The Contenders: Can Metro Boomin Bump Taylor Swift From No. 1 on Billboard 200? Plus, albums from K-pop stars RM and ITZY, and a Backstreet Christmas revival.
BY ANDREW UNTERBERGERWWelcome to The Contenders, a midweek column that looks at artists aiming for the top of the Billboard charts, and the strategies behind their efforts. This week (for the upcoming Billboard 200 albums chart dated Dec. 17): As holiday titles and heavy hitters vie for the top of the December charts, new albums from a star hip-hop producer and a couple of K-pop hitmakers join in the merriment. Metro Boomin, Heroes & Villains (Boominati Worldwide/Republic): You might have thought the big album releases were starting to wind down for 2022, but Metro Boomin begs to differ. The Atlanta-via-St. Louis producer has been one of the biggest behind-the-scenes names in hip-hop for a decade, and new album Heroes & Villains shows off his Rolodex, with enough star collaborators — Future, Young Thug, Travis Scott, The Weeknd, 21 Savage, Gunna, even narrator Morgan Freeman — to justify an accompanying short film. After dominating streaming charts on Spotify and Apple Music over the weekend, the set appears due for a big debut on the Billboard 200 — perhaps even one to challenge the producer’s Republic label-mate Taylor Swift and her five-week No. 1 Midnights for the chart’s top spot. (He hit No. 1 in 2020, with 21 Savage full-length team up Savage Mode II .) Though its consumption is mostly digital, Metro did release a CD version of Heroes & Villains to select physical retailers — and also debuted a deluxe “Heroes Version” of the album to streamers and digital retail on Monday, adding instrumental versions of each track. RM, Indigo (Big Hit): Singer/songwriter/rapper RM released his solo debut, Indigo, on Friday, a varied album that features marquee R&B names Erykah Badu and Anderson .Paak, as well as veteran Korean hitmakers Tablo and Park Ji-yoon. BTS, the world-conquering group which RM previously achieved stardom with, scored five No. 1 albums over the past half-decade, from 2018’s Love Yourself: Tear to this June’s Proof. His chart bow for Indigo this week will have to come without help from a physical release, as the set’s CD packages — which often move big numbers for Korea’s biggest pop acts — are not due until Dec. 16. Earlier this year, RM’s bandmate J-Hope entered the Billboard 200 at No. 17 with his own solo album debut Jack in the Box, also only from the support of a streaming and digital retail version of his album. (Jack has yet to be released on CD in the U.S.) ITZY, Cheshire (JYP Entertainment/Dreamus/Republic): Korean pop quintet ITZY hit the Billboard 200’s top 10 for the first time in July with their sixth EP Checkmate. This week, they aim to return to the top tier with sixth EP, Cheshire, featuring advance English-language single “Boys Like You” — though technically it’s already in its second week of release, since the streaming and digital retail version of the set dropped last Wednesday (Nov. 30). Cheshire’s chart performance will depend mostly on sales of its physical editions, which went on sale Friday. Like many K-pop releases, the CD came out in collectible deluxe packages (13 total, including versions exclusive to Barnes & Noble, Target and the group’s official webstore), each with a standard set of items and randomized elements (such as photocards and a poster). IN THE MIX Backstreet Boys, A Very Backstreet Christmas (K-BAHN/BMG): The classic boy band’s first holiday set made its Billboard 200 debut back in October, but should surge on the chart this week following its Dec. 2 vinyl debut (and the approaching season). It’s only reached No. 17 so far, making this week its best chance of keeping alive Backstreet Boys‘ double-digit streak of consecutive top 10 albums. Arcangel, Sr. Santos (Rimas Entertainment): Veteran reggaetón and Latin trap hitmaker Arcangel made a splashy return last Wednesday alongside perhaps the biggest male pop star on the planet with the Bad Bunny collab “La Jumpa.” That song should give Sr. Santos, the single’s 18-track parent album released on Friday — which also features appearances from Myke Towers, De La Ghetto and Bizarrap — a nice head start in consumption for this week. Ivan Cornejo, Dañado (Manzana Records): Regional Mexican star Ivan Cornejo charted at No. 149 on the Billboard 200 in June with sophomore set Dañado, which has since climbed as high as No. 64 thanks to its stellar streaming performance. The seven-track mini-album received a deluxe reissue on Friday, with three new bonus tracks, which should give it a big boost from its current chart perch of No. 145.

Metro Boomin Scores Third No. 1 Album on Billboard 200 With ‘Heroes & Villains’ Plus: Mariah Carey's 'Merry Christmas' returns to top 10.
By Keith Caulfield www.billboard.com/music/chart-beat/metro-boomin-heroes-and-villains-album-number-one-billboard-200-chart-1235184822/ 12/11/2022Metro Boomin’s superstar-filled album Heroes & Villains debuts at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart (dated Dec. 17), giving the producer his third leader on the list. The 15-song set starts with his biggest week yet: 185,000 equivalent album units earned in the U.S. in the week ending Dec. 8, according to Luminate — largely driven by streaming activity. Heroes & Villains boasts a cavalcade of heavy-hitters, including 21 Savage, A$AP Rocky, Chris Brown, Future, Gunna, John Legend, Travis Scott, the late Takeoff, Don Toliver, The Weeknd, Young Thung and unbilled spoken word cameos from Morgan Freeman. Heroes & Villains is Metro Boomin’s seventh charting effort on the Billboard 200, and fifth to reach the top 10. He previously hit the region with Savage Mode II (a collaborative album with 21 Savage, No. 1 in 2020), Not All Heroes Wear Capes (No. 1, 2018), Double or Nothing (a collaborative set with Big Sean, No. 6 in 2017) and Without Warning (billed to 21 Savage, Offset and Metro Boomin, No. 4 in 2017). On Sept. 16, Heroes & Villains was initially announced with a release date of Nov. 4. Then, on Oct. 26, the set was pushed to Dec. 2 due to sample clearance issues. Also in the top 10 on the Billboard 200, Mariah Carey’s Merry Christmas returns, rising 11-10. The album, released in 1994, peaked at No. 3 that year, and has returned to the top 10 in each of the last four holiday seasons. The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption as measured in equivalent album units, compiled by Luminate. Units comprise album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). Each unit equals one album sale, or 10 individual tracks sold from an album, or 3,750 ad-supported or 1,250 paid/subscription on-demand official audio and video streams generated by songs from an album. The new Dec. 17, 2022-dated chart will be posted in full on Billboard‘s website on Dec. 13. For all chart news, follow billboard and billboardcharts on both Twitter and Instagram. Of Heroes & Villains’ 185,000 equivalent album units earned, SEA units comprise 179,000 (equaling 233.38 million on-demand official streams of the set’s tracks), album sales comprise 5,000 and TEA units comprise 1,000. The album’s sales were largely powered by its digital download album, though there was a CD available in limited quantities (including a signed version), which resulted in about 3,000 sales. In addition, on Dec. 5 the album was reissued in a deluxe edition on streamers and at digital retail with 15 bonus instrumental tracks of the album’s standard songs. Following Heroes & Villains (released via Boominati/Republic) on the Billboard 200, a pair of former No. 1s is up next, as Taylor Swift’s Midnights (Republic) falls to No. 2 with 143,000 equivalent album units (down 5%) and Drake and 21 Savage’s Her Loss (OVO Sound/Republic) dips 2-3 with 78,000 (down 16%). Thus, Republic Records completes a sweep of the top three on the Billboard 200, the first time any label has held the top three since Republic itself did it on the Feb. 6, 2021-dated list. That week, the chart was led by Morgan Wallen’s Dangerous: The Double Album (Big Loud/Republic), Pop Smoke’s Shoot for the Stars Aim for the Moon (Victor Victor Worldwide/Republic) and Swift’s Evermore (Republic). Bad Bunny’s chart-topping Un Verano Sin Ti falls 3-4 on the Billboard 200 with 55,000 equivalent album units earned (though up 5%). Michael Bublé’s former No. 1 Christmas is pushed down 4-5 despite a 16% gain to 54,000 units. Harry Styles’ No. 1 Harry’s House rises 9-6 with 49,000 units (up 42% — mostly owed to vinyl LP sales) and Wallen’s Dangerous descends 6-7, but with a gain of 16% to 47,000. Wrapping up the top 10 are The Weeknd’s The Highlights (7-8 with 42,000 equivalent album units; up 5%), Nat King Cole’s The Christmas Song (8-9 with just over 40,000; up 13%) and Carey’s Merry Christmas (11-10 with 40,000; up 23%). Luminate, the independent data provider to the Billboard charts, completes a thorough review of all data submissions used in compiling the weekly chart rankings. Luminate reviews and authenticates data. In partnership with Billboard, data deemed suspicious or unverifiable is removed, using established criteria, before final chart calculations are made and published.

www.billboard.com/music/chart-beat/itzy-cheshire-debuts-top-10-album-sales-chart-1235185314/ITZY Notches Third Top 10 on Album Sales Chart With ‘Cheshire’By Keith Caulfield 12/12/2022 Plus: The Bocelli Family Christmas surges, Backstreet Boys' Backstreet Christmas returns to top 10 & RM's Indigo debuts. ITZY notches its third top 10 on Billboard’s Top Album Sales chart, as the South Korean quintet’s latest release Cheshire debuts at No. 4 (on the list dated Dec. 17). The act previously visited the top 10 with Checkmate: Mini Album (No. 2 in 2022) and Crazy in Love: The 1st Album (No. 1, 2021). Also in the top 10 of the new Top Album Sales chart, Taylor Swift’s Midnights holds at No. 1 for a seventh consecutive week, the Bocelli Family Christmas set surges 5-3 with a 70% sales gain, Backstreet Boys’ A Very Backstreet Christmas vaults 44-6 after its vinyl configuration was released and BTS’ RM debuts at No. 10 with his solo album Indigo. Billboard’s Top Album Sales chart ranks the top-selling albums of the week based only on traditional album sales. The chart’s history dates back to May 25, 1991, the first week Billboard began tabulating charts with electronically monitored piece count information from SoundScan, now Luminate. Pure album sales were the sole measurement utilized by the Billboard 200 albums chart through the list dated Dec. 6, 2014, after which that chart switched to a methodology that blends album sales with track equivalent album units and streaming equivalent album units. The new Dec. 17, 2022-dated chart will be posted in full on Billboard‘s website on Dec. 13. CD sales comprise 99% of Cheshire’s debut-week sales sum (all on CD; the album was not released on any other physical formats), with digital download album sales comprising a negligible sum. (The streaming and digital retail version of the album bowed on Wednesday, Nov. 30, while the CD edition dropped on Friday, Dec. 2. In the week ending Dec. 1, the album sold a negligible number of digital albums.) Like many K-pop releases, the CD configuration of the four-song Cheshire EP was issued in collectible deluxe packages (13 total, including versions exclusive to Barnes & Noble, Target and the group’s official webstore) each with a standard set of items and randomized elements (such as photocards and a poster). Taylor Swift’s Midnights logs a seventh consecutive week at No. 1 on Top Album Sales, with 67,000 copies sold (up 12%). The album has yet to depart the top slot after opening at No. 1 and has sold more than 50,000 copies in each of its first seven weeks of release. The last album to sell at least 50,000 in each of its first seven weeks was Swift’s own Reputation (Dec. 2, 2017 through Jan. 6, 2018-dated charts). Harry Styles’ former No. 1 Harry’s House bolts 6-2 with 28,000 copies sold (up 105%) after a surge in vinyl LP sales. Matteo, Andrea and Virginia Bocelli’s A Family Christmas rises 5-3 with a 70% gain to 24,000 – the largest sales week for a holiday album in 2022. The gain is owed to the continued impact of the trio’s appearances on CBS’ Sunday Morning (Nov. 27) and NBC’s Christmas at Rockefeller Center special (Nov. 30), along with publicity generated by the family’s ongoing concert tour and the premiere of their A Bocelli Family Christmas special (Dec. 4) on YouTube. (Matteo and Virginia are Andrea’s children, ages 24 and 10.) On the Billboard 200, A Family Christmas bounds 53-22 for its first week in the top 40. It’s the 20th top 40-charting album for the senior Bocelli, and the first for both Matteo and Virgina. Vince Guaraldi Trio’s A Charlie Brown Christmas soundtrack falls 5-7 with 14,000 copies sold (though up 5%). Backstreet Boys’ A Very Backstreet Christmas returns to the top 10, as the set zoom 44-6 with a 159% sales gain to 13,000 sold. The surge comes courtesy of the album’s Dec. 2 release on vinyl LP across four different variants. On the Vinyl Albums chart, it launches at No. 8 with 7,000 sold. Christmas debuted and peaked at No. 4 on the Oct. 29-dated Top Album Sales chart from digital download and CD sales. Michael Jackson’s Thriller falls 2-7 with 13,000 sold (down 30%) and Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours rises 10-8 with 12,000 (up 17%). Taylor Swift’s former No. 1 Folklore descends 8-9 with 11,000 (down 18%). RM nets his second top 10-charting effort as a soloist on Top Album Sales as Indigo debuts at No. 10 with 10,500 sold. The BTS member previous hit the top 10 on his own with Mono (debuting and peaking at No. 5 in 2018). Indigo’s sales are driven entirely by purchases of its digital download album, as its CD configuration is not due out until Dec. 16. In the week ending Dec. 8, there were 2.602 million albums sold in the U.S. (down 3.9% compared to the previous week). Of that sum, physical albums (CDs, vinyl LPs, cassettes, etc.) comprised 2.211 million (down 6.4%) and digital albums comprised 391,000 (up 12.6%). There were 929,000 CD albums sold in the week ending Dec. 8 (up 7.8% week-over-week) and 1.267 vinyl albums sold (down 14.7%). Year-to-date CD album sales stand at 32.821 million (down 10.8% compared to the same time frame a year ago) and year-to-date vinyl album sales total 38.137 million (up 3.4%). Overall year-to-date album sales total 90.551 million (down 8.3% compared to the same year-to-date time frame a year ago). Year-to-date physical album sales stand at 71.476 million (down 3.6%) and digital album sales total 19.075 million (down 22.6%).

Thanks, Gary.
Biggest dropper on the Billboard 200 this week is Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' live set, down 157 spots to No. 192.
30 returns to the top 10 on the Vinyl chart, and the top 20 on Album Sales. And it hangs tough at No. 70 on the Billboard 200.

yea Morgan's album is soaring to new heights, but I think The Highlights will get up there too.
