Top 3 on Alternative: 4 3 PARAMORE This Is Why 1960 1724 236 2.647 This is now the highest peak of their carreer on alternative radio, tied with Misery Business which also reached #3 It will almost certainly outpeak it. Blink can't be at the top forever, and Beach Weather, while still rising, has already had a turn at #1. Both Blink and Beach Weather are crossing to pop radio though, so that might affect how long they hang around. Alternative likes to hold onto pop crossovers forever. Though "This Is Why" is likely going to cross to pop too, which would offset things a bit I think, ahaha. Honestly Alt needs more crossovers onto pop. Rosa Linn crossed but that's really more of a AAA song that crossed to both pop and Alt. Blink, Beach Weather, and Paramore crossing would be a nice shot in the arm for the format. If "Mary on a Cross" can get going on pop that would be helpful too.

This is probably one of the most retro sounding tracks they've ever recorded. Not sure what's modern pop about it. And even so, pop and rock have been bedfellows since the dawn of the genre. Nothing more boring than a genre purist. based and true I always hated seeing a lot of people be so annoying when indie pop gets played on alternative and they’re like “NOOO I MISS REAL ALTERNATIVE ROCK IN THE 80’S AND 90’S” as if Power Pop, Trip Hop, Breakbeat and Art Pop/Sophistipop weren’t being played on alternative radio across the country back then.

yeah while i think the "wtf alternative" reactions are warranted in terms of like. mood and without you going top 10 here, this not only makes perfect sense for the format, it's probably the *least* pop single they've released since ,,,, idk, now ?
(side note: i SO do not miss the days of g*een b*ron complaining abt this sort of thing on every other thread and the majority of the rock board backing him up, not that i wasn't guilty of that as well)

Pop music has always been on Alt, even at the inception at the format. I think the frustration comes from two factors: 1. Pop music has always been a secondary element on Alt. A spice. In the late-10's there was an attempt to force the format to go full-blown pop, and this tidal wave of left-field pop (or just straight up pop) clashed violently with songs and artists that had scored hits even just a couple of years earlier like Foals, The Revivalists, and Nothing But Thieves. The core of Alternative is indie rock with alternative rock as a strong second. The attempt to abandon that core to become a sub-format of pop nearly destroyed Alt. 2. In a lot of cases, the pop music that Alt played in the 80's and 90's didn't stick around outside of retro blocks. For example, "Virtual Insanity" is a beloved pop song by many, but it didn't peak high and it was forgotten for a long period of time before it got rediscovered again recently. Most of what sticks around on Alt gold lists are indie rock and alternative rock songs, the pop songs genuinely do not unless it was an indie or alt-rock song that crossed to pop. Of the pop fare, sometimes "Hey Ya!" by Outkast and "Lose Yourself" by Eminem get spun as a change-of-pace, and that's being generous. Alternative will always be a rock-leaning format due to how ensconced its core is, and because Alt's gold tracks tend to be rockers, it leads to the perception that Alt is a "rock" format instead of being "rock-leaning". Anyway, "This Is Why" is basically a post-punk song performed by Paramore, it fits the format, the end.

Very happy to see it hit top 10 on AAA, their new album is gonna kill me if The News and this are any indication of the full project.

As this is #2 on alt right now, the only holdout (unless a station or two got removed) is WBUZ. It should be noted that the only female related songs in their top 50 right now are Death by Rock and Roll, The Loneliest, Paranoid and Scared Together. So they literally are not playing a single current with a female vocalist providing vocals in the song. That being said, they currently do not have blink, ATL or Weezer at max rotation, at least.

What’s weird is that their hometown is near nashville I am completely mystified as to why WBUZ is snubbing this tbh. Not just because Paramore is local but it’s basically a post-punk song, something WBUZ is no stranger to. I’ve noticed that WBUZ has tilted heavier than they did in 2019-21 though. But so has KPNT and they’re playing “This Is Why” on heavy. So who knows?

With Fueled By Ramen having two artists vying to be the next #1 on Alternative, it looks like FBR is prioritizing getting Paramore their first #1 and keeping All Time Low waiting in the wings for another week or two.
2 2 PARAMORE This Is Why 2572 2432 140 3.348

My understanding is that they’ve always had a foot in both labels, though. And they are both under the Warner umbrella.

Wow, I didn't realize Paramore had never been to #1 on alt before. Not even during the Riot! and Paramore eras? Crazy.
Also wild that this is happening after their last album basically did zilch on alt. Or any radio format for that matter.

basically did zilch on alt Well, they straggled out two Top 40/sub-Top 10 hits ... the album before that album only managed one Top 40 hit ("Now"), and the subsequent Pop hits "Ain't It Fun" and "Still Into You" were lucky to get a smattering of Alt airplay after "Now" quickly withered.

Really? I though Hard Times managed top 30 and nothing else charted.

Well, I know a lot of people on this Board follow Billboard exclusively, but I'm basing it on the only chart I follow exclusively, Mediabase: 02/09/13 13 11 Now 04/22/17 12 18 Hard Times 09/16/17 28 12 Fake Happy
