26. Blue Side of the Sky
Standout lyric: “Tail-bound, Oceanside, don't care where I'll go” Album: Purple Hearts Soundtrack (2022)
The songs from this film do such a great job with building up from simple production to more complex, dynamic beats as they go along. The “sky-y-y-y-y” part of the chorus is still a little annoying to me, but it doesn’t completely ruin the song. Lyrically, the song talks about longing for better days when you are feeling down. It’s the most simplistic of any of the original songs on this soundtrack, and I would also say my least favorite. It has potential, but it feels kind of not fully developed.

20. I Hate the Way
Standout lyric: “Look at what you've created, something borderline sacred / I call it overrated, go on and call me jaded” Album: Purple Hearts Soundtrack (2022)
One of the things I love about the music from this movie is that it avoids the trap that a lot of soundtracks fall into, where you need the context of the film to be able to fully appreciate the song. Even though this song is very specific to Cassie’s situation of disliking the fake marriage she has entered, it can also be interpreted as being conflicted about your feelings for a person, which still makes it enjoyable to listen to outside of the context of the movie. Sofia’s powerful vocals vividly express the frustration she is feeling, and coupled with the production, it’s an excellent sounding pop-rock jam.

BONUS: Feel It Still
I really like the funky guitar production and the slow buildup on this cover. Sofia’s voice sounds excellent on this, and I like the change-up in tone from the original. I’d recommend listening to this.

BONUS: Sweet Caroline
This works so well as a rock cover! Sofia’s voice sounds amazing on this. The build-up between the verses of the chorus sound awesome, and the background vocals in the chorus accentuate Sofia’s voice well. This is my favorite of the two covers from this film. I would highly recommend checking this out. With that being said, thanks for tuning into these reviews these past few days, and I can't wait to see what direction Sofia goes in next.

24. Applause
Album: Non-album single (2022) Standout lyric: You’re a supernova superstar
Not gonna lie, despite this coming out in November, I had no idea she’d released anything new until earlier today lol. This is a smooth little power ballad, and I really like the flow of her vocals. However, the lyrics and production are quite simplistic to the point of not being memorable. I would argue Lady Gaga’s “Hold My Hand” is more in the vein of the type of 80s-inspired power ballad I would have liked to see from Sofia. I liked the self-love message of the song and Sofia delivered it quite well, but the production was pretty unremarkable. I don’t think this is something I’d return to again, but it’s a cute little ballad.

28. I Hope You Know
Album: Non-album single (2024) Standout lyric: None
It's been two years since Sofia has released a song not for a soundtrack. For such a long wait, I honestly can't say I am that impressed with this song. It's a ballad, and the lyrics speak about laying beside someone in bed, hoping that they know how much you adore them. This is pretty generic, and her vocals felt a little rougher than usual here. While Sofia has a beautiful voice and I can absolutely see the appeal of her ballads, I've never really enjoyed them and have always much preferred her more upbeat/dance stuff. This is by no means a bad song, just rather boring for the stagnant production and generic lyrics.

29. Joke’s on Me
Standout lyric: "Did you know that you were full of shiny tricks? Promises never kept, illusionist" Album: Non-album single (2024)
This is another ballad in the same vein as “I Hope You Know” from last month, which leads me to assume her entire second album will consist of this same slower sound, considering both singles were now ballads. The lyrics here are a step up from her last single, although they are still a bit generic. In the song, Sofia laments feeling tricked by a person whom she was in love with, and attempts to process her feelings of betrayal towards this person. The ballad is definitely pretty and Sofia delivers excellent vocals here, although I wasn’t particularly wowed by the production. That said, the production fits the timeless, elegant ballad feel that Sofia was going for here quite well. Ballads like this can be a bit of a hard sell for me, but I know Sofia really loves songs like this, so more power to her even if songs like this aren’t really something I’d return to. <3
