Seeing Cruel Summer explode right now makes me think back to some of Katy's "missed" hits that I think had a chance to smash. I know its a different situation and I'm not sure any of those songs are streaming like Cruel Summer is/was, but I can still dream, lol. Legendary Lovers and Walking on Air for the win!! |

Katy should be in the top 3 contenders for the Vanguard. The award is a career legacy award, it has nothing to do with an artist’s current status. And when it comes to Katy’s videography, her legacy is iconic.

Roar is the most-viewed female video of all-time, with 3.85 billion.
Dark Horse has 3.56 billion as well. #3 among women.
she is certainly deserving of the award, but I do get what Billboard is saying — Vanguard award is the one big award that MTV can use to bring in viewers. there aren't very many people willing to tune into a washed up and forgotten award ceremony to watch Katy Perry, not in 2023. in that sense, I get why Selena Gomez, Miley Cyrus and Ariana Grande are more favorable.
let's be real, who this year's award goes to depends mostly on whether Taylor Swift wants it or not.

Smile is her second best album after TD. And I have a soft spot for Witness, it just needed some pruning.

Tbh, Teenage Dream has fallen to third in her discography for me. I love Prism so much. It might not be the most cohesive album but there’s so many good songs on it. Smile is my second album because it’s another album with lots of bops and the album sorta tells a story of Katy coming out of a bad place. But honestly, her top 3 albums are all amazing. Also, Witness is unrated af. OOTB is decent but my least favorite of her albums.
My ranking would be:
1. Prism
2. Smile
3. Teenage Dream
4. Witness
5. One Of The Boys

for me. Everything about Witness is perfect for me, I love the sound, the lyrics and idk if it makes sense but I sympathy love it because it flopped? Would always remain my #1 Katy Perry album. Smile is a solid album too! It was on repeat for me till the end of 2022 but I haven't been playing Katy a lot these days (the wait for KP6 is a loooootttt) so it's still #2. Teenage Dream and One Of The Boys are solid albums themselves but I became a KatyCat in 2019 so I wasn't super active during those eras to be a massive fan of them. Been obsessed with Method To My Madness though, the leaker (which I kinda suspect is her considering the lyrics lol) threw out the littlest of crumb and I'm eating it up!

I really like Katy. I really hope she can have a big moment again (if she wants it), like how Mariah did in the 2000s. Commercially, I think Smile is similar to Mariah's Charmbracelet as a sort of career stepping stone during lingering negative general public sentiment. I've seen positive sentiment increasing since Smile was released when people are engaging with Katy content online. Hoping that KP6 will be a smash. All it would take is willingness from Katy, and good marketing. We are about to enter the 2010-2014 fashion microcycle so maybe the public/younger listeners will be more receptive to her music this time around when she releases.

I dont think she has any weak albums, her latter outputs especially are my favorites honestly.
The last eras did not "flop" because of the quality of the albums or songs but i think it was the change of music scene, marketing issues and her image not evolving.
I love most of her videos and visuals but i think at some point it was a bit of an overkill (e.g. Hey Hey Hey)
