I've spent more time in 2022 listening to actual full albums from before current year than I ever have before. I almost feel out of touch with the music of current year with how seldom I'd listen to my discover weekly (and that I only kept a personal chart for like 5 weeks this year), but I've discovered so much cool music in 2022 that I can't send into a Madness or whatever, so I've put together a little list of 30 songs I discovered this year that I wanted to share. Mostly tried to stick to deep cuts, lesser known artists, or at least songs I don't think I've seen in a rankdown before because I hope these songs that I uncovered will also be good first listens for participants of this rankdown. 2022 also marks the year I completed reveals for my first rankdown ever (and a 100-song year-end one, no less), so I finally feel confident enough to host my own personal one. I probably don't have to explain rankdown to anyone who plans on participating here, just PM your ranked list to me (numbered or unnumbered is fine for me, just please copy & paste the list directly and don't change any spelling). Setting a due date for end of January now, but if I have to extend so be it:
Da list: 12 Rods – I Wish You Were a Girl Bear’s Den – When You Break Benton Falls – No Hero Bettie Serveert – Ray Ray Rain Beverly Glenn-Copeland – Ghost House The Cabs – dai hachi byoto China Crisis – Best Kept Secret Cloud Nothings – Wasted Days Coaltar of the Deepers – The End of Summer Cousteau – Last Good Day of the Year Crying – Revive Cut Copy – Hearts on Fire David Sylvian – Thalheim death’s dynamic shroud – Tear in Abyss Dinosaur Jr. – Little Fury Things Doris Troy – Just One Look The Durutti Column – Sketch for Summer Fair to Midland – A Wolf Descends upon the Spanish Sahara Fairport Convention – Who Knows Where the Time Goes? I might submit a list for this. I recognize those songs by Cut Copy, death’s dynamic shroud, and Insides since I’ve listened to their albums.

#1: 4.5/5
#2-11: 4/5 #12-26: 3.5/5 #27-30: 3/5
This is how I would rank these songs, and I have a specific reason for my #30.

I'll definitely submit my list sometime tomorrow. I only have twelve songs left to rank, but work wants me to be in meetings all day today unfortunately. Which means no music listening >:(

#30 Never Wanted to Dance Mindless Self Indulgence
Points: 53 SD: 4.692
Comments: Yeah wasn't really expecting anything else here to get the #30 spot. MSI isn't new to me or anything, can't say I've been a HUGE fan of theirs, but my husband that doesn't listen to music like at all LOVES them and...KMFDM and that's like all lol. So I've listened to if and Euringer for them, and, even though you won't see me being a huge MSI fan, Never Wanted to Dance DOES f uck. And, you know, getting married was probably my biggest moment in 2022 (well, second to when a guy at the record store tried to give me free Hinder concert tickets, but close), so I wanted to represent that here.

In Love with the Flame Linda Thompson
Points: 79 SD: 7.909
wheatsquares33 – 5 American Idiot – 17 BB🌕 – 18 aerodynamite – 22 zippy – 26 Trilogy – 27 singingrulebritannia – 28 willapted33 – 29BlurryKyle – 30 rowellfarm490 – 30 Comments: Aww, kinda hate to see this one finishing so low. Discovered Linda Thompson's first solo album One Clear Moment listening through some rankdown extras--the song Can't Stop the Girl is really great too! A bit more jaunty and folksy than this one, but overall this is a pretty solid 80s pop record (I like it more than I Want to See the Bright Lights Tonight I think). In Love with the Flame is for sure the standout track for me, really sounds like it could have been a smash 80s pop ballad, but I guess 80s pop stardom isn't really what Linda Thompson was going for, I don't think. One of my most listened to tracks of 2022.

A Wolf Descends Upon the Spanish Sahara Fair to Midland
Points: 82 SD: 6.233
Comments: Shame that Fair to Midland broke up just after they started some mainstream acclaim. I've always liked Dance of the Manatee and did a deeper dive on this band earlier this year, I love their approach to alt metal, very artsy and one-of-a-kind. _Fables from a Mayfly_ is a great record, I recommend it if you haven't heard it and liked this song. Kyla Cries Cologne is another one of my favorites that I could have included here.

When You Break Bear's Den
Points: 83 SD: 7.196
Comments: I’ve always been partial to the band Bear’s Den, but mostly for their post-2016 material. I listened to their debut this past year though, and it’s...mostly okay. Above the Clouds of Pompeii is a classic, but this track really impressed me. Didn’t expect it to do great here due to it being...radio indie folk, but I just love how this one builds towards the end.

Juneau Funeral for a Friend
Points: 85 SD: 8.885
Comments: Even though I'm kinda through my "emo phase" at this point...I don't think it would be a true wheatsquares rankdown without SOME emo representation. Honestly uh don't even remember how I discovered this one, think I just remembered that FFAF existed and listened to a few of their bigger hits and this one really stood out to me. Really classic early 2000s emo sh it, I live.

Ain't No Sunshine Wovenhand
Points: 90 SD: 6.164
Comments: I think one of my favorite discoveries in all of 2022 is 16 Horsepower's seminal gothic country album Sackcloth & Ashes. ...I don't have anything from that album in this rankdown, though I did consider it. Instead, I chose this Ain't No Sunshine cover from David Eugene Edwards' side project Wovenhand's first album. Decent record overall, but I just love this cover, I think it's my favorite from that album.

No Hero Benton Falls
Points: 102 SD: 5.029
Comments: Don’t even remember how I came across this band (probably some random Spotify rec), but I was cooking and needed something to listen to and said idk, I’ll listen to this Benton Falls album. I don’t remember much about it as a whole, but No Hero is the real standout track. This thing hits so f ucking hard, the simple bluntness of the lyrics tell such a tragic story.

Sets the Blaze Hope Sandoval & the Warm Inventions
Points: 106 SD: 7.152
Comments: This just showed up on album radio for...some album I listened to, and I immediately fell in love with it and listened to the whole album. It's a pretty good chamber folk project from the Mazzy Star frontwoman, but Sets the Blaze remembers my favorite track from it, as brief as it is. Spellbinding.

I was moved by the emotion and atmosphere in “When You Break” so I’m not convinced it’s one of the weaker tracks in this set of songs.

Best Kept Secret China Crisis
Points: 108 SD: 7.177
Comments: Another alt archive discovery here. I believe we ranked this band once or twice in our retro alt rankdowns, this particular song missed the cut, but it’s for sure my favorite of theirs. I like the uh "Wii Sports-core" vibe, very nice sophisti-pop.
