I know everyone would call this era of Drake a flop but this is a surprise release. There are songs here that can be singles with long lasting push like Jimmy Cooks, Massive and Sticky. CLB didn’t have huge standout songs. DawnFM didn’t either even though that album was way better.

Ironically, the song that he is trying to recreate with 21 Savage on his new project. Now, are you going to post the names of the 6x platinum songs that have never charted that you brought up months ago or nah? Nevertheless, why is the 21 Savage song performing so much better when it is straight rapping and no hook? Possibly, other more creative artists are propping up Drake and not the reverse?

Yes, Drake has never made any song successful in his career, every artist who has been featured on a Drake song is solely responsible for the success of that song and his addition to songs as a featured artist adds nothing in terms of making the song successful. This should do upwards of 200k first week off the strength of AM streams but I'll be shocked if it has any real longevity after that. Most Drake fans didn't ask for this and they don't care for it.

I'm not at all mad at it's performance. If Drake wanted to "play it safe," he'd have called it a mixtape. I like that he's marketing it as an album knowing fully well that it won't perform anywhere close to his albums have historically and it gives me hope that he'll try more things on his albums moving forward without caring about the commercial consequences. It's one thing to try and not quite stick the landing but it's another thing to not try at all.

Anyone who wants to see this as a flop totally can because I guess there is some validity to that. Personally, I'm just glad it's an album I can see myself listening to for a really long time.

I wonder how the album would’ve done if he just did a More Life 2 instead, and i mean with the mix of rap, r&b and house elements throughout. That way there’s a little bit of Drake for everyone. Tracks like Passionfruit and Get It Together could be randomly thrown on Honestly, Nevermind and it wouldn’t feel out of place at all. It’s still a good album, but it kind of makes me wanna go back to More Life at times and appreciate what that project has done.

I'm honestly quite shocked with the performance of Honestly, Nevermind... I know success is neither guaranteed nor eternal but this decline just seems so abrupt. This album is certainly an improvement on CLB, although one could argue that that is a very low bar, so I do hope Massive gets its moment. It's probably my favourite song of his since Views.

It's interesting that Adele, The Weeknd, Post, Kendrick, and Drake are seeing underperforming eras (at least by their own lofty standards). Certainly none of their careers are "over", and their legacies are cemented, but it may signal a changing of the guard. Maybe Bad Bunny will be to the '20s what Drake was to the '10s? Maybe Doja Cat will get half a dozen or more number ones by 2029? It's time we start seeing the new icons of this decade emerge.

Rihanna's a weird case because she just kinda retired, but Beyonce and Taylor Swift are already past the point of needing radio hits and huge album eras. It's like Madonna in the 2000s: she had "Music", "Hung Up", "4 Minutes" and other hits but by that point she was already a legend and had nothing left to prove. That's where I see Beyonce and Taylor in the 2020s; hits are cool if they have them but they don't need them at this point.

I agree, but I think Rihanna is in the same position. The only difference is that the GP is pleading for new music from her and she will score hits, as always.

As a matter of fact, despite “retirement”, she’s constantly ranks in the top ten most streamed females (daily) on Spotify with only Taylor Swift, Doja Cat, Dua Lipa, Ariana Grande and Billie Eilish consistently above her and they’ve all released several projects this decade thus far. Rihanna is out-streaming Adele as we speak too and she just released. I don’t think there’s a female act alive who can disappear, musically, for so long and still be so in-demand, streaming wise.

That said, we deserve another album from her (which we will be getting) considering she’s only released one in the streaming era. We have yet to see her the extent of her first-week power on Spotify/Apple Music.

It was clear as day to me that Drake was going to underperform. Same thing before The Weeknd dropped Dawn FM. When you’re oversaturated the correct move is to take a hiatus, not drop even more music. Well I hope he takes this loss humbled.
