Mixed reception and album having less commercial appeal really hurt Kendrick. 286K is clearly worse than expected I agree that it had less commercial appeal and that did hamper Kendrick's sales (though since it intentionally had less commercial appeal, I doubt he cares that much if at all) but where's the mixed reception the album has?

Still not a bad week for Kendrick, but it’s no DAMN. by comparison.

The numbers are underwhelming and the album is dropping like a rock everywhere. It went below HITS projections multiple times and basically below everyone’s personal projections. Maybe you could’ve framed this to be good if it was being stable but it’s not even doing that.
He performed at the Super Bowl, had huge anticipation from being away, and is doing less than J. Cole and Lil Uzi Vert.
I have a feeling he won’t take another 5 year gap between studio albums though.

I'm talking about the reception of the actual listeners, not critics. Many people saying it's mid, which can be seen in the numbers: It's a combination of mixed reception and not as commercial. Those two can also go hand in hand: people who want commercial "bangers" didn't get them which is why they think it's mid.

I might love the album but I can see why people wouldn't take towards it.

Art not charts with this. Kendrick might, in fact, be a front runner for AOTY for the grammys.
the new album has little replay value but is still good as a body of work.
