For the third consecutive week, the bar for the biggest opening this year has been raised. Kendrick Lamar’s first new album since 2017’s DAMN. is a lock for #1 on next week’s HITS Top 50. The digital-only set, Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers, is currently projected to reach nearly 400m U.S. streams in its first week. At Spotify global, the album collected over 90m in day one. Kendrick Lamar (pgLang/TDE/Aftermath/Interscope) 325-350k Florence & The Machine (Republic) 40-50k hitsdailydouble.com/news&id=331478&title=NEW-RELEASES%253A-KING-KENDRICK-RETURNS-

Wow. This is the biggest opening of the year, right? I remember DAMN. took home #1 album of 2017, and it debuted in the 600k range. Definitely one of the top rap stars right now with no decline in sight… Curious to see where the songs land on the Hot 100 this upcoming week.

To be fair, 325-350k would be a pretty steep decline, considering how much DAMN opened with. Hoping the numbers at least increase to at least 400k. Still really good numbers compared to most other acts, though.

^More than half of DAMN's first week SPS came from pure sales. If he can match or better the first week streams for it with this new album that'd be pretty good in this day and age.

Kendrick below Taylor, Adele and Drake makes sense tbh. Good numbers.

Also remember that he had massive hit with "Humble" last time around. 325K with no hit single and very little promo is impressive

Not great but still decent numbers for Florence considering they haven’t had a hit forever, this album has more hype then the last so hoping something can catch on in the next year to give this project a bit of longevity.

Jack Harlow already at 50k, keeping in mind it is basically a mini album in today's world of super deluxes and triple albums.

Benito’s second week will be much bigger than Jack’s first. And people on here really believed Jack would beat him first week…

Kendrick with 3 albums in the Top 15. Interesting that his most acclaimed album isn't one of them.

^The music industry has changed so much in the last five years. But a changing music industry can only explain the numbers so much. The numbers are mysteriously much lower than expected, especially for probably the most respected rapper out there now; it seems that it would've been an automatic slam dunk. But this could also mean that it might just take time for people to get into it more and longevity might be its strong point. I also want to keep things in perspective. He had no physicals this week correct? Did DAMN have physicals its first week? How many more units could Mr. Morale have expected to move if physicals were available?

^No physicals. Rappers don't care about physicals. DAMN had physicals. And merchandise bundles which are gone under new Billboard rules. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Damn_(Kendrick_Lamar_album)In the United States, Dam.n debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 with 603,000 album-equivalent units in its first week of release, becoming his third consecutive album after To Pimp a Butterfly (2015) and Untitled Unmastered (2016) to reach the nation's summit. It sold 353,000 copies in its first week and accumulated over 340 million streams.[68] In its second week, the album remained at the top of the US charts with 238,000 album-equivalent units of which 87,000 were traditional album sales, bringing the sales to a total of 841,000 units.[69] In its third week, the album continued to top the charts with 173,000 album-equivalent units of which 57,000 were traditional album sales, bringing the sales to a total of 1.014 million units.[70] As of April 2018, Damn had sold 1,002,000 copies and earned 3,137,000 album-equivalent units in the US.[71] Dam.n is currently under-certified at 3xP.

Kendrick Lamar BOMBING in the first week.
💀💀💀
Still, a #1 is a #1. Hopefully the album has longevity.

Mixed reception and album having less commercial appeal really hurt Kendrick. 286K is clearly worse than expected
