I miss 'Distance' on this list; but then again it was 'Final Distance' that was the single and while I get why she re-did it I always preferred the original upbeat version. :(

I miss 'Distance' on this list; but then again it was 'Final Distance' that was the single and while I get why she re-did it I always preferred the original upbeat version. :( I added and deleted the original "Distance"! 1. There are three much bigger hits from their sophomore album 2. I wanted to keep the list as short as possible and 20 sounds like the right number 3. I had to do the same to "Blue", "Goodbye Happiness", "Stay Gold" and "Michi" which are some of my favorite songs by them :'(

Thanks for the reminder. Because Utada Hikaru's Instagram still shows "she/they", I was under the assumption that either way is okay. But I just checked Utada's staff account and it seems like it has shifted to they/them pronouns recently, so I'll change my usage from this thread on. https://www.instagram.com/p/CZGr52wJLYP

Even if they still use she/they, it's not a good idea to just use she as it is a bit dismissive of their identity, I do not know what Utada personally feels about it, but in general, people that use multiple pronoun sets want to also be called the sets that haven't been used their entire life

Just curious question. (Feel free to move this convo to DM.)

This is way harder than I thought it would be, and I already was expecting it to be hard. It's honestly agonizing trying to rank these songs.

Kicking off the reveals with #20~16 today!!
#20 最後のキスは (Our last kiss) タバコの flavor がした (Had the flavor of tabacco) ニガくてせつない香り (A scent of bitterness and sorrow)
"First Love" is the third single released by Utada Hikaru from their debut album of the same name. The song was released in both 8cn mini CD and 12cm standard CD formats, and combinedly sold over 800,000 copies, making it the 18th best-selling single in Japan in 1999.
The song was the theme song of the hit TV series Majo no Jōken (Terms for a Witch) that featured the tabooed relationship between a high school math teacher with her underage male student. Thanks to the impact of this TV series, "First Love" became a sleeper hit beyond Japan, and has been a karaoke staple over the last two decades in Asia.

I didn't know the majority of these before doing this rankdown if I'm being honest, so had no idea this was a theme song to a show. I liked it, personally.

It was a great song, but it's my least favorite vocal performance from Utada. They were probably 13/14 when recorded this, and it shows how much they've improved as a vocalist, even when compared with songs from their second album. (Also, I've heard this song way TOO many times.)

#19笑える話 (This is so laughable) 傷つけられても I'm back for more (I might get hurt but I'm back for more) 君に addicted かも (I'm probably addicted to you)
"Addicted to You (UP-IN-HEAVEN MIX)" is the fourth single released by Utada Hikaru, being the lead single from their highly anticipated sophomore album Distance. The song marked Utada's first collaboration with American producer duo Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis. Its "UNDERWATER MIX" was included in the single as a side-B. The song debuted at #1 in Japan and was the 6th best-selling single in Japan in 1999. It remains Utada's best-selling single to date, with 1.8 million copies sold in total.

I didn't know the majority of these before doing this rankdown if I'm being honest, so had no idea this was a theme song to a show. I liked it, personally. A lot of J-pop songs are theme songs to shows/movies/TV commercials, it's a common way to promote songs in Japan (called a "tie-up" in local lingo). It also helps that Japanese shows typically only run for 3 months. So multiple shows on multiple TV stations + 4 of those 3-month periods in a year adds up to a good amount of slots for songs to appear in shows. Shows usually have an opening theme and an ending theme so that doubles that amount as well. "First Love" is so iconic in Japan that I'm a little surprised to find it at the bottom, but it was also never among my favorites from them so I don't particularly mind seeing it out right now.

#18今日は贈ろう 涙色の 花束を君に (Let me give you a tear-colored bouquet today)
"花束を君に Hanataba wo Kimini (A Bouquet for You)" is the dual second single from Utada's eighth studio album Fantôme alongside "真夏の通り雨 Manatsu no Tõriame (Rain like Midsummer)". Dedicated to their late mother Fuji Keiko, who was a famous Enka (tranditional Japanese) singer, this song marked Utada's exploration of a traditional Japanese folk-pop sound and became a huge hit in Japan after Utada's four-year hiatus since 2012's "Sakura Nagashi" for the movie Evangelion: 3.0.
"Hanataba wo Kimini" was selcted by Japan's national TV station NHK as the theme song for its 2016 morning TV series Toto Neechan (Father-like Older Sister), which achieve a phenomenal 22.8% audience rating. Thanks to the show, the song sold more than 750,000 digital copies and was the 4th and 44th most downloaded song in Japan in 2016 and 2017.
