Marina - The Family Jewels Rankdown (Finished)

Easily one of my favorite albums of 2010s. The Family Jewels, released on February 22nd of 2010, is the debut album of Marina & the Diamonds . Releasing to positive critical success and modest commercial success in Europe, where it reached #5 on the UK album charts, the album was the launchpad for a then 24 year old Marina. Since then she has become the underrated pop darling she is today, having dropped her fifth album last year. The album itself being a 15 track long indie pop and art pop record with the lyricism revolving around modern social standards, commercialism, and femininity, wrapped together in the unique vocals and quirks of the young Welsh singer-songwriter.

As one of Pulse's biggest Marina fans, this was always the intent. I love Electra Heart and Froot just as much as I love TFJ, Ancient Dreams In A Modern Land is a solid album, and thats it.
Not forgetting any albums here, definitely not nope not at all.

My Thoughts: So this bonus track/title track is easily one of my least played songs from the record but I still love it. Lyrically the song is her reflecting over the divorce of her parents and her place within the matter, a common theme throughout the album and even some of her later work.

My Thoughts: Track #4 off the album, definitely one of the more vocally quirky cuts on the record and basically is her feminist anthem. It never has been a favorite for me but I enjoy the quirks of it.

My Thoughts: Track #8 off the album, lyrically it is focused on her being an introvert which is a mood but something about this does not hit as hard as it should for me weirdly enough. I still very much enjoy it all the same though.

Not surprised about title track being last, it’s good but honestly outclassed. Girls is one of those songs on the album that I do enjoy quite a bit and enjoy listening to (especially compared to other songs on the album), but also isn’t something I return to as much as other songs on TFJ.

My Thoughts: Track #9 off the album, easily one of the most outlandish songs in her discography. The song lyrically is about a dream where she watched a friend's dog and somehow upon picked it up and broke the dogs legs. So in the dream she decides to not face the consequences and goes on the run, leaving the dog to die. I really enjoy the chorus, bridge, and melody but the verses and theme do not really hit the mark for me. I still enjoy the song but I come back to this the least.

I really like this album and remember listening to it several years ago when I first got into Marina during the Electra Heart era. It was nice going back and listening to it since I hadn't in a while.

None of the songs on this album are bad in my opinion... some are just more my style than others I guess. Not too surprised with the first three out. I probably would have ranked "The Outsider" a bit higher back in the day but it didn't do much for me on my recent listens. "Seventeen" wasn't on the version of the album that I had so it's the only song I was unfamiliar with. I tried to rank it based on where I think it would end up had I been familiar with it for 10 or whatever years.

EDIT: I see "Guilty" is out now too. I do enjoy that one.

My Thoughts: Track #6 off the album, one of the more vulnerably piano led cuts on the record, Obsessions lyrically is focused on her OCD and how it affects her relationship. Did not expect this to get a polarizing response let alone the most polarizing one.
