Their self titled debut album was released on June 21, 1994 on Interscope Records. The group was formed by Teddy Riley with Chauncey Hannibal after the dissolution of Teddy Riley's former group Guy. The other members of Blackstreet - Joseph Stonestreet and Levi Little - were session singers alongside Hannibal on Bobby Brown's third album Bobby, an album that was mostly produced by Riley. They recorded one song for the soundtrack of the Chris Rock film CB4 called "Baby Be Mine". Before they could record an album, Stonestreet left the group and was replaced by former Force One Network singer Dave Hollister. When they re-recorded "Baby Be Mine" for their self-titled debut, Hollister's vocals were added on the album version of the song.
The album peaked at #52 on the Billboard 200 chart and #7 on Top R&B/Hip Hop Albums chart. By April 1995, it was certified platinum in sales by the RIAA, after sales exceeding 1,000,000 copies in the United States.
Of all their albums, this one gets the most plays for me. I love every track from start to finish! Another Level was good too, but this one is by far my favorite from them! What are your fave tracks from this album?
"Baby Be Mine" (#22 Dance)
"Booti Call" (#34 Hot 100, #3 Dance, #14 R&B, #19 Rhythmic Top 40)
"Before I Let You Go" (#7 Hot 100, #2 R&B, #2 Rhythmic)
"U Blow My Mind" (#39 UK)
"Joy" (#43 Hot 100, #12 R&B, #23 Rhythmic)
"Tonight's The Night" (#80 Hot 100, #27 R&B, #12 Dance)
