You know what, this isn't her worst single when Smoke Break exists though.

I didn't know Cry Pretty was so disliked. Some of my favorites are on there: Low, Spinning Bottles, Drinking Alone. I also like some others like Ghosts on the Stereo and Backsliding. Cry Pretty is great live.

Not in top 200 of US Spotify chart. Debuts with 300,529 total streams on Spotify. Good thing Carrie has the good support on iTunes because between Spotify and Amazon (#70) she's really underperforming there on streaming which is understandable, but I was expecting a bit more especially on Amazon. I see this being a moderate hit at best. Top 10 on Country Radio.

No, "Circles Around This Town" debuted with 297k in the U.S while Carrie's reflect overall streams. Maren still has the most recent highest streaming debut. She ranked at #111 on the U.S Spotify chart despite 2 album bombs that debuted the same day.

Thanks. Do we know how many total streams Maren accumulated?
I think it all just amounts to a generational thing. “Circles” didn’t reach #1 on iTunes, but “Ghost Story” did. I don’t expect Carrie’s solo music to ever move the needle much in terms of streaming because that’s just not the platform for her audience.

I’ve been to multiple of both Maren’s and Carrie’s concerts and Maren’s audience definitely skewed younger than Carrie’s, which makes sense considering their ages and when they started getting hits.

Circles is the most recent debut to achieve good numbers, but the highest of the recent ones was Kacey's "Justified", which debuted at #23 with 595k
It's tricky to compare artists from different generations though... Kacey and Maren broke out almost a decade after Carrie did. I think Miranda's numbers would probably make more sense for reference (considering they're contemporaries)

"Ghost Story" is okay but not lead single material by any means – the chorus lacks progression and the song kinda just meanders until the last chorus when Carrie changes the notes up a bit. I don't know if I see this getting her out of her current lull at radio...
There's something about the whispers at the beginning that kinda make me feel uneasy too, lol.

Lmao welcome to the thread of pedantic criticisms and unfair expectations. “It’s not the best thing she’s ever recorded, so it was a horrible choice for lead single!” Carrie’s new releases and the shallow nitpicking are about as predictable as the tides at this point. I’m going to go ahead and be one of the first to say that this is absolutely amazing, with no qualifiers to try to minimize my opinions to make them fit in with the consensus that this isn’t among her best work. Carrie’s vocal inflections in the verses are really cool, the melody of the chorus is insanely catchy, the lyrics are strong from top to bottom, the hook is really fresh, the 3/4 beat gives it a unique personality and cadence, and the arrangement is brimming with tons of really cool things that people are apparently not even trying to listen for because they’d rather find things to criticize (like, the literal first thing I noticed was all the cool steel guitar riffs in the background throughout…).
This is better than at least 6-7 tracks on Blown Away (the album that is somehow always propped up around here as her magnum opus despite being more filler than hit). The song it most reminds me of sonically is “Something In The Water”, which is still a REALLY worthy comparison even if we were expecting it to be like “Blown Away”! Okay, back to the regularly scheduled moping and whining.

Okay, so I've sat with this for a few days now and may count for 1/5 of her Spotify streams, so I feel like I can give a more accurate, less reactive opinion of the song.
I love the lyrics, but I think more development in the story could make it more effective (an additional verse/chorus).
Melodically, I love it, and the hook is super strong. I found it instant and catchy.
I think it's a gorgeous, emotive vocal from start to finish, and I'm obsessed with her lower register. More of that please, Carrie.
Echoing others... the production. While it sounds fine, and I like how it adds an intensity to the song (which I'd be surprised if the songwriters intended), I think they could have stripped it back a bit. They could have easily incorporated more country instrumentation (banjo, please) and tuned down the production a bit, which would have really enhanced the song. I know David and Carrie are capable of solid country production, as they produced "My Savior" together. CCM is not the vibe most of us want from Carrie.
Overall, I really enjoy the song, but I feel like a different production approach could have elevated it to a top-tier song in her strong catalog.

Yeah, it kind of pains me to see all the negative reception on here because, like bboat11, I find this to be genuinely fantastic and I really have nothing to criticize here. I feel like this is a nice change of pace for her, and this is a topic she hasn’t really explored with previous lead singles. This feels really fresh and, man, what an absolutely stellar chorus and vocal performance as a whole. The melody has really been sticking with me since first listen and, while I usually like more organic instrumentation, the production really doesn’t bother me here. Her lead singles are usually nowhere near the best on the album, so if this is the “worst” she’s got from this project, we’re in for a treat from the queen of modern country music. She knew what she was doing.

I disagree with most people in the production department. I love this production from her (as she has done it in multiple songs). It's very reminiscent of "Something in the Water" and I just love that part of it in particular.

Yeah sorry, this doesn’t do much for me. It has a great hook, and Carrie sounds great as always, but overall the production makes it pretty boring IMO. I’ll give it a chance to grow on me, but if it wasn’t Carrie I doubt I’d ever give it another listen.

Fortunately nobody has done that in this thread yet, but that is the other extreme to which Carrie's threads tend to oscillate, so it's only a matter of time :)

That’s one of her better debuts of all time—actually, one of *the* best, if I’m not mistaken. Easy #1, I think. IIDLY really brought her back—and radio seems like it was clamoring for her.

Strong debut. Proud of her! 17 years into her career and still pulling a top 30 debut with her, what, 7th or 8th lead single, if you count “Something in the Water,” too? That’s amazing.

I will say while the debut spot is good and it is definitely a solid start I am a bit shocked this only got 79 adds on Mediabase. Obviously on paper that sounds good, but I was expecting a little bit more since this is a Carrie Underwood lead single. Still a solid start for this song and I do think it is probably way too early to judge how this song's chart run will truly turn out since it has only been out for a few days

Yeah I was hoping for a little more adds. Maren and Miranda both got around 100 for their lead singles.

Yep I looked it up, Maren Morris got 101, Miranda Lambert got 102, and in comparison 79 doesn't look quite as strong (it got the same amount of adds as Dustin Lynch's latest just for a reference point) still not bad but I am shocked it wasn't at the same level as Maren or Miranda.

Only 79 adds and already a Top 30 hit. That’s queen s**t. I’m sure the adds number will grow dramatically.

Definitely a good thing, I’m thinking. I was pretty confident already, but I have zero doubt now that this is going to at LEAST finish in the Top 5–and like I’ve said, I think it might even reach the summit.

I love that this debuted high, but y'all... almost every lead single from anyone with a B-list or higher debuts top 30 on country radio these days because of the prearranged airplay from radio conglomerates like iHeartRadio. It's really not extraordinary that she debuted at #25.

But I do still think it’s pretty excellent that a woman is still able to carry the pull that she does after nearly 2 full, uninterrupted decades of work.

It's great that Carrie is still doing well and not knocking her at all, but this was basically the expected outcome. Recent(ish) examples of first-week debuts: #19 "Undivided" - Tim McGraw/Tyler Hubbard #20 "If I Didn't Love You" - Jason Aldean/Carrie Underwood #21 "Every Girl in This Town" - Trisha Yearwood #21 "I Should Probably Go to Bed" - Dan + Shay #22 "Homecoming Queen? - Kelsea Ballerini #22 "I Was on a Boat That Day" - Old Dominion #23 "I Bet You Think About Me" - Taylor Swift #24 "If I Was a Cowboy" - Miranda Lambert #24 "Beers and Sunshine" - Darius Rucker #25 "Old School" - Toby Keith #25 "Same Boat" - Zac Brown Band #25 "Circles Around This Town" - Maren Morris #25 "Ghost Story" - Carrie Underwood
#26 "Still the Same" - Sugarland #28 "Come Back as a Country Boy" - Blake Shelton #30 "23" - Sam Hunt #32 "Party Mode" - Dustin Lynch #32 "Last Night Lonely" - Jon Pardi #33 "Glad You Exist" - Dan + Shay #35 "Minimum Wage" - Blake Shelton There's probably more I missed, but... yeah, it's pretty much the current standard for anyone with any sort of decent name recognition.
