Blinding Lights was a once in a lifetime hit for him. People need to lower their expectations a bit.

This obviously borrows from "Thriller" but I hear a hint of "I Want To Thank You" by Alicia Meyers in this as well. "I Want To Thank You" is credited. Kevin McCord who wrote it is listed as one of the writers.

I like this but it wasn’t one of the the album highlights for me. Then again, giving it a second listen this morning and it’s already growing on me.
This manages to remain just as 80’s as his previous era but different enough by ditching the new wave vibes. “Take My Breath” was similar in that regard, so I agree that this is far from a guaranteed mega smash. Either song would have stood a better chance had he held off in til now to drop the lead single (and done less features between the end of After Hours and now).
Oh, and I heard “I Want to Thank You” immediately. Nice use of the sample!

I like it quite a bit, that guitar lick is cute.
I do agree, not the best single choice though. I think he needed to release something downtempo after the tepid reaction to TMB, "Out Of Time" would have been a nice palate cleanser.

Not feeling this at all. The Thriller similarities aren’t helping either.

Falls flat for me. Much prefer "Take My Breath". Not sure how well this will do.

Blinding Lights was a once in a lifetime hit for him. People need to lower their expectations a bit. I agree, and I’m guilty of that. One of my brothers is a huge fan of The Weeknd and we were discussing the release of the album. Because Blinding Lights was so huge for so long, it’s hard not to compare his new songs to it. He had Save Your Tears, In Your Eyes and Save Your Tears remix as singles while it was doing well still, and since then he has had three (now four) singles, two of which sound relatively similar to it, while we still remember Blinding Lights. I feel he should have taken a longer break from the public eye. But my brother made a good point I think is true, he might not care anymore about chart success and instead just on keeping his fans happy

I don't expect anything to come close to "BL." Nothing he does will and that's just reality. But I think he still has the potential for massive international success for several more years. So I'm definitely approaching this from a chart watching perspective.
The more important question is, does he even give a sh*t at this point? There are several songs on here that sound like smashes to me, but the rollout doesn't indicate that he's too bothered by it. So maybe I just need to get out of that mindset and enjoy the music, because the album is solid.

Wait this uses the same sample that Mariah used for "Make it happen"! But Abel used it as a chorus melody

He's filmed a couple of videos since TMB was released , so I think there could be 1 or 2 more promoted radio singles with their respective music videos. Maybe a performance at SNL and a Jimmy Fallon one.

Elite production, I was kinda hoping for a video (this song is begging for one) immediately following Abel’s live stream last night but I agree that he seems more interested in the concept over singles.

So I'm definitely approaching this from a chart watching perspective. Reminds me of how everything Usher released was labeled a flop after "Yeah!" because people expected lightning to hit the same spot twice. Meanwhile Usher went on to have a run that most A-listers would still dream of. I can already see that happening with Abel! Anyway, this is beginning to remind me of "Faith" from After Hours.

Although I would have preferred it if either "Out of Time" or "Less Than Zero" were pushed as the 2nd single from Dawn FM instead, I'm still happy to see this song getting pushed as a single to Pop! The beginning very much reminded me of "Thriller" which was already a step in the right direction, And also the production in this was especially Mind Blowing! And of course The Weeknd's vocals were flawless throughout this entire song. While the lyrics themselves were an absolute blast to listen to!

A lot of these songs remind me of “I feel it coming.” It seems like he’s already been here before.

This song has reminded me of a long forgotten jam! (They share the same sample)

" I Heard You're Married" is getting pushed as a single alongside this. Hoping this ain't another "IFIC"/"Party Monster" case.

This was a good choice, this or Less Than Zero are obvious pop hits. I really like this and I hope it performs well.

This is a JAM. The witchy, cult vibe of the video reminded me of the movie "Suspiria" (the remake from 2018).

This song will grow on us I guess.
However my fave song by far in this album is “Out of Time”. Probably too slow to be a pop hit but I feel it could go #1 in R&B/Urban and mb even AC. Hope they push it there.

I see this stalling around the same area Take My Breath peaked on Pop.

I like this. During my first few spins, my instant single pick was "How Do I Make You Love Me?" (and I still feel that way)
I prefer both of them to Blinding Lights and Save Your Tears though. This album is a huge improvement, or a huge leap towards my taste at least

I don't get how anybody can hate this kind of music, yeah it sounds like The Weeknd's other recent hits but man it's groovy as hell.

My favorite on the album now. Verses and pre-chorus are excellent. I still think the chorus could hit a bit harder
