Artist: Jelly Roll Single: "Son Of A Sinner" Writers: David Ray Stevens, Ernest Keith Smith, and Jason DeFord Label: Warner/Stoney Creek/BMG Nashville Impact Date: April 18 (All Access)
Chart Run: 56 - 59 - 59 - 55
So this song just debut at #56 on the airplay chart, just above Son Of A. While I doubt it is an official single that was added (I only saw 2 adds on the Mediabase thread), it might be interesting to discuss its debut on this thread, as it was a bit of a surprise/unusual chart move? Please feel free to move this to non-single thread if that's more appropriate.

“Dead Man Walking” currently in the top 10 on active rock. Which definitely is a rock song. This… not sure what to think of this one.

This dude is extremely talented, as poster above noted he currently has a hit rock song out too. This totally fits the format, and I’m all for songs by artist with country influences charting every now and then, much like Elle King is right now. Hope this one continues to blow up.

I think if they give this even just a bit of a proper push it'll be a huge hit. Not sure on if he'll be for everybody but I sense a hit here.

My friend saw him live and said he was pretty great. This ain't my thing and I'm not a fan of his voice, but I could see this doing well for him.

The industry definitely shoved a lot of Wallen/Ernest/Hardy related contents to us.

I was saying in the alt thread for Dead Man Walking (which I love), I’m a huge fan of Jelly Roll and I can see him being A breakthrough Grammy nominated type artist simple due to his genre bending. I could see this song making a dent on this format too.

Surprised they haven't pushed "Save Me" with how well it's done.

It’s so odd that this one is just taking off at country radio. The song is high quality no doubt, but he’s still a complete unknown to most country radio listeners. Can someone in the know explain how this has just rocketed up the charts so fast? Was there always intentions to push Jelly Roll at country radio?

[ Similar to “Don’t Come Lookin”, Audacy stations have been adding and playing this the past few weeks

He's grown on me... his song "Dead Man Walking" is charting on Active Rock and it's an amazing song, and I love his voice on that track. I like this song too now, but I def prefer him doing rock.

Yea I like that song better than this one and but honestly feel like he fits both formats pretty well and hope they continue to send diffeeent singles to both formats to build his foundation. His concerts could have a very interesting mix of people lol. Dead Man walking hit #1 on Active so he definitely has some momentum there too.

Who would’ve ever thought there’d be a hit on the country charts by an artist named Jelly Roll?

Wow, “she” could definitely work at radio. Very catchy. Would love to see him string together a couple hits in a row.

Jelly Roll Tops Country Airplay Chart: ‘There Is No Greater Reward Than to Have the No. 1 Song on Country Radio’ "Son of a Sinner" becomes his first leader on the tally.
BY JIM ASKER
JJelly Roll (aka Jason DeFord) achieves his first No. 1 on Billboard’s Country Airplay chart (dated Jan. 14) with his first entry, “Son of a Sinner.”
In the tracking week ending Jan. 5, the song, released on Bailee & Buddy/BMG/Stoney Creek, increased by 18% to 26.4 million audience impressions, according to Luminate.
“There is no greater reward for a singer and songwriter in Nashville, Tenn., than to have the No. 1 song on country radio,” Jelly Roll, 38, says. “Now imagine that happening to a guy that grew up in this town … a guy that at every turn for the first 25 years of his life made the wrong decision. Imagine everyone telling that guy he had no chance at country radio. If you can imagine that, then you can understand why I’m so filled with gratitude as tears stream down my face while I type this … I currently have the No. 1 song on country radio. Thank you to Jon Loba [president BBR Music Group/BMG Nashville], BMG and every single person that helped make this dream come true.”
Jelly Roll, who grew up in the Nashville suburb of Antioch, co-authored “Sinner” with Ernest K. Smith and David Ray Stevens. It’s from his 2021 album Ballads of the Broken.
While “Sinner” is Jelly Roll’s launch Country Airplay appearance, he’s had success in other genres. Last May, “Dead Man Walking” led Mainstream Rock Airplay for a week. His highest charting set on Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums, No Filter, with Lil Wyte, reached No. 33 in 2013.
As “Sinner” reaches the Country Airplay pinnacle, it dethrones Morgan Wallen’s “You Proof,” which rang up a record 10 nonconsecutive frames at No. 1. “Proof” descends to No. 2 on the Jan. 14 dated list (25.6 million, though up 12% as non-holiday hits gain as seasonal songs clear out).
Meanwhile, “Sinner” is the latest rookie entry to lead Country Airplay, following Bailey Zimmerman’s “Fall in Love” on the Dec. 7 chart.
