutely gorgeous vocal For "Whose Side You're On", I couldn't get over that steel guitar first of all... It was so complex, yet sounded so slick and smooth. Such a catchy opening lick!

The deja vu... Literally mte. This is the best song remaining by far, lol. This top 10 is honestly... very disappointing. Basically everything that went out in the 11-15 range is better than most of the songs still in.

Lonesome High is a great discovery for me, and surprised that it was so polarizing... Looks like it was favoured among the tractors though, and glad it made it this far, comparing me losing my #1 in late 20s last year in the same series...

Just made in top 10 of this rankdown is Allison Russell's Persephone, from her acclaimed album Outside Child released last year. She is 1/4 of the supergroup Our Native Daughters (the others being Rhiannon Giddens, Amythyst Kiah (which has a song higher than Persephone here) and Leyla McCalla). Persephone is a story about an abused child and her secret relationship with another girl in haven. The fleeting feeling of happiness and eagerness is enhanced by vocals and the clarinet solo, which sounds fresh in 2021 country-adjacent music. It's also her current single in Americana radio. This is a consistent top 10 contender. No particularly high ranks were lost except a top 5 from ccarter1023.

Jackie got the losing end of a tie, but more interesting is the other side of the tie which should be quite surprising for some of you. Being son of author Larry McMurtry, James McMurtry is a frequently-discussed underrated artist. I think it's Robert Christgau that brings him back to spotlight in critic circles after the release of Complicated Game, and after 6 years (which is 1 year shorter than the release gap between Complicated Game and the previous album still), he released a new album called The Horses and the Hounds. The moody violin made the song as it proceeds to unveil a tragic ending of a horse farmer with almost nothing left. Plus it’s engaging when the narrator broke out of character for a bit as shown by the sigh. Not surprised by the fact some people don't like the vocals. ccarter1023 loses his lowest rank, while singingrulebritannia loses a top 3, and zack97, Sambalada (thanks for the final push for this to make top 10 btw) and I lose a top 5.

Yes, I double checked the calculations and Stand For Myself exited at #8 at the cost of #1 from fearlessarrow and ccarter1023 . Condolences and you can proceed to blame one of the four bottom half rankers for that . What's more surprising though is this is not even a major top 5 contender. I don't think it needs any introduction at this point. To put it simple, it is the title track of Yola's second album released last year, and after fantano's top review it skyrocketed in popularity. Many people consider this to be one of the best songs from the album. I still love this song as this is one of the most powerful psychedelic closing tracks I have heard, particularly the outro where the piano simulates a power gathering explosive moment.

More #1 loss and this time it's from singingrulebritannia. We still have one song from their old albums that is elligible for the rankdown series, and they look like to be the most consistent performing artist in the series already. The Mercury is from their self-titled fourth album. Unlike the previous selections, this follows a loose lore of a character called Lorrie, a kind of badass and rambunctious woman, who flirts with the narrator while another character Jimmy is in the next bar stool. I love the general Red Dirt sound and the sudden halt near the end of the song. This is another constant top 10 contender which never left top 10 after the second submission.

You know this rankdown is wild when the last submission pushed a song from #2 to #6. At least it matches her performance in the previous volume? Let 'em Burn is a piano ballad from the Emily Scott Robinson's second album American Siren. Funny how a piano ballad ends up being the best song of 2021. The sophisticated piano playing and her soaring vocal performance at the end maximize the overwhelming feeling that this song provokes. Christianity may be a tight hanging rope for some people and they should be given a chance to be free, which conveniently circles back to the album’s argument of new inner faith. After some bipolar reveals, ccarter1023 can calm down as he got a perfect ranking. Trilogy and I lose a top 2. Meanwhile, Sambalada loses his lowest remaining rank.

Bones is from the new Charles Wesley Godwin album How The Mighty Fall which was released last year. In the song the narrator wanted a new beginning after living a dejected life, a familiar theme for these songs. However, I am always thrilled to hear the moment when the fiddle cues in before the final verse, and probably one of his lowest notes at the end, which makes it much more haunting. Moreover, it's nice that he is becoming more popular by being Zach Bryan's tour opener and having a song featured in a Spotify commercial.fearlessarrow got a perfect ranking. It gradually recovers after the slight dip in the 1/3 part of submission.

I think Neko Case's solo materials (in addition to Hold On Hold On) will be well-liked by most of Pulse, so I will definitely keep her around in this series. Man is the second single from her album The Worse Things Get, the Harder I Fight, the Harder I Fight, the More I Love You in 2013. I have seen some online comments that this song is about being trans. IMO it explores the other (masculine, animal) sides of her heart. They can be strong and tough and help her to stand by herself. Love the cool rock-leaning alt-country sound here. The one of many changes by Sambalada's list is shown here as it never entered top 5 of the rankdown until his #1 (my condolences).

Just shy from top 2 is Wild Turkey by Amythyst Kiah. This is taken from her album Wary + Strange released last year, and is considered by many one of the best songs from the album. I admit I didn't go back to this song as much as I want to, but that's more on production than the quality itself. With the atmospheric plucking and pounding drums near the end of the song, it is an uncomforting truth of aftermath of someone's death still lingers whether or not their close ones want to, especially from suicides. This is a major top 5 contender. Condolences to zack97 for losing his #1.
