There's something very 40's/50's-ish about this song. It feels jazzy and with a bit of a noir-ish vibe. I think this one is going to have a long shelf life in movies and TV shows.

What kinda lead single is this? Talk about sending the wrong player to bat for the team. This hould have stayed in the dug out.

Yeah. All snark aside, it's just another word for a disco ball. Maybe it's a more common term for it in the UK? I have no idea on that one, but it's possible.

It predates "disco ball" as a term. These were common in nightclubs well before disco was a thing.

I have a feeling that this is the “Roman Candles” and we’re going to get the ACTUAL lead single in September. I think Domino would be pushing this a hell of a lot harder if they wanted this to be a radio hit.

I'm a sad man so this melodic lounge stuff is up my alley. Hoping it does something, it's a bit non-radio friendly but so is stuff like Part of the Band with it's more mellow chamber pop production. Looks like they're continuing down the Tranquility Base and Casino route, I'm all for it.

I hadn't been a follower until their '13 - '14 US big-breakthrough, and then I went back and discovered/rediscovered I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor, Crying Lightning, and Don't Sit Down Cause I've Moved Your Chair. I just-barely liked Four Out Of Five, and the rest of Tranquility Base was just interminably awful; I listened 3x trying to give it a chance. This is just as bad as the rest of that album; and I'll take that 1975 song over this for sure.

Tranquility Base was one of the biggest pieces of crap I have ever heard from a band that's supposed to be "good". Goddamn I hated every second of that hookless, seemingly intentionally boring drivel. This track is seemingly a defiant middle finger for people who want them to get back to rocking, but it's at least more interesting than anything from Tranquility Base? The strings are nice at least.

More food for thought, the BBC has been posting Arctic Monkeys performances and both "505" and "R U Mine?" got noticeably slowed down, to the point where the crowd is out of sync with Alex and it's apparent that Jamie Helder (guitarist) and Matt Helders (drummer) are not on the same page.
I think Alex is just super determined to change Arctic Monkeys' sound, and I think this dashes hopes of there being a few up-tempo cuts on The Car.

Arctic Monkeys have been trying to pull off something fellow Sheffield band Pulp did with their followups to their breakthrough album. This is Hardcore and We Love Life felt like stylistic 180s from the sound of Different Class. It's not an exact comparison because Pulp waited over a decade before they started having hits in the UK and AM were big straight away there. But Pulp are very influential on pretty much every Sheffield band that came after them, including AM, and you can listen to even the singles from those two Pulp albums and get a good idea of the sound AM has been trying for over the past few years.

How the fuck is this the same band who came out with AM.
They literally said this was going to sound different from TBH+C, this sounds like a fucking B-side from that album. This is just shit.

Damn. This one seems to be getting no play from many commercial stations I know. No KROQ spin. No KBZT spin. No WKQX. I was expecting to at least see 93XRT in Chicago to play it once since they play a lot of indie stuff and are pretty varied for an Audacy station. Or KKXT from NPR. Or 98.7, KRXP or Channel 933 in Colorado. But nope, only half of them just probably said "hey they dropped something new" then played Do I Wanna Know again, KRXP went off playing R U Mine, Why'd You Only Call Me When Your High, I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor and Flouresecent Adolesecent though today. All those songs played are good songs, but I really hate seeing radio do this, especially with such a big artist which you'd expect they'd at least debut. Quality on the song or not, it's bad for the business to not give it a few plays with your local audience to see what they feel about it, then if it's negative, you can stop playing it as a current. So far I only know The Current in Minneapolis and XTRA in SD are making it currents. I know I shouldn't be surprised considering where we are nowadays, but I still am. It sucks in the 80's, prime stations would be more risk taking with new wave songs or grunge and punk artists in the 90's blowing up with huge success getting plays, but then with new music today that's good or could be with an audience, it's silence if it's not friendly enough for commercial radio. So much good music out there, would be cool to see another music influence from alt one day like in the 80s-90s. Sigh

It's just getting the FYC treatment on Alt. Domino expects this song to do nothing. And honestly, Alt tried the new lounge-y sound of Arctic Monkeys already, "Four Out Of Five". It got BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAD data. Like, REALLY REALLY bad. Like the general reaction radio got was "WTF is this sh*t?!" They're not going to go through all of that again when it's basically more of the same (even if it's "better"). AM got their shot with their new sound and it flopped like a fish in a desert. They're not going to get that again; not unless they drop something that is more vintage AM, or at the absolute least is more commercial even if it's still different.

I didn't follow the data for Four Out of Five back then as I wasn't listening to alt as much in 2018. Learning this is pretty fun though thanks for the history listen. Hope I'm not too annoying complaining haha. Just love seeing something new happen on the radio more.

Having listened to this... it's not bad, but I concur that it's definitely not radio material. I liked "Four Out Of Five" a little more honestly.
Funny because my first thought upon seeing the title would be that they might be returning to the "I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor" sound.

Look, Domino isn't even putting this on Triple A. It's just getting the FYC treatment on Alt. Domino expects this song to do nothing. To be fair this isn't a fair example as Domino hasn't sent much of their stuff to AAA either. Maybe they serviced it via PlayMPE but I'm not sure if that site still updates. Not even "Chaise Longue", to my memory. As another example, Alex G and Superorganism both received noncomm airplay without an impact or servicing there and those are more radio-friendly than this song. Whether this is the radio single for AAA we'll find out next week but if they don't send anything after this, I could see this at worst to be like that Nine Inch Nails album from 2018 and skip radio altogether. As Roman Candles wasn't even added by most of even non-comm panel. Also interesting that Alt Nation is playing this.
