In this thread, I will be creating a progressive timeline of Billboard's chart records in the rock era, starting with 1955 and using decade-ends as cut off markers. For all research purposes, January 1, 1955 will be the starting point when referencing singles and March 24, 1956 will be used for albums. I understand that Billboard favors the Hot 100's inception as a beginning, but I will present data from Best Sellers In Stores (BS), Most Played By Jockeys (DJ) and Most Played In Juke Boxes (JB) in addition to the Top 100 and Hot 100 data. As we progress to 1969, 1979, 1989 etc., the pre-Hot 100 data will only be side-referenced if it still maintains the overall rock-era chart record. B-sides are tabulated only if they charted separately.

I have to give major thanks to both Joel Whitburn and Hanboo (UKMix) for providing some of the initial data of which I further investigated and corrected accordingly. Below each section is a chart key to help guide you through this crash course. If you feel that there are discrepancies, please feel free to discuss!

Essential Inventory - Mono: January 4, 1960 - March 27, 1961** [25]

**Billboard's first "Catalog" albums chart. Albums over 39 weeks were removed from the Top LP chart and placed into "Essential Inventory" Mono charts. On January 9, 1961, "Essential Inventory" was replaced by sectional categories according to genre/list price etc. and carried albums only over 9 weeks old. This means that Elvis Presley's G.I. Blues became a catalog title despite being #1 the previous week. It would return to the top after the restrictions were removed on April 4, 1961. Well, Elvis had an impressive record throughout his lifetime, and even his posthumous records. In total, as of 2022, he had over 109 chart entries on the Hot 100 starting in 1958. If Billboard tracked his entire career, before the inception of the Hot 100 in August of 1958, he would have over 150 chart entries! That's amazing!

The 1980's marked the end of the rock era's "golden age," as many artists from the 50's and 60's would record their final/most recent charting hits. This was also the age when the vinyl single and album where phased out in favor of cassette tapes and CDs. July 11, 1987 marked a significant change to the Billboard Hot 100 as it "begins including sales of the new cassette singles and cassette maxi-singles in compiling the Hot 100 and Hot Black Singles charts." Soon enough, record labels forced consumers to adapt to the cassette single by no longer offering a vinyl equivalent, something that would become evident by 1989 when the cassette led all formats in singles sales. The cassette single would eventually reach its peak in total shipments in 1990, with 10.1% of all units shipped.

The Hot 100 panel also expanded to include rhythm-crossover and rock-crossover stations on September 9, 1989, both of which also compromise the Top 40 Dance/Crossover and Top 40 Rock/Crossover charts of the day.

This decade is all about changes. First thing is first, Billboard began working alongside of Nielsen in the 90's to produce more accurate charts based on POS (point of sales) and audience impressions. Essentially, the working guinea pig of this process was Hot Country Songs in 1990, and over a short time, more charts would convert to the new system. When it comes to pop charts, the first to be introduced was the Top 40 Radio Monitor on December 8, 1990. The panel would be equivalent to today's Mainstream Top 40/Pop Songs/Pop Airplay and it would be published along with the old Hot 100 Airplay and Sales charts until June 8, 1991. It is on that date that the old system disappeared forever, as the Top 40 Radio Monitor was now the de facto Hot 100 Airplay. The Hot 100 itself, however, still ran on the old methods of surveying retailers and disc jockeys until November 30, 1991.

The 90's are also the decade that witnessed not only the fall of the vinyl single, but the single as a marketing format. This is the era that properly gave birth to the "airplay-only" titles, as record labels eagerly pushed the format aside to minimize cannibalization of album sales. This would become problematic for Billboard as many titles were restricted from charting on the Hot 100. Ultimately, Billboard would change the Hot 100 from a singles chart to songs chart by lifting restrictions on December 5, 1998. By doing so, this dramatically altered the chart but it made it much more relevant and accurate. From 1997-2003, the CD single would lead the way for all singles sales despite a decline market entering a new millennium.

On May 25, 1991, Billboard introduced a new and improved methodology to track the nation's top album: point of sales. Prior to this, the Billboard 200 had been compiled through retailer reports, which gave a perspective on shipments but never solid piece-by-piece sales. With the new system now in play, Billboard elected to create a Catalog Albums chart for titles that were 2+ years old and had been absent from the chart for 3 consecutive months. This rule allowed newer titles to spring up in an otherwise crowded bottom half of the chart. Beginning on January 18, 1997, the criteria to determine "catalog" status was changed to an album that is 2+ years old and has fallen below #100, therefore titles like Metallica's Metallica and Nirvana's Nevermind had finally met their fate... until 2009 that is.

Billboard brings the Hot 100 into the 21st century in 2005 with the addition of downloaded songs from services such as Apple Music, Liquid Audio, MusicNet, RealAudio and Roxio. The first download chart premiered on July 12, 2003, and it is called Hot Digital Tracks. The chart featured the top downloaded songs, but does not merge various remixes into one listing. That first week saw Beyoncé's "Crazy In Love" at #1 with only 1,500 digital copies sold, and also paired her up with Cyndi Lauper (Time After Time) in that week's top 10 tracks. The first (published) Digital Songs chart followed on January 22, 2005, and would be incorporated into the Hot 100 on February 12, 2005. A little over 2 years later in 2007, Billboard adds streaming data from platforms such as Yahoo and AOL, ultimately updating the methodology for a new millennium.

During the 2000's, Billboard introduced the Top Comprehensive Albums chart, revealing the top 200 best-selling albums regardless of age. This chart was exclusive to subscribers and was never treated as the official album chart, despite being the real deal. Catalog rules on the Billboard 200 still dictated the removal of titles 2 years or older and under #100 until January 18, 2008; the 2 years was then shortened to 18 months for removal. After Michael Jackson's passing in July 2009, his Number Ones album from 2003 managed to become the top seller of 6 weeks, but due to catalog restrictions it did not enter Billboard 200. A similar situation occurred in September 2009 when the Beatle remasters invaded... the Comprehensive Albums, that is. They sent 18 titles onto that chart, and yet all but two factored into the Billboard 200. On December 5, 2009, those catalog restrictions were finally lifted and the Billboard 200 would encompass all titles.

The charts are updated in the 2010's as Youtube streams are incorporated into the Hot 100 starting in 2013. Catalog restrictions were eased following Whitney Houston's passing, allowing for older titles to re-enter with strength to reach the top 50; holiday titles are also allowed to re-enter annually within the same guidelines. On the other hand, however, a new recurrent rule was added alongside of the existing 20/50 rule. The 52/25 rule (implemented December 5, 2015) removes titles over a year old if they rank below #25, and helps maintains a fresh Hot 100. You may notice that in this era, most newer titles appear within launch date of the parent album, thanks to streaming which is now the main mode of consumption since 2016. Digital sales have slipped considerably within the last few years and are now considered irrelevant in determining popularity.

The Billboard 200 underwent a radical transformation on December 13, 2014, one that witnessed the addition of streams and digital song downloads along with traditional album sales. The old Billboard 200 continued forward as Top Album Sales and will be discussed as through "alternative" point of view in the next post. The 2010's and beyond have seen and beyond have seen catalog titles rising back onto the charts, and they've seen a market that has shrunk considerably within the past decade. Data from the Comprehensive chart will continue to be notated when applicable.

Starting on December 13, 2014, the Billboard 200 incorporated streaming data into the chart. As a result, the sales-only version continued on as Top Album Sales ever since. This post will tie together the data from pre-stream Billboard 200 with that of Top Album Sales, and it will offer an alternative view of history. You might notice statistical differences in the numbers, especially with older artists who continue to sell albums the old-fashioned way. Newer acts may see their numbers shrink since their popular relies more on streaming than sales.
