#2. Something in the Orange by Zach Bryan
This is the highest I've ever put a country song on this list, not only the best hit song of last year not named Running Up That Hill, but perhaps the best country song of the decade so far and without a doubt one of my personal favorite country songs of all time.
I'm specifically highlight the Z&E version for this spot. While the original recording is good with it's more restrained and quiet production, the more tired and exasperated delivery from Zach and the warmer production with the better mixed guitar, and added harmonica and piano just add so much warmth and body to this song. It's the type of organic country that I'd be recommending to people who want better country, not the type I'd be learning thanks to following mainstream charts. It perfectly embodies the conflicted emotions of this song, the tension of not knowing whether this relationship will survive or last long, enjoying the moment and love as it is for now, but always on the edge. The use of orange is very telling: either the sunset on a relationship that's doomed to fail and that's he's foolish to try to continue, or perhaps some warmth and hope that they can make this work or even if it does end, that he'll still be able to wake up fine in the morning. It's that ambiguity that I love the most, one that's clearly killing Zach Bryan, with every look towards the horizon, and especially at the end, choked up at all the pain it's left...but still wishing for some happy ending.
The fact this got as big as did organically without a big mainstream push on country radio and in fact Zach Bryan's entire success this year, is only just icing on a very delicious cake. I don't know if Zach Bryan will still around in the mainstream but whether or not he sees further chart success, he's also proven himself to be one of the most talented musicians and songwriters in country.
