The winter freeze is long over. Last year on Super Bowl week, the Top 3 songs (drivers license, Up, and Blinding Lights) all had over 300 points. The #1 song this week may not even do 250 points.

Levitating is the main wild card here: HITS lists a major bump in audio streams that seems possibly erroneous; if so, it's instead seeking to stick around the 16-20 range. That's What I Want and Surface Pressure remain with their funky factors from last week: I overestimated the former last week and yet again it's in a margins game for #10, the latter I had to compensate for lacking a video in YouTube's tracking. The biggest debuts of the week (possibly Stay Away if iTunes margins pan out and the Fivio/Ye/Keys collab) might be in that range as well, but seem pretty far away from the top 15: after Bad Habits, things should be in the 12,500 and under zone. D2C orders for Nicki Minaj were relatively tiny this week (~3.1k), so Bussin' and Do We Have a Problem shouldn't be in the range.

It's obviously because Hip-Hop was benefitting from sales in the 90s and wasn't radio-friendly even with Urban at that point, which was still predominantly geared towards R&B music. Once the sales for singles were dying the genre was in a weak spot on Hot 100... but that was very brief and changed overnight in 2002. (Ja Rule, Nelly, Eminem, etc all had humongous crossover runs back to back over night. )

I'm looking at the 2000 top tens and there was literally only like 1 or 2 Hip-Hop songs that managed to go top 10 that entire year. I've never seen anyone mention that lull period. Then two years later there was multiple Hip-Hop songs top 10 any single given week.

Honestly - we are still in a pandemic, it is winter/cold in many places, and lots of people are pretty burnt out on work/dealing with it all. Maybe people just aren’t going to new music and instead are going to music from better days.

Yeah I would chalk it up to pop acts like Britney, NSYNC, BSB, etc and alt-pop acts like Sugar Ray and Smash Mouth all dominating radio. Rap couldn't get a toe hold in that radio environment and had no single sales to make up for it. But rappers were still selling tons of albums, with DMX, Eve, Ruff Ryders, Jay-Z,Foxy Brown, Nas, Biggie, LL Cool J, Eminem, Mystikal, and Nelly all topping the Billboard 200 in 99/00. A year or two later radio finally caught up to that.

Exactly! We can also make a difference between a universal classic and a genre classic... "Billie Jean" is a universal classic that everybody knows despite age, race or nationality. Similar to "Bohemian Rapsody"

"Nothin' but a G thang" is definitely a hip hop classic that might not be as universal as the previous examples. The same way "Around the world" by Daft Punk is a classic in the dance and electronic music genres.

I think the most important factor to look at - beyond recurrent plays and streams - is time. As I said, it's easier to say songs from the 80s and older are classics because they've been around for 40+ years. We're seeing it now with songs from the 90s with acts (I'm looking at acts who are alive and touring) like Nas, Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Beastie Boys, Backstreet Boys, Shania Twain, Garth Brooks, Metallica (this is who I want personally to perform as soon as possible), Rage Against the Machine, Mariah, and Boyz 2 Men now being considered classics artists and legends.

Hell, now that the 2000s are starting to become nostalgic, I was talking about this with my brother and I'd love to see either a Timbaland or Pharrell set where they play their biggest hits and perform alongside their biggest collaborators, or a Gorillaz set where they work with different artists.

No chance Easy on me is going #1 again. Grammy boosts last year were so incredibly weak and it's dropping hard on radio. Could see olivia taking it w/ a new song performed there considering she's gonna have a big night

Because, if these are real for Bruno, then Heat Waves has a real chance this week to overtake it.

Bruno got 21.3 streams on HDD + around 1/2 of the youtube streams 10.6 = 32.9 total streams.

Heat Waves will get around the same streams or very slightly less than it got last week. The difference will be less than 20 million streams.

This is one of my favorite Top 10's of all-time. The Johnny Come Lately song going to #1, and I always wonder what song on the 1962 Top 10 Bob Seger was humming in Night Moves.
