To cut to the point, this is a rankdown of my 40 favorite non-mainstream country or country-adjacent songs, that partly reflect my personal year-end choices, plus a mix of older but still great songs to bring the variety.

There are some repeats with upcoming Americana airplay rankdown, so you can feel how good the better side of the rankdown is.

Also shoutout to Turnpike Troubadours and Tyler Childers for making all four volumes with songs from different projects, and I cannot wait what the former will bring this year.

5. Where would you place this volume in terms of quality comparing to other volumes? I think Volume 2 was the highest of the past 3, overall. There was less in this volume I didn't like at all (i.e., generally everything was good, at minimum). Volume 3 had a few more dogs.
6. Any other comments? I really like Turnpike Troubadors and William Clark Green, but neither of these songs were their best efforts, IMO. As always, a highly eclectic list of artists - many of whom I am going to have to check out. Thanks!

Terry Allen, mostly known for Jaurez and Lubbock (On Everything), has got a cult following throughout the years. Abandonitis is in his latest album Just Like Moby Dick released back in January 2020 i.e. when COVID-19 cases are showing up around the world. The song talks about the lingering feeling of loneliness in the modern society.

I like the mysterious vibe especially with the accordion. I fully expect this to end up close to the bottom because of old man vocals, but surprised it wasn't in last place until the last two or three submissions even though the only upper half ranking comes from me, and there is only one participant (🌺CountryLineDancer) who got a perfect ranking. Don't be happy so soon, though...

That's right. After 🌺CountryLineDancer loses his last place ranking, he immediately loses his #1 and becomes the first participant to lose the #1 (my condolences). At least one can say he loses his last place rank before the first place rank. gonecountry , .indulgecountry and I lose the last place rank.

I certainly didn't expect this to be someone's #1 in this list, and because the lead singer has rough vocals like Kip Moore, I never think this would go very far, but I'm glad they may find some new fans here. Honestly I don't have good experience with this group before and remembered not feeling his vocals as well at the beginning, but when I heard this from their self-titled album released last year, something has clicked. Maybe because most of my favorite country albums released last year are quite somber and serious, this song (really the parent album) is a bolt of energy to me. Maybe not very country per se and I feel this wouldn't be too out of place in AAA radio but I think the catchy and fun chorus in spite of dark moments are nice.
