The Contenders: Taylor Swift Leads Billboard 200 Race by a Midnight Mile, Trailed by Arctic Monkeys & YoungBoy Never Broke Again New sets from Jeezy & DJ Drama and Carly Rae Jepsen should also be factors in this week's race for the top spot.
By Andrew Unterberger
10/26/2022
Welcome to The Contenders, a midweek column that looks at artists aiming for the top of the Billboard charts, and the strategies behind their efforts. This week, for the upcoming chart dated Nov. 5: Taylor Swift’s Midnights laps the rest of 2022’s full-length releases in its first couple of days, while the Arctic Monkeys aim for their first top five entry on the chart and YoungBoy Never Broke Again plans his sixth (!!) top 20 album of 2022.
Taylor Swift’s ‘Midnights’ Has Already Sold 1 Million Albums in the U.S. (Updating) 10/26/2022 Taylor Swift, Midnights (Republic)
Soon after its Oct. 21 release, Taylor Swift’s Midnights was no longer competing with the rest of the albums released in the past week, or even in the past year — Billboard reported it as the first album of the 2020s to cruise past the 1 million-equivalent album units mark after just three full days. At this point, Swift’s main rival is her own history: The 1.3 million units it had moved as of Monday (Oct. 24) just passed her reputation and its 1.238 million first-week units moved back in Dec. 2017 for the biggest debut of the past half-decade. (After that, she’s getting into Adele territory.)
Swift pulled off this blockbuster bow by finding a happy medium in between the surprise-release strategy of her 2020 Folklore and Evermore sets and her more traditional rollouts of the 2010s. Though the album was announced months in advance (at August’s MTV Video Music Awards), no singles came out before Midnights did; instead, Swift gradually unveiled song titles and themes of the set, building up anticipation for the set while still keeping its actual sound under wraps. Then, when the 13 tracks finally debuted at once at (of course) midnight on Oct. 21, Swift also teased an additional surprise for the true insomniacs among the Swifties — which ended up being the album’s 3am Edition, a deluxe version with seven bonus cuts.
Swift also boosted her first-week numbers the old-fashioned way: by releasing tons of physical products. Midnights has already set the single-week record for vinyl copies sold in the modern era (since Luminate began tracking music sales in 1991) with over 500,000 records — more than most artists can now manufacture, let alone sell. Her sales are also boosted by a standard digital album, an iTunes-exclusive version with a bonus track, four standard CD and vinyl editions (each with a different cover, and different-colored records; the CDs are available in explicit and censored versions), a cassette tape, and even a Target-exclusive “Lavender” edition of the album on CD and colored-vinyl LP, with three bonus tracks on the CD. For good measure, she sold autographed versions of the four explicit CDs and the four vinyl LPs on her web store.
Arctic Monkeys, The Car (Domino)
In a universe without Swift, this week’s Billboard 200 talk might be about whether or not the Arctic Monkeys would finally score their first No. 1. The U.K. indie quartet, superstars in their home country for the better part of two decades, have claimed six straight No. 1s on the U.K. Official Charts without getting higher than No. 6 on the Billboard 200, with 2013’s A.M.. But the group has only grown in stateside popularity since that album’s release, with several tracks from both that set and their older catalog becoming streaming perennials after finding popularity on TikTok.
This week, the band releases its seventh album, The Car, preceded by the dreamy singles “There’d Better Be a Mirrorball” and “Body Paint.” Neither song has found the same streaming success as lusty old hits — “505,” from 2007’s Favourite Worst Nightmare, remains their lone entry on this week’s Rock Streaming Songs chart. But the album has received rave reviews, and the band is preparing for its biggest tour so far, including arena headlining dates in Chicago and Boston, and two nights at New York’s Forest Hills stadium.
YoungBoy Never Broke Again, Ma’ I Got a Family (Atlantic): Another week, another Billboard 200 contender from New Orleans rapper YoungBoy Never Broke Again. After hitting the chart’s top 20 with each of his first five full-length releases this year (including a collaborative set with DaBaby) – most recently with mixtape 3800 Degrees, which debuted at No. 12 just earlier this month – he’s now looking to go six for six with Ma’ I Got a Family. (Given the rapper’s recent decamping from Atlantic to Motown, some insiders have speculated that his particularly prolific release schedule of late has been at least partly motivated by contract fulfillment.)
If the market isn’t too crowded for another YoungBoy album, this one might get a warmer reception on streaming than his previous one. While 3800 Degrees ran just 13 tracks and featured no big-name guest stars, Family boasts 19 tracks and includes marquee features from Nicki Minaj and Yeat. It’s also hosted by DJ Drama in the style of his classic Gangsta Grillz mixtapes – a throwback framework for the 23-year-old MC that also helped propel Tyler, the Creator’s Call Me If You Get Lost set to No. 1 in 2021.
IN THE MIX
Jeezy & DJ Drama, SNOFALL (YJ/Def Jam): Speaking of DJ Drama – he’s had a busy week, also co-headlining the Snofall set with southern rap great and frequent collaborator Jeezy. The 17-track set features appearances by next-generation streaming stars Lil Durk, 42 Dugg and EST Gee.
Carly Rae Jepsen, The Loneliest Time (School Boy/Interscope): It was 10 years ago that Carly Rae Jepsen’s “Call Me Maybe” first swept the U.S., topping the Billboard Hot 100 and introducing a new karaoke standard to the masses. The Canadian singer-songwriter has found more modest crossover success in the years since, but remains a cult favorite among pop fans – a status re-confirmed with her well-received sixth album, The Loneliest Time, and advance singles “Western Wind” and “Beach House.”
Le Sserafim, Antifragile (Source) After making their EP debut in May with Fearless, Korean quintet Le Sserafim returns this October with sophomore EP Antifragile, which arrives with eight different varieties of CD packages box set (including randomized paper-good inserts like photocards and posters). The set’s title track has already made an international impact, debuting at No. 79 on Billlboard’s Global 200 listing this week.

10/26/2022UPDATE (Oct. 26): Taylor Swift’s Midnights is off to a record-breaking start in the U.S. According to initial reports to Luminate, the album, which was released on Oct. 21, has earned more than 1.4 million equivalent album units in the U.S. through its first five days of release (through Oct. 25). Of that sum, traditional album sales comprise more than 1.05 million across all available formats (multiple digital album download, CD, vinyl and cassette variants). Vinyl LP sales for the title have surpassed 515,000. Luminate’s data powers Billboard’s weekly charts. With 1.4 million equivalent album units, Midnights has the largest week for any album since Adele’s 25 debuted with 3.482 million in its first week (chart dated Dec. 12, 2015). And Midnights‘ traditional album sales total of 1.05 million continues to be the biggest sales week for a set since Swift’s own reputation album debuted with 1.216 million copies sold (chart dated Dec. 2, 2017). Plus, the album’s 20 tracks (the standard set’s 13 tracks plus seven tracks added to a deluxe edition) have registered more than 423 million on-demand official streams (audio and video combined) in the U.S. in the album’s first five days. As reported on Oct. 25, Midnights has the largest streaming week for an album in 2022, by total streams for its collected songs. It is also the largest streaming week ever for an album by a non-R&B/hip-hop title, or for any album by a female artist. In its first five days, Midnights has the fifth-most streams in a single week by an album ever. The largest streaming week was registered by the opening frame of Drake’s Scorpion, with 745.92 million (July 14, 2018-dated chart). It’s assumed that Midnights’ total units, sales and streaming figures will increase in the coming days, as the tracking week ends on Thursday, Oct. 27. The set’s final sales number is expected to be announced on Sunday, Oct. 30, along with its expected large debut on the multimetric Billboard 200 albums chart (dated Nov. 4). If Midnights debuts at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, it will mark Swift’s 11th chart-topping effort. The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption as measured in equivalent album units, compiled by Luminate. Units comprise album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). Each units equals one album sale, or 10 individual tracks sold from an album, or 3,750 ad-supported or 1,250 paid/subscription on-demand official audio and video streams generated by songs from an album. For all chart news, follow billboard and billboardcharts on both Twitter and Instagram. PREVIOUSLY (Oct. 25): According to initial reports to Luminate, Midnights has earned more than 1.3 million equivalent album units in the U.S. through its first four days of release (through Oct. 24). Of that sum, traditional album sales comprise more than 1 million across all available formats (multiple digital album download, CD, vinyl and cassette variants). Vinyl LP sales for the title have surpassed 500,000. Biggest Week for Any Album Since Adele’s ‘25’: After four days, Midnights already has the largest overall week, by equivalent album units, for any album, since Adele’s 25 debuted with 3.482 million in its first week (chart dated Dec. 12, 2015). More Than 1 Million Copies Sold: Midnights also has the largest sales week for any album – by traditional album sales – since Swift’s own reputation album debuted with 1.216 million copies sold (chart dated Dec. 2, 2017). Midnights is the 22nd album to sell at least 1 million copies in a single week since Luminate began tracking music sales in 1991. In total, there have been 24 instances – by 22 different albums – where an album sold at least 1 million copies in a week. One of those albums, Adele’s 25, sold over 1 million in three separate weeks. It was earlier reported (Oct. 22) that Midnights has logged the single-largest sales week for a vinyl album in the modern era (since Luminate began tracking music sales in 1991), and is the top-selling album of 2022. It is also the year’s best-selling vinyl album, surpassing the 372,000 copies Harry Styles’ Harry’s House has sold through the week ending Oct. 20. Biggest Streaming Week of 2022: Additionally, in its first four days, the album’s 20 songs have generated more than 357 million on-demand official streams (audio and video combined) in the U.S. The album’s standard initial release had 13 songs, and a deluxe version released three hours later added seven additional songs. That 357 million sum is the largest streaming week for an album in 2022, by total streams for its collected songs. It is also the largest streaming week ever for an album by a non-R&B/hip-hop title, or for any album by a female artist. Previously, 2022’s largest streaming week – and the biggest week for a non-R&B/hip-hop set ever – was logged by the debut frame of Bad Bunny’s Un Verano Sin Ti (356.55 million; chart dated May 21). In terms of albums by female artists, Midnights surpasses the debut week of Ariana Grande’s Thank U, Next (it launched with 307.07 million streams for its collected songs on the chart dated Feb. 23, 2019). PREVIOUSLY (Oct. 24): According to initial reports to Luminate, Midnights has earned more than 1.2 million equivalent album units in the U.S. through its first three days of release (through Oct. 23). Of that sum, traditional album sales comprise more than 955,000 across all available formats (multiple digital album download, CD, vinyl and cassette variants). Vinyl LP sales for the title is nearing 500,000. After three days, Midnights already has the largest overall week, by equivalent album units, for any album, since Swift’s own reputation debuted with 1.238 million in its first week (chart dated Dec. 2, 2017). Midnights also has the largest sales week for any album since reputation’s opening week of 1.216 million sold. It was earlier reported (Oct. 22) that Midnights has logged the single-largest sales week for a vinyl album in the modern era (since Luminate began tracking music sales in 1991). Additionally, in its first three days, the album’s 20 songs have generated over 284 million on-demand official streams (audio and video combined) in the U.S. The album’s standard initial release had 13 songs, and a deluxe version released three hours later added seven additional songs. PREVIOUSLY (Oct. 22): According to initial reports to Luminate, Midnights sold more than 800,000 copies in the U.S. through its first day across all available formats (multiple digital album download, CD, vinyl and cassette variants). It has already logged the largest sales week for any album since 2017, is the top-selling album of 2022 year-to-date, and has set a modern-era record for single-week vinyl album sales. 2022’s Top-Selling Album After One Day: Midnights’ initial sales sum already makes it the biggest-selling album of 2022 year-to-date. Previously, 2022’s top-selling album, year-to-date, was Harry Styles’ Harry’s House, with 620,000 copies sold through the week ending Oct. 13. It’s assumed that Midnights’ sales figure will increase in the coming days, as the tracking week ends on Thursday, Oct. 27. The set’s final sales number is expected to be announced on Sunday, Oct. 30, along with its expected large debut on the multi-metric Billboard 200 albums chart (dated Nov. 4). If Midnights debuts at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, it will mark Swift’s 11th chart-topping effort. News of initial streaming-and-track-equivalent activity for the album, as provided by Luminate, will reported in the coming days. Biggest Sales Week for Any Album Since Swift’s reputation in 2017: With just one day of sales, Midnights logs the largest sales week for any album in the U.S. since Swift’s own reputation debuted with 1.216 million copies sold in its first week (ending Nov. 16, 2017). Reputation was also the last album to sell more than 1 million copies in a single week in the U.S., a feat that has become difficult to achieve in recent years as consumers transition to consuming music through streaming services. (Yearly U.S. album sales decreased in every year from 2012-2020.) Since Luminate began tracking music sales in 1991, there have only been 23 instances – by 21 different albums – where an album sold at least 1 million copies in a single week. One of those albums, Adele’s 25, sold over 1 million in three separate weeks. Modern-Era Vinyl Sales Record: Further, Midnights handily breaks the modern-era record for single-week vinyl album sales in the U.S., with over 400,000 copies sold so far. That’s the largest week for an album on vinyl since Luminate began tracking music sales in 1991. It surpasses the previous high, set earlier this year, when Harry’s House debuted with 182,000 vinyl copies (week ending May 26, 2021). Midnights’ overall initial sales figures include any pre-orders of the album that were fulfilled to the customer through Oct. 21, as well as traditional in-store sales that were generated on the day of release. Midnights arrived after months of pre-release promotion and pre-orders – and its initial sales figure is bolstered by an array of available versions and variants of the album. Midnights is available to purchase in a standard digital album (both clean and explicit), an iTunes-exclusive version with a bonus track (clean and explicit), four standard CD editions (each with a different cover, both clean and explicit), four vinyl LP editions (each with a different cover and colored vinyl) and a cassette tape. Target is also selling an exclusive “Lavender” edition of the album on CD and colored-vinyl LP, with the CD boasting three bonus tracks. In addition, in the weeks leading up to release, Swift’s webstore sold pre-orders of signed copies of the four standard CD albums and the four standard vinyl LPs. Midnights is also available in a deluxe boxed set with a CD edition of the album and a Swift-branded T-shirt, exclusively for Capital One cardholders. Three hours after Midnights arrived, Swift issued a deluxe edition of the album with seven bonus songs (20 tracks total) to streaming services and digital retailers (with the later including a digital liner notes booklet).

Taylor Swift’s ‘Midnights’ Blasts in at No. 1 on Billboard 200 Chart With Biggest Week for an Album in 7 Years Plus: Arctic Monkeys, YoungBoy Never Broke Again and Jeezy & DJ Drama debut in top 10. www.billboard.com/music/chart-beat/taylor-swift-midnights-debut-number-one-billboard-200-albums-chart-1235163377/
By Keith Caulfield
10/30/2022Taylor Swift achieves her 11th No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 chart (dated Nov. 5) as Midnights arrives with the biggest week for any album in nearly seven years. The set launches with 1.578 million equivalent album units earned in the U.S. in the week ending Oct. 27, according to Luminate. The last album to tally a larger week was the debut frame of Adele’s 25, when it bowed with 3.482 million units (Dec. 12, 2015-dated chart). 10/30/2022 Midnights was released on Oct. 21 after being announced two months earlier by Swift at the MTV Video Music Awards (Aug. 28). No music from the album was released until the set dropped on Oct. 21, when she also issued the music video for Midnights’ first single, “Anti-Hero.” Midnights is Swift’s 10th full-length studio album and initially bowed as a 13-track standard release. Three hours after Midnights’ arrival, Swift released a deluxe version of the album (its “3am Edition”) with seven bonus tracks. Swift now ties Barbra Streisand for the most No. 1 albums among women. Swift is also the sixth act with more than 10 No. 1 albums on the Billboard 200 since the chart began regularly publishing on a weekly basis in 1956. She joins The Beatles (who lead with a record 19 No. 1s), Jay-Z (14), Drake, Bruce Springsteen and Streisand (each with 11). Midnights is already the year’s top-selling album by overall sales through the year, and tallies the largest sales week for an album since her own reputation debuted in 2017, the third-largest streaming week ever for an album, and the biggest sales week for a vinyl album in the modern era (since Luminate began tracking music sales in 1991). Also in the top 10 of the new Billboard 200: albums from Arctic Monkeys, YoungBoy Never Broke Again and Jeezy and DJ Drama debut. The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption as measured in equivalent album units, compiled by Luminate. Units comprise album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). Each unit equals one album sale, or 10 individual tracks sold from an album, or 3,750 ad-supported or 1,250 paid/subscription on-demand official audio and video streams generated by songs from an album. The new Nov. 5, 2022-dated chart will be posted in full on Billboard‘s website on Tuesday (Nov. 1). For all chart news, follow billboard and billboardcharts on both Twitter and Instagram. Of Midnights’ 1.578 equivalent album units earned, album sales comprise 1.140 million, SEA units comprise 419,000 (equaling 549.26 million on-demand official streams of the set’s 20 total tracks) and TEA units comprise 19,000. Third-Biggest Streaming Week Ever: Midnights logs the third-largest streaming week ever for an album, by total on-demand official streams. It also captures the biggest streaming week for a non-R&B/hip-hop album and any album by a woman. The Nos. 1 and 2 biggest streaming weeks were logged by the debut frames of Drake’s Scorpion (745.92 million) and Certified Lover Boy (743.67 million), respectively. Previously, Swift’s biggest streaming week for an album was tallied by the first week of Red (Taylor’s Version), with 303.23 million in 2021. 2022’s Top-Selling Album: With 1.140 million sold, Midnights is easily 2022’s top-selling album already. Previously, 2022’s top-seller — adding up all sales generated through the year — was Harry Styles’ Harry’s House, with 633,000 copies sold through Oct. 27. (In terms of total equivalent album units, Bad Bunny’s Un Verano Sin Ti is 2022’s biggest album, with 2.911 million units earned.) Breaking down Midnights’ first-week sales of 1.140 million, physical sales comprise 980,000 (575,000 on vinyl, 395,000 on CD and 10,000 on cassette) and digital album downloads comprise 161,000. Biggest Sales Week Since Swift’s Own reputation: The 1.140 million sales number for Midnights marks the largest sales week for any album since Swift’s own reputation debuted with 1.216 million copies sold (chart dated Dec. 2, 2017). Swift Has Five Albums With Million-Plus Sales Weeks: Midnights is the 22nd album to sell at least 1 million copies in a single week since Luminate began tracking music sales in 1991. In total, there have been 24 instances — by 22 different albums — in which an album sold at least 1 million copies in a week. One of those albums, Adele’s 25, sold more than 1 million in three separate weeks. Swift is the only artist with five different albums to each sell at least 1 million copies in a single week in the Luminate era — Midnights, reputation, 1989, Red, and Speak Now. Further, now with five, Swift remains the only act with at least three different albums that hit the million-sales weekly threshold. Three acts have a pair of albums that each managed a million-plus sales week: Backstreet Boys, Eminem and *NSYNC. New Modern-Era Vinyl Sales Record: Midnights handily breaks the modern-era record for single-week vinyl album sales in the U.S. with 575,000 vinyl LPs sold. That’s the largest week for an album on vinyl since Luminate began tracking music sales in 1991. It surges past the previous high, set earlier this year, when Harry’s House debuted with 182,000 vinyl copies (week ending May 26, 2021). Midnights is also already 2022’s top-seller on vinyl year-to-date. Previously, the year’s top-seller on vinyl was Harry’s House, with 377,000 sold through the year. Midnights’ 395,000 in CD sales is the largest sales week for an album on CD since reputation launched with 507,000 copies sold. Midnights arrived after months of pre-release promotion and pre-orders — and its sales figure is bolstered by an array of available versions and variants of the album. It is available to purchase in a standard digital album (both clean and explicit); a deluxe digital album (clean and explicit, each with seven additional songs); an iTunes-exclusive version with a bonus spoken word track (clean and explicit); four standard CD editions (each with a different cover, both clean and explicit); four vinyl LP editions (each with a different cover and colored vinyl); and a cassette tape. Target is also selling an exclusive “Lavender” edition of the album on CD and colored-vinyl LP, with the CD boasting three bonus tracks. Plus, in the weeks leading up to release, Swift’s webstore sold pre-orders of signed copies of the four standard CD albums and the four standard vinyl LPs. Midnights is also available in deluxe boxed set with a CD edition of the album and a Swift-branded T-shirt, exclusively for Capital One cardholders. Some superfans may have also been enticed to purchase all four variants of the album on either CD or vinyl, as the back covers of the four albums fit together like a puzzle to display a clock face (a literal reference to Midnights!). Swift shared the news through her social media in mid-September, saying: “If you put all the back covers together, she’s a clock. It’s a clock… It makes a clock.” (Swift’s official webstore sells hardware to hold the four CDs or the four vinyl LPs together as a wall clock.) The idea of assembling multiple versions of an album’s back cover (or cover) together to reveal a larger complete image isn’t unique to Swift, as other acts (frequently in the K-pop world) have employed a similar marketing idea. It’s not unusual for many artists to offer variants of an album, from multiple color vinyl editions to collectible CD packages and beyond. Swift herself has rolled out albums in a similar fashion in the past — she had four different Target-exclusive variants for Lover in 2015. In 2022, acts ranging from Red Hot Chili Peppers and Ozzy Osbourne to BLACKPINK and Madonna have all leaned in to the practice of offering multiple iterations of a physical album where usually the only difference is in packaging or the color of a vinyl LP. Lil Baby’s It’s Only Me falls to No. 2 on the Billboard 200 (110,000 equivalent album units; down 49%) after debuting atop the list a week earlier. Bad Bunny’s chart-topping Un Verano Sin Ti drops out of the top two for the first time since its release, as the set moves 2-3 with 67,000 units (down 7%). When the album hit its 18th week in the top two, it became the first set to spend its first 18 weeks in the top two since the chart since August of 1963, when Billboard combined its separate stereo and mono album charts into one single album chart. (See more history on the Billboard 200, which began publishing as a regular, weekly fixture in March of 1956.) Morgan Wallen’s former No. 1 Dangerous: The Double Album is a non-mover at No. 4 with 43,000 equivalent album units (down 4%) and The Weeknd’s The Highlights is stationary at No. 5 with 39,000 (down less than 1%). Arctic Monkeys score their fourth top 10-charting album on the Billboard 200 as The Car drives in at No. 6 in its first week. It earned 37,500 equivalent album units; of that sum, album sales comprise 28,500, SEA units comprise 9,000 (equaling 11.76 million on-demand official streams of the set’s songs) and TEA units comprise a negligible sum. YoungBoy Never Broke Again’s Ma’ I Got a Family starts at No. 7 on the Billboard 200 with 37,000 equivalent album units earned. Of that, SEA units comprise 36,500 (equaling 52.54 million on-demand official streams of the set’s songs). The new set is the 12 th top 10-charting effort for the prolific rapper, and his fifth top 10 in 2022 — the most of any act this year. He made his Billboard 200 debut in 2017 and got his first top 10 in 2018 with Until Death Call My Name. In total, his latest debut is the artist’s 25th charting effort. Styles’ Harry’s House is a non-mover at No. 8 on the Billboard 200 with 32,000 equivalent album units earned (up 1%). Jeezy and DJ Drama’s Snofall starts at No. 9 on the Billboard 200, marking the 11th top 10 for the former and the first for the latter. It bows with 31,000 equivalent album units earned. SEA units comprise 28,000 (equaling 38.45 million on-demand official streams of the set’s songs), album sales comprise 2,500 and TEA units comprise 500. Rounding out the new top 10 is Beyonce’s former No. 1 Renaissance, which falls 6-10 with 30,000 equivalent album units earned (down 10%). Luminate, the independent data provider to the Billboard charts, completes a thorough review of all data submissions used in compiling the weekly chart rankings. Luminate reviews and authenticates data. In partnership with Billboard, data deemed suspicious or unverifiable is removed, using established criteria, before final chart calculations are made and published.

HHappy birthday to the Billboard 200 albums chart!
60 years ago, on March 24, 1956, the United States’ premier album chart began publishing on a regular basis. The first No. 1 was Harry Belafonte’s Belafonte, which spent six weeks atop the chart. It was the first of 1,026 No. 1 albums on the Billboard 200 (through the April 2, 2016-dated tally).
Let’s take a look back at some major milestones in the history of the Billboard 200 through 2016.
March 24, 1956 — Billboard launches its first regularly published weekly albums chart, Best Selling Pop Albums. (It would change names to Best Selling Popular Albums the very next week!) This chart would eventually become known as the Billboard 200. Previous to the bow of the this chart, Billboard had tracked album popularity — but not consistently. The first overall album chart actually appeared 11 years earlier, on March 24, 1945. That chart was published on an irregular basis until it became a weekly fixture in our magazine on March 24, 1956.
May 5, 1956 — Elvis Presley’s self-titled debut studio album hits No. 1. The King of Rock & Roll’s set, fueled by the classic single “Blue Suede Shoes,” spent 10 weeks at No. 1.
May 25, 1959 — The album chart splits in two: Best Selling Monophonic LPs and Best Selling Stereophonic LPs. The names and depths of the charts would change slightly over time, but Billboard would publish two charts for mono and stereo albums until Aug. 10, 1963.
May 5, 1962 — The West Side Story film soundtrack begins its record 54-week run at No. 1.
Aug. 17, 1963 — The mono and stereo LP charts fold back into one overall chart known as Top LP’s. The 150-position chart would grow to 175 positions on April 1, 1967.
Feb. 1, 1964 — The Beatles arrive on the Billboard 200 with Meet the Beatles! The set debuts at No. 92 on the Feb. 1, 1964-dated chart, and would hit No. 1 two weeks later (Feb. 15). The album spent 11 weeks at No. 1 and was the first of a record 19 chart-toppers for the band.
May 13, 1967 — The chart’s depth increases to 200 positions, where it has remained ever since.
April 26, 1969 — The original cast recording of Hair reaches No. 1 for its first of 13 weeks atop the chart. It is, so far, the most recent musical cast album to hit No. 1.
Feb. 19, 1972 — The name of the chart changes from Top LP’s to Top LP’s & Tapes.
June 7, 1975 — Elton John’s Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy becomes the first album to debut at No. 1. Only six albums would debut at No. 1 until June 29, 1991 (more on that in a moment).
Feb. 26, 1983 — Michael Jackson’s Thriller starts its 37-week run at No. 1 — the longest for an album by an artist. (Only the West Side Story film soundtrack, with 54 weeks at No. 1, earned more weeks atop the chart.)
Oct. 20, 1984 — The word tapes is dropped from the chart’s name, as it becomes known as Top 200 Albums. It later transitions to Top Pop Albums (Jan. 5, 1985) and then The Billboard 200 Top Albums (Sept. 7, 1991). Its current name — Billboard 200 — is adopted on March 14, 1992.
March 7, 1987 — Rap resides at No. 1 for the first time, as Beastie Boys’ Licensed to Ill jumps from No. 2 to No. 1. The hip-hop trio’s album ruled the list for seven weeks.
May 25, 1991 — It was a week of “historic change” for Billboard, as we noted in a letter from our then-publisher, Howard Lander. That week, we launched our first two sales charts using electronically monitored point-of-sale purchase information, courtesy of SoundScan Inc. (now known as MRC Data). The first No. 1 on the revamped chart was Michael Bolton‘s Time, Love & Tenderness.
Lander wrote, “For more than 30 years, our sales charts have relied on rankings of best-selling records obtained from stores, over the telephone or by messenger service. Until now, the only technological changes have been the introduction of computer to tally the data more quickly and the recent usage of fax machines — but the basic methodology has remained the same… With (this week’s charts) we are proud to begin using actual piece counts our two leading charts: Top Pop Albums and Top Country Albums.”
That same week, we launched the Top Pop Catalog Albums chart, which ranked the best selling older titles (which were restricted from charting on the Billboard 200). The chart is later renamed Catalog Albums.
June 29, 1991 — Skid Row’s Slave to the Grind is the first album to debut at No. 1 after the Billboard 200 began using SoundScan data to power its ranking — and the first to open atop the list since Michael Jackson’s Bad in 1987. Six more albums bowed at No. 1 in 1991. The influx of openings at No. 1 is owed to the chart’s increased accuracy thanks to SoundScan’s point-of-sale data, instead of having to rely on ranked reports obtained from stores.
Nearly 25 years later, it’s normal for albums to debut at No. 1, and, generally speaking, few albums reach No. 1 unless they’ve debuted there. For example, since January of 2014, of the 44 albums that reached No. 1 for the first time, all but three of them debuted at No. 1.
Jan. 24, 1998 — The soundtrack to Titanic sails to the top of the chart, for its first of 16 weeks at No. 1.
April 8, 2000 — *NSYNC’s No Strings Attached debuts at No. 1, and sets a then-record for the largest sales week for an album since Nielsen began tracking sales: 2.42 million sold in its first week. The record would prove to be unbeaten until 2015…
Nov. 22, 2003 — The Top Comprehensive Albums chart launches, which combines both current and catalog titles together in one overall chart. The chart would continue weekly publication through the Nov. 28, 2009.
Dec. 5, 2009 — The Billboard 200 brings catalog titles back onto the chart, so both older and newer titles could chart alongside one another. (Essentially, the Top Comprehensive Albums chart became the new Billboard 200.) At the same time, a new chart for only current albums was established, and it was aptly titled Top Current Albums.
Dec. 13, 2014 — The Billboard 200 becomes a multi-metric popularity chart ranking overall consumption, measuring traditional album sales, track equivalent albums, and streaming equivalent albums. The new methodology was devised to provide a better sense of an album’s popularity by reflecting not just sales, but overall activity. (A pure sales chart was simultaneously launched as well: Top Album Sales. It maintains the previously methodology employed by the Billboard 200, comprising Nielsen’s sales data exclusively.) The first No. 1 on the consumption-based chart was Taylor Swift‘s 1989 (earning its fourth nonconsecutive week at No. 1).
Dec. 12, 2015 — Adele’s 25 debuts at No. 1, earning 3.48 million equivalent album units in its debut week, of which 3.38 million were in traditional album sales — a new single-week record.

I'm really speechless like wtf. Crazy. The back to back to back smashes of Lover, folklore and evermore albums really re-energized her career and public interest after slumping in public opinion during reputation. Amazing. I would have to say everything since Folklore Taylor has released has changed the GP's interest in her. Since then Taylor has had Evermore, Fearless TV,Red TV and Great low-key collaborations with HAIM and Big Red Machine that helped her in the long run. Taylor had lots of momentum coming off her recent work since 2020.

i...wouldn't put lover in that list. me! definitely dented her reputation. A lot of her rise in popularity was random songs going viral on Tik Tok though, which included many from Lover, such as Cruel Summer, the title track, Paper Rings and Afterglow. But yeah, that was more of a 2020 phenomenon. She's had better years than 2019.

That album deserved way better promotion than it got

A lot of her rise in popularity was random songs going viral on Tik Tok though, which included many from Lover, such as Cruel Summer, the title track, Paper Rings and Afterglow. But yeah, that was more of a 2020 phenomenon. She's had better years than 2019. I don’t even use Tik Tok, but those four songs have been the ones I’ve returned to the most by far. That album deserved way better promotion than it got For sure. Lover was so much better than Mehdnights.

Thanks for posting the charts, Gary.
No 100-plus-position droppers on the Billboard 200 this week.
Is Olivia Newton-John's Greatest Hits, new at No. 50 on Top Album Sales, just for the first GH, reissued on vinyl? I see Target has an exclusive coming out on Nov. 18, that combines the tracklists for both her first GH (1977) and Vol. 2 (1982).
Debbie Gibson's holiday album entered Current Albums at 91. Hope it at least reaches Top Album Sales in the coming weeks.
