Simple, fun question: Which decade contains your favorite music? Sorry if this thread's already been done before, Proboards search function is a mess. Also, have this cute little graphic I made to represent the decades (if it's a bit pixelated that b/c I had to shrink it to be <1MB) Attachment DeletedI'll start with my opinions -Anything before the 70s is usually too old for my taste -The 80s is great, mainly the first half -The entire period of 1986 - 1996 is mostly unappealing -2006 is when things started picking up, each year better than the last, until music peaked in 2013 -While my favorite music period (2008 - 2014) is in the past, I'm loving 2020s music so far -I like the direction music's headed going into the core 2020s Overall, I give my vote to the 2010s, specifically the first half

I voted for 80s music because I grew up listening to alot of pop/mainstream/r&b songs from that era, and plus I'm an 80s baby to the fullest! It's definitely my fave decade for pop/mainstream music, in general. I feel like it was the most fun time for music, IMO. In high school, I would pretty much listen to it all the time moreso than the other decades.
I also love the freestyle music from that era. I would listen to it alot during my middle school years.
My second fave is 90s music, mostly for R&B music, Dancehall, and New Jack Swing. I grew up listening to that type of music since I was raised in that era, and all my main faves were at their peak...Janet, Toni, Mary J. Blige, Selena, Aaliyah, Brandy, Monica, etc. And the vocal trinity Mariah, Whitney, and Celine existed. Such a great time for music. I miss those days terribly. It will always be a special time for me.
My third fave is 70s, mostly for Disco/Soul/Funk. Also listened to it alot during middle school.
My fourth fave is the 2000s when I still find the music to be enjoyable.
My least fave of them all is the 2010s-now. I only like very few artists from this period.
I don't really listen to anything pre-70s that much, but I love the Motown era.

1. 2010s 2. 1980s 3. 2020s 4. 1990s 5. 2000s 6. 1970s
Not going to rank the rest just because I feel like I don't really know enough songs to fairly rank them in comparison to the other decades here.

Can't really rank them, so I'll just give my impressions, based on the pop charts:
1940s and before: interesting from a historical perspective. 1920s jazz and late 30s/early 40s swing/big band are the best, but a lot of good softer "crooning" as well.
1950s: good pop singing early in the decade; it gets more interesting later with rock and R&B.
1960s: several different phases but fascinating all the way through. British Invasion and Motown/soul are my favourites, along with some of the psychedelic-type stuff.
1970s: some dull spots but overall diverse and interesting. Generally I prefer the later 1970s.
1980s: now we're getting into stuff I remember firsthand. Pretty great throughout, especially from about 1982-87. The beginning of the decade (at least on the pop charts) is a bit softer/quieter and the end a bit fluffier than I'd prefer, but still enjoyable.
1990s: see just above, but substitute 9's for 8's. Even the pattern is similar (mid-decade is my favourite.)
2000s: a bit below the previous two, but interesting. I prefer the latter half of the decade.
2010s: reverse of 2000s. I like the first half best; 2016-19 is a bit slower than I'd like but generally OK.
2020s: too soon to tell really, but so far a step above the later 2010s.

1. The 1980s: The early 80s with rock & ac taking over was ok, but the 80s really picked up around 1984 when soundtracks started to become a thing and r&b/urban/more black acts began to crossover. Then there's Latin freestyle and dance. Also, r&b music was really great that decade! And the 80s had such a variety on the radio that we won't get anymore. You could hear Prince, Pointer Sisters, Stevie, Diana, Dionne, MJ, Janet, Karyn, Bruce Springsteen, Duran Duran, Tina Turner, Tiffany, Madonna, Debbie, etc...on the top 40 radio. Multiple genres were allowed spaces on top 40 radio. Top 40 Diversity was amazing. This decade has carefree magic to it, that won't ever be replicated. Best decade for pop music.
2. The 1970s: I love the disco & R&B music from this decade. This decade was magical and even the pop hits were amazing as well. I enjoy a lot of music from this decade and the 70s gave us mega-classics. Best decade for R&B.
3. Close behind the 70s, the 90s: was fantastic for pop music up until the teen pop era (yuck). I enjoyed the ac music that took over top 40 stations and then pop music had a teen pop shift and just went south. The R&B music was fantastic here as well! No complaints.
4. The 2000s: not much to say, but great hits, beautiful hits.
5. 60s: I enjoy the Motown acts and the other black musicians out at that time.
pre 60s and 2010s-2020s has been lackluster imo

It seems unanimously agreed that early 2020s music proved to be better than the late 2010s

I am going to say the 2000s are my favorite. But, I will expand that range to include the late 90s and early 2010s.
For fun though, I will still break down each.
70s: Some cool songs, especially in the late 70s, where there is a lot of electronic and new wave 80s sounding songs that I didn't realize were a part of this era.
80s: Also a lot of neat songs and variety. I like how the late 80s and early 90s blend together as the same era. Kind of like an era for soft rock and soft pop and ballads and early Alternative.
90s: Really great! Specifically, the early and late 90s - 90 to 93 and 97 to 99.
2000s: My favorite! So much song diversity and a lot of my favorite songs of all time are from here. My favorite points being 03 to 04 and 07, 08, 09.
2010s: I definitely agree with everyone else who said that the first half of the decade is better than the second half. The first half of the 2010s had a lot of really good songs. The second half had good ones, but there seemed to be a good bit more in the first half.
2020s: Hard to say how it will play out. The beginning seems to be a step up from the later part of the 2010s so far.

1970’s singer/songwriter era is the best music in the rock era imo.
Next is obviously 80’s. Then 90’s. Then 60’s. Then everything after 2000, which pales in comparison with anything in the last century.

The 1990s because it had something for literally everyone: - the 'teen pop' phase from the late 1980s carried into the 1990s with New Kids on the Block and others and then resumed in the late 1990s with Backstreet Boys, Britney, etc - we also had pop music from Spice Girls, Hanson, Donna Lewis, Ace of Base, etc - dance music had a nice go of it with C&C Music Factory, La Bouche, Black Box, CeCe Penistan, etc impacting - hip-hop entered a golden age with 2Pac, Biggie, Jay-Z, etc - we also had 'commercial hip-hop' from Mase, Puffy, etc - this was the last decade we saw consistent success from R&B groups with TLC, En Vogue, Jodeci, SWV, Boyz II Men, etc all doing well - in the latter half of the 90s we got the 'neo soul' movement with D'Angelo, Erykah Badu, etc - R&B also produced major solo acts like Mary J Blige, R Kelly, Brandy, etc - AC music did well with Celine, Michael Bolton, Bryan Adams, etc having big hits - there was also room for jazz to do well, with Natalie Cole hitting big again, and Harry Connick Jr, Take 6, and Cassandra Wilson hitting the scene - the late 80s trend of hair bands bled into the early 90s with Poison, Warrant, etc having some hits - we of course saw alternative music hit its peak with Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Green Day, etc thriving - more 'classic' rock also had popularity with acts like Metallica, Aerosmith, and more having success - there was also a bit of the 'singer/songwriter' flair from Jewel, Shawn Colvin, Elliott Smith, Edwin McCain, Tori Amos, etc - Latin music had a surge with Selena, Ricky Martin, Enrqiue Iglesias, Gloria Estefan, etc hitting big - country of course had a great decade on its own, from Garth Brooks to Alan Jackson to Patty Loveless and more, but we also saw acts like Shania Twain and Faith Hill crossover - there was the brief swing revival with Cherry Poppin Daddies and Brian Setzer Orchestra - the 90s even found time for 'world artists' like Enya, Enigma, and those Gregorian Monks - and of course 'the divas' (Madonna, Janet, Whitney, Mariah) were all consistent hitmakers in the 90s, as were Michael Jackson, Prince, and George Michael Seriously, what more could you ask for?

SPRΞΞ "which pales in comparison with anything in the last century" I have the exact opposite opinion! jenglisbe well jeez you kinda sold me on the 90s. I should listen to more from that decade irice22 the electropop/EDM craze coming to an end was the start of music going downhill in the 2010s, but that was inevitable - no era last forever. But the direction most artists turned to was minimalism, which was exciting at first (2014/15), but it devolved into lazy, half produced, generic pop in the later half of the decade. Then trap rap took over & (unpopular opinion to some) it SUCKED at first, until it merged with pop in late 2018/early 2019, ending the decade on a new, exciting note (which is still kinda the era we're in today)

SPRΞΞ "which pales in comparison with anything in the last century" I have the exact opposite opinion! I’m sorry to hear that. I was listening at work to this Pandora station 70’s 80’s 90’s and whenever an old Elton John or Fleetwood Mac song came it set such a great vibe at the bar. By far the best music era imo. Do you think Bad Bunny is better?

the 90's for me had some of the best r&b music ever. my favorites were mostly the ballads .male and female groups dominated with Boyz II Men my favorite.Jodeci , Shai , TLC , SWV were great as well. Mariah was at her peak then as well.writers such as Babyface and Diane Warren wrote alot of the best songs.
70's was the peak of disco which i love and had The Bee Gees , Donna Summer and more. Philly Soul and ballads were also big which i really like as well. Elton John was at his peak as well during the decade and is one of my favorites.
50's and early 60's rock and r&b is also among my favorite music . there was doo wop and some really raw exciting rock and r&b during that time .
80's had some good music . it was the post disco era .MTV became popular and alot of interesting uk blue eyed soul and techno pop came out of it. there was some good r&b though alot of it became dominated by synthesizers as opposed to the live instruments of previous decades. Whitney,Lionel Ritchie New Edition, DeBarge were among my favorites.
2010's gave us Bruno Mars , Ariana Grande the 5H girls and The Weeknd who were among my favorites. there was other good pop stuff though not a fan of the Trap sound or alot of the Latin crossover stuff.
i mentioned before i liked the early 60's though alot that music was similar to the 50's . the mid and late 60's which gave us The British invasion and folk rock and psychedelic was alright but not my thing . Motown which became popular and the Stax soul sound was good but i prefer the r&b music of other decades more.
2000's gave us Rihanna and Ne Yo who were among my favorites . also American Idol gave us alot of popular singers in which Jordin Sparks was my favorite . r&b as well as rap which became more dominated with the Crunk sound really went down hill during the decade.for me overall it was the weakest decade.
too soon to rank the 2020's. Tik Tok has become quite influential on what has become popular. some good songs have come from that and some bad. Doja Cat is so far the most interesting act to break through.

I voted 2020s so far.
I believe the later the decade, the better the music is.
I think the 1970s and 1980s had some pretty out of this world music, but not even they compare to the best songs from any of the later decades that we have been in.

The lack of any votes for the 1960s is kind of appalling. I get that few if any of us were alive then, but the 1960s were the decade of The Beatles, The Supremes, Johnny Cash, Stevie Wonder, The Beach Boys, The Four Seasons, Martha Reeves, The Ronettes, Roy Orbison, Marvin Gaye, The Monkees, The 5th Dimension, Sonny & Cher, Dionne Warwick, Otis Redding, Simon & Garfunkel, Sly & The Family Stone, and more!
The only reasoning I have for the 2010s having so many votes (and the 1960s having 0) is that a lot of people on the board grew up in the 2010s. We do tend to favor the music of our adolescence.

For some reason that part is sending me! I don't really favor the music of my adolescence, I like it, but it's nothing compared to the golden times of the 60s-90s.
