It's really refreshing to see an apology as genuine as this.
Now I just wish everybody is holding their white favs up to the same standard.

I agree, it came across very genuine while also to the point. Good on her. I knew it wasnโt intentional so I didnโt lose any respect for her during this whole thing, but her handling of it has made me gain respect for her. While the video is still up on TikTok, the audio is no longer usable

Nice and classy apology. Now they need to change it on Spotify. I also agree that it sounds better with the lyric change.

This was the first Iโve heard of that word being a slur and now I know. Itโs a learnable moment for sure, and Iโm sure for many people including Lizzo. Good for her and good on those who help those not in the know be in the know. Not good to those who instantly jump into โcancel herโ mode over it as if everyone should have already known. We all use words with negative stories that we donโt always know about for an array of reasons and a simple explanation is sometimes all thatโs needed.

It means a lot that she did that. I sure do appreciate people listening & learning.
PS: Kanye got slammed as well when he used the word in โFourFiveSecondsโ and it got some media attention so Iโm surprised that not a lot of people remember that.

I donโt remember that at all, and I was a sophomore in one of the most liberal college towns in America stanning Rihanna the hardest I had in my life at that point.

I donโt remember that at all, and I was a sophomore in one of the most liberal college towns in America stanning Rihanna the hardest I had in my life at that point. when I Googled it the only thing that came up on the first page related to this was from Mirror.co.uk, where they also cite The Sun, about the CEO of a UK disability charity giving an interview saying how offensive it is. the rest of the results look more like this, which really demonstrates how a majority of the US did not/does not perceive this word as a slur. the XXL mag article (top one below) and the Mirror.co.uk article were published exactly 4 months apart. there's even this one from less than a year ago :

as an actual disabled person (altho not the exact kind lizzo initially referred to), y'all are way too quick to dismiss that word as non offensive. not saying it's a black n white scenario bc she obv don't mean anything by it n it's a bit of a deep cut as far as slurs go, but that latter fact is largely because disabled people still get such little respect. like we've been saying able bodied people shouldn't be saying the words cripple or crippled for years now and i still hear people drop them all the time. anyways's lizzo a queen for changing it, one of the few mainstream artists i can actually see doing that <3
this song is uh. something. queen of straddling the line between fun and embarassing tbh
