( source) A year and two months have passed since the beginning of my original gauntlet of jazz rankdowns. And let me tell you, my life definitely hasn't gotten any simpler since then, for reasons mostly out of my control. But music, and particularly discussing it on the Internet, is my biggest love, so it'll take much worse conditions to stop me from hosting personal rankdowns. That, or me running out of ideas--which will almost certainly come first, but hopefully that doesn't happen soon either. Nearly all of these songs are the same ones I had in mind for this 2nd series back when I created the mega-playlist long ago. But you know I can never leave well enough alone, so I have been tirelessly editing all 3 lists over the past couple days. I am sure it will make for a better standard of experience for you potential participants! Like before, this series will consist of 3 mini-rankdowns of 15 songs each. However, unlike before where I wanted the combined deadlines to add up to about the length of one of my normal rankdowns, now I feel neither the rush nor the comfortability to go for 17-19 day deadlines. Instead, I'm going to give each part a submission period of 24 days--starting with Part 1's deadline of October 9. Acquaint yourself with these songs thoroughly, then PM me your ranking of all of them from favorite (#1) to least favorite (#15). Many of these songs have multiple recordings by the same artist, but the versions in the playlist are the ones I want you to rank--if you have any questions about this, please ask. Please try to send your ballots with the artist names and/or titles typed the same way they are in this opening post, but I do not require you to number the songs. After sending your list, you may make changes to your ranks as long as you do so before the deadline. All announced deadline dates are 11:59PM ET (I REPEAT: EASTERN TIME, BABY. YES, I AM IN THE EASTMOST QUARTER OF THE UNITED STATES AGAIN. PLEASE BE MINDFUL OF THIS CHANGE WHEN PLANNING YOUR SUBMISSION SCHEDULING). Results are determined by adding up each person's ranks for each song; the song with the least points wins.

fun fact: I met Dizzy Gillespie in a Ft Worth hotel in the early/mid 90s after his show…sadly though, I was too poor at the time to afford tickets
also, my answer to the Colbert Questionnaire’s “if you had to choose only 1 song to listen to for the rest of your life…” is in this rankdown

I'm not ashamed to admit that a fair bit of this is going to be discovery, but I can think of far worse ways to pass the time while working then listening to some jazz music, so I'm in on this one.

I’ve listened to various kinds of jazz music. If I only have to rank 15 songs at a time then count me in. The song on this playlist I’m most familiar with is “Skating”.

I'll try and get on this, I've just not had the energy for doing non chart rankdowns lately but these jazz rankings were always nice and fun.

1 week left to submit! Going into the last week with just 4 lists--not a great pace, so I'd love for that to pick up sharply.

After thinking about it for months, I’ve finally decided to start an account on Rate Your Music. This is how I would rate these jazz songs using RYM’s scale.
#1-2: 4.5/5 #3-6: 4/5 #7-13: 3.5/5 #14-15: 3/5

hopefully instrumentals don't get unjustly tanked...i have to admit that i tend to like vocals but i'm going to try to give the instrumentals a fair chance

And when it comes to great jazz music, vocals should not be a requirement.

Scheduling note:As of yesterday, I was planning to reveal today, but that was under the assumption I would have all the lists by Midnight and do all the preparations overnight. Instead, I fell asleep waiting for Willapted's submission (which finally arrived at nearly 3AM my time) and only woke up at 11AM I'm now in a position where revealing today would require me to dedicate my day to preparations nonstop starting this very moment, and I just don't want to do that So, instead I'll pace myself a little slower on the preparations and reveal tomorrow. In the meantime, anyone who didn't send but wants to be tagged as a spectator in reveals can make that request now.

Not really sure what to expect with these results because I feel like my lists have flopped a few times before in the jazz rankdowns, but either way I'm excited! This was a solid list too so in the end I can't really be mad by any sort of outcome.

If you guessed Wayne wrote this song for his kid based on the title, you'd be correct. This reveal is obviously not the only one Hancock will be involved in tonight, but it's also not the last you'll see of Hubbard, Shorter, and Carter. 15

BTW all of these performer credits are based off a mix of reading the album and/or single pages on Wikipedia and RYM (plus a few stray other sources), so if any of them seem inaccurate (nothing jumped out at me but there's likely a couple mistakes idk), it's most likely due to the musician's presence on other songs on the record, but not this specific track.

Holland's not done with this rankdown yet. This mysterious, centrifugal-sounding track also lets us cover the presence of underground icons Rivers and Braxton. My condolences Trilogy 14

I gave you a double dose of bird in this rankdown. Mayhaps I am not even done with the jazz "Birds"? Stay tuned later tonight. I would have loved to watch Roland pull off his "blowing into multiple instruments at once" trick live! He has a knack for playing with the textures of more traditional-feeling tunes to make them sound out-of-this-world. (we're also not done with him in this rankdown either) 13
