That trailer is incredible. It’s nice to hear the new song in the background! Guess I know what I’m doing Tuesday. Now to come down from the high of the announcement and try to work…

It’s nice to see her with a shorter do. I don’t love the cover but I don’t hate it. I want to see the doc, like now! I don’t know much about it, are there details on it? It feels like this is kinda uneventful tbh.

A dance-country blend, it sounds. It doesn't look like the full song is out yet?

The lyrics
[verse 1] Turn the light on And you're gonna see someone That's gonna be somebody someday
Invisible lines All the simple minds Thinking "don't know what to think or to say"
[pre-chorus] Hold me but don't you hold me down Change is gonna come But my patience's running out
Made a decision What the dictionary's Missing is my definition I'm not just a four letter word
[chorus] I'm not just a girl Just a girl I'm not just a girl Just a girl
I've packed my suitcases I'm going places I'm gonna rule the world
I'm not just a girl I'm not just a girl
[verse 2] We're sittin' in the kitchen And we're talkin' all in fiction And the truth is comin' out tonight
Is that what you expected? That I would just accept it? To stand behind and not beside
[bridge] Gonna put it on And wear it out Dress it up with attitude
I'm looking fine The night is mine I don't know about you
[chorus] I'm not just a girl Just a girl I'm not just a girl Just a girl
I've packed my suitcases I'm going places I'm gonna rule the world
I'm not just a girl I'm not just a girl
Oh just a girl I'm not just a girl
Just a girl I'm not just a girl

Oh lord. Those are terrible.
Edit: and 3 writers? Wow.

The song was written by Shania, Mark Ralph (who co-wrote a lot of Years & Years songs) and Wayne Hector (who co-wrote "Starships" by Nicki Minaj).

they chose the WORST song from the new scrapped album... it was probably for its name coz it was a good title for the doc

It’s not great (but I’ve given up on post-Mutt songs being great at this point) but it’s better than at least half of the Now album for me. At least it’s catchy. The biggest issue I see with her newer songs is she has a solid idea and an occasional strong line here or there, but the rest of the words don’t firm up the story and it just ends up being either a list or an assortment of random phrases. Oh well, I still love her!

....I really like the new song (and the snippets we heard of other new songs in the documentary). It appears I like things everyone else hates lol.

This has the attitude and flavor that she’s known for. Personally I think it fits what the documentary encompasses. All the way from her humble beginnings in Canada to where she is now. I know others will continue to criticize her voice, but I’m happy she’s still recording. Very pleased.

I’m with you - it’s so brave she’s still recording/returned to recording despite the obvious challenges and change in her voice.

I remember some of the reviews from the 'Now' album and a lot of them were criticizing her voice and I'm like.... she has no control over that so I don't know what they were expecting. Anyway like I said above, I'm loving the new song and I can't wait for the new album whenever that may come.

I still don't get the hate for Now. I listened to it twice in the past few weeks and find it just as enjoyable as her work with Mutt. There's only one or two songs I would cut but otherwise I find it solid and memorable.
She was never going to have the radio dominance she had from 1995-2003 and her voice has permanently changed, so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I just get tired of people trashing new music by established artists when it seems to come from behind nostalgia glasses rather than experience the new music as it is.
e.g. GaGa's Chromatica, Janet's Unbreakable, Mariah's Caution, Taylor's Folklore/Evermore, and Katy's Smile are all excellent bodies of work IMHO even if the chart success and sounds don't align with their past highs on radio, sales, and/or streaming.

Her work with Mutt Lange stands far far above anything else she has done, but that's fine for me. 'Shania Twain' as she broke through was the result of a true and complete partnership between them. And it shows in the work. Outside of maybe Poor Me, there wasn't anything I'd consider a keeper from Now, but again that is fine with me. Along with the songwriting not being as sharp, it's the production that stands out as being incredibly inferior. I liked the documentary, though it should have a better name. I'd prefer it if more of those artists they were showing with her in the end had gotten on camera for comments (especially Taylor Swift). My favorite part was when Jon Landau was talking about her and Mutt playing the backing tracks to Come on Over and singing over them.
It's also great seeing her be happy. I found her autobiography very powerful when I read it during a real low point when it was released. And at multiple times over the years, I've returned to the work she and Mutt did, and it holds up each time. I would buy a book, or books, that is just deep dives and recollections from her and Mutt on each of the songs on the three albums they made. Even Up!, which wasn't as strong as the previous two is a fascinating project due to the three versions.

I enjoyed the documentary. And to reiterate, I'm pleased "What Made You Say That" is getting exposure in the documentary and compilation.
No shame in the strongest material being with Mutt- that was a great collaboration.

I just finished watching the documentary. It was phenomenal and took me back to 1995 when I first discovered her on MOR music, they showed the "Any Man of Mine" video. Shania has had quite a life and her music has never failed to move something in me.
I love "What Made You Say That." And I am really enjoying the new song now that I've heard the whole thing. It's been great to see other artists talk about Shania with respect and appreciation. Edited my post to add that I love "Swingin' with My Eyes Closed" from the "Now" album.

I don't normally rewatch things once I watch them but I am tempted to rewatch the documentary because I loved it that much. The new song is so uplifting and I absolutely love it.

She is that bitch and has been since the first spin of "Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under" in 1995. She was hungry for it after The Woman in Me the same way Tina Turner was when she made Private Dancer.
But also, I can't believe she had the nerve to end the documentary with sessions about her new album that is never coming.

The original plan had to be to release the album alongside this (or the album on 9/2) with “Not Just a Girl” as the focus track. But obviously she scrapped it or something happened and now it’s just a highlights compilation with this one song.

Just finished watching the doc I liked it for what it was, but I think there were some important stuff missing like, I'm not a fan, so I don't know how she went from being a resort singer to signing a contract They made it seem as if she went to Nashville and labels were ready for her, so she just signed with any of them
But all in all, it's great to see how smart she is and how determined she was to be a worldwide success

But, I will say yesterday (July 26) was the day COO was certified diamond in 1999. It seems like the release of the documentary was intentionally released on that day. It wouldn’t surprise me if we also get the 25th Anniversary edition on November 4th.

Yeah all these people keep saying that she scrapped multiple albums but where is this coming from. I highly doubt she would give us snippets of songs in the documentary if we weren't going to get them on an album.

Shanias my favorite!
I was born 1993, (same month as the release of “What Made You Say That”) and truly the first global superstar I experienced in real time was SHANIA!
The loss of her voice and Mutt’s production was obvious but I don’t care. The love of her heart, spirit, and resilience is enough!
The song is fun :)

I really enjoyed the doc. There wasn’t too much I didn’t know but it was really nice seeing old footage of her in the studio, old pictures, interviews and such. :)
She is absolutely in my top 5 (George Michael, Madonna, Alanis, Shania, Missy Elliott), It’s amazing seeing how much of a visionary she is. I feel like people forget the STORM she was for those 2/3 albums.
Notice how they kept saying “diamond album” for Up!, but they used the amount totals for the other two albums. ;)
It was also nice watching those old white men record execs eat their words.

Does anything think 25th anniversary of the woman in me is worth it? I’m at sunrise records and I’m not sure if I should get it. Lol It’s 30 vs 40 on Amazon. I adore the original album, just not sure if I’ll like the remixes and such. I don’t know if it’s special enough. It’s the large book form one, with 3 CDs.
