The last of the 70's. And what a way to close it out. Thanks for all the hard work you put into these and the great extras. So the question I have, which is BOC's best? Burning for You or (Don't Fear) The Reaper? I'm guessing most people would go w/ DFTR.

Year-end Chart Closeness: Rankdown Closeness Perfect Rankings: We have truly reached the end of one road. Thank you all--participants, commenters, viewers, opponents, etc.--for bringing out the camraderie for this final edition of retro mainstream rock rankdowns. When the rock subforum planned this series out 5 years ago, I don't know if they thought we would even tackle the 80s, much less the 70s. But we trudged along through thick and thin, came from the worst years of the format to the best years. And the journey was as unforgettable as the destination. Now, we can finally continue the last leg of rock chart rankdowns--the remaining years of retro Triple A. aerodynamite has agreed to host 2013, and he will be opening the rankdown sometime in June. Not immediately, though. Not to toot our own horns too hard, but I think we as a community deserve some downtime to really take in what we just accomplished. See you again soon!

Both in my top 5. 2. Crazy on You - HeartA Heart classic in my top 3. Does it surprise anyone? This is a great song. Ann's vocals and the guitar hook take this to borderline 70's Heavy metal for me. The riff feels like soemthing in a Black Sabbath song. The song is basically about a chick wanting to make wild crazy love and forgetting about everything else. My kinda woman. For all it is worth Heart was still in a way my Crown band with two songs in my top 5. I found both of thier jams to be on the fierce rock side. 1. (Don't Fear) The Reaper - Blue Öyster CultApart from my obvious top 2 this one easily makes my top 5. ANother song that feels like 70's Heavy Metal. That breakdown in particular feels like the Heavy metal vibe amnd sounds like a totally different song. The vibe of the song is about crossing over and is pretty creapy if you think how enticing this Reaper is trying to be in the song. I can also thank Rob Zombie for including this one in reimagined version of Halloween and relighting my interst in the song. singingrulebritannia Bitchin' Top 2 man. Loads of fun ranking 70's rock and discovering songs and finally who sang them after all these years. Love the live videos. I still love the 80's the best, but it was these initial album rock bands like Zeppelin, Heart, ELO, Queen, Aerosthmith and Kiss that kept the Hard rock flag swinging proud in the 80's. I know there are more 70's jams I'd like to rank if we had gone deeper, but I think these last few years we ranked really opned the door for that harder rock sound to flourish on the charts.

this rankdown may have somehow allowed Boz Scaggs into the top ten, but I can't deny The Reaper is one of the most legendary ways the mainstream rock series could have ended. As poorly as the top ten went for me (like Rhiannon over Landslide? C'mon dudes...) I'm only really sad I wasn't around to do any here but the last two years. Sure I'll have the 2020s to fill my repertoire, which should be its own fun, but looking back at old forgotten rock songs of the 70s was something special. Thanks Gates for organizing it all!

{THE INEVITABLE FINAL RETRO WORD WALL...FOR NOW}#10: On one hand, "Landslide" not top ten. On the other hand, "Lowdown" boosted into the top ten. Eh, I can live with that. #9: The grooviest groove that Bowie ever made. I keep hearing that this is one of the weak points on Station to Station, and, uh...no? Not even close lol #8: I was expecting this to be quite a bit higher in this top ten. Interesting. #7: "3 7" Geez. I'm ashamed to say that either this was a first listen, or I haven't listened to it in long enough time that I didn't remember it. Either way, this was really good. #6: Now this just makes me wonder how "Jailbreak" would have done, and I'm sad again. #5: This probably means that "Stayin' Alive" would have won if it showed up in 1977, but I probably still would have ranked this ahead of it. What a freaking banger. #4: This was the song I expected to win the whole time, and not just because they just won last year. Highkey glad it didn't, it's obviously pretty damn good, but it's one of their weaker singles from these last couple of years, to be honest. #3: Man, I was hoping this wouldn't top "Turn to Stone", just because that's one of my personal favorite songs of this decade. Oh well, the potential toppers of this song could have definitely been weaker than this. #2: Really, if nothing else, thank god these last couple of years have just sonned the shit out of "Alone". #1: Also a BOC winner that I'm fully on board with, if only because of what "Burnin' for You" beat to get there. I feel bad for the people who listened to this song on the radio in the mid-70's and had to experience this song without its solo. Those poor souls. Well...it's over. singingrulebritannia, thank you for leading us to the end of this long journey WAIT, NVM, THAT'S RIGHT, AAA

My dad hosted a radio show with the frontman of this band in the 80s The song was a Hot 100 #1 and the 5th most popular song of the year EXTRA Play That Funky Music Wild Cherry
I have a vivid memory from my childhood when my family was eating at Pizza Hut (yes, they used to have dine-in) & this song was playing. My dad got soooooo angry & yelled at our server to stop playing such vile music. My dad never realized that fuNk was different than the word where "C" is the 3rd letter. My dad also got riled up when Lionel Richie's "Say You, Say Me" played in the car once...he was fine with it until the bridge. ...sigh... thanks for hosting singingrulebritannia - we have truly achieved something awesome going all the way back to the origins of Rock format charts! now to hopefully find some diamonds in the rough of retro AAA

Kid Charlemagne This was my highest ranked discovery, it has more guitar for Steely Dan than I recall in the others we’ve considered.
Magic Man Crazy On You versus Magic Man was a tough decision. Both have melody, range, riffs and cool arrangements but I gave the edge to Magic Man for its exquisite 2 minute music break. It’s quintessentially psychedelic, playful, everything-about-the-70s sound incredible to me.
The Boys Are Back In Town - Thin Lizzy The boys here like their jukeboxes and beer. I always hear this on the Moose in Muskoka, the station ‘that puts the wattage in your cottage’.
You Should Be Dancing - Bee Gees I love that Grohl reminded us how rhythmic and rockin’ this song really is.
Crazy on You Outstanding on all fronts. I don’t get how Magic Man was a top 10 but this one didn’t take? It’s the clear favourite here.
Don’t Fear The Reaper Another exquisite guitar solo. Kudos to BOC, this remains the eerie unofficial theme for the original Halloween.
All in all BOC is the only song I would have accepted as winner over Heart on this specific list so this is a righteous finale. Thank you!
