Never forget how Katy's albums were half hits and half filler (almost precisely, LOL) until...well, Witness. To that end:

1. Smile (I am so upset about the performance when this was the only album of hers that I would consider completely filler-free. Lean and light, but as perfect as a Katy Perry album can get.)
2. Witness (The songs on this that I love are ones I love so much that I think this album gets the shaft consistently. Also, it has Roulette, which is probably Top 3 Katy songs for me. I also liked that she branched out a bit and worked with Purity Ring. The production on this one was more interesting than her other albums.)
3. Prism (While she pretty much loses me after Dark Horse, the other songs are cute, at least and those first 6 songs are beastly.)
4. Teenage Dream (Continues to be overrated. I LOVE The One That Got Away, E.T., and Teenage Dream though. At one point, I also LOVED Firework and still do because of the nostalgia and how much fun I was having at that point in my life.)
5. One Of The Boys (nah.)

Can't believe TD era is now a teenager lol, so ICONIC and NOSTALIGIC.

It was like yesterday when I discovered Billboard's Hot 100 and saw California Gurls at #1 (06/26/10), and at that time I didn't even know about the site, I followed through some YouTube countdown videos and was impatiently waiting to see who would be in the top 10 and at #1. Ahhh memories, now I know who will be at #1 5 days before the official list.
Katy ruled the early 10s and I'm glad I was there to watch it.

Hopefully she can regain some engagement before dropping anything music related.

Also, in light of her ex-husband's scandal, an old quote of hers from after their divorce has resurfaced, in which she basically came out and said he was no good, she has receipts, but she is keeping them for a rainy day. I guess it's pouring now.

I actually think that it that quote she was talking about substance abuse, but who knows. That said, she does not need to adress this considering how she suffered from it, but I wouldn't be surprised if he also mentally abused her. He is 10 years older than her.

About the catalog thing, will this have any influence at all? This is no TS situation as she is selling it plus it looks like she's friends with the CEO of the company that buys it.

If she’s selling her catalog, I wonder if her contract is up at Capitol? It would be nice if she switched labels because Capitol has really mismanaged her the past many years. But knowing Katy, I wouldn’t be surprised if she would resign with them. Or who knows, maybe she hasn’t fulfilled her contractual obligations yet?

She's the youngest artist that's done this, at least from what I've seen. Usually the veteran artists in their 60's and 70's have been selling their catalogs.

Dumb question time: is there a reason so many artists are selling their catalogues? I feel like I have been reading about it a lot lately and I don't really know why they are doing it. Obviously, the money part is probably a large part of it but I wonder if there are other reasons.

This may not be the absolute correct answer, but my understanding of what this means can be compared to winning the lottery. Either you take the lump sum up front, or take the payments in annuity over the course of a certain amount of years.

In music, this basically means that when you sell your catalogue, you lose the rights to any future income that music will generate for a large sum of money in return. Not selling means you rely on residual sales/usage over the course of your career, which can be unstable. Katy probably makes a couple million a year from streams since she has a ton of hits. She and the other artists before her are guaranteeing themselves a paycheck by doing this. When you're this rich, it really doesn't matter, but helps secure wealth for her family for decades to come.

I was actually thinking of the lottery metaphor earlier, and you're right. She has 225M now. How long would it take otherwise to make that much off streaming and sales? Probably longer than she's willing to wait. Now she can invest that 225M in other things and make even more money. Her streams aren't going to take a hit, but her exposure might increase. They need to make that money back, and I'm sure they aren't willing to wait 50 years to get it. Her grandchildren are millionaires already and they aren't even born yet.

who knows, with the increased exposure of her music we're most certainly going to get, maybe something will go viral enough to re-chart, or chart for the very first time. Win-win for Katy.

and then that will set her up for her next album, which will be all hers.

When winning the lottery lump sum is the best move in every case. Money now is worth more than money later, same goes for Katy here. Selling your masters has just been stigmatized due to the Taylor Swift controversy but it’s not a bad thing at all.

Harleys was yesterday her 4th most streamed song, only behind DH, LFN and TOTGA, it goes viral periodically hahahaha.
On another note, I will always loathe whoever decided to drop Small Talk and not this after NRO. Smile has to be her most mismanaged era (and with witness the competition is strong)
