I think HAC has become a format for folks in their 40s (like me). We grew up with rap, it's not surprising to me that pop-leaning rap songs would do well on that format, particularly if they have a catchy sing-along chorus like Super Freaky Girl.

Yeah, similar to the way rock music would have been inconceivable on easy listening stations in the 60s and 70s (when they were playing Perry Como and Sinatra) but it became commonplace once the rock generation got older. I worked at an AC station in the late 90s and Eric Clapton and Rod Stewart were staples. Rap is 50 years old, we're entering an era where older people aren't afraid of it. Which might make some of us feel old ha ha but it's good to see the genre grow and expand in unexpected ways.

Is Boy's a Liar the first hyperpop top 40 hit? Has there been any other songs to chart other than Sugarcrash?

It's hard for me to call Boys A Liar hyperpop tbh I feel like it's almost too chill to fit that genre but it's certainly nothing like anything else charting, it's so exciting

Yeah at the end of the day I'd call Boy's A Liar a straight up pop or electropop song. I think it's much closer to Jersey club than hyperpop though, which makes sense since Jersey club is having a huge moment right now

exactly as I predicted. Hyperpop's playing the same role as dubstep in the 2010s. A new genre that blows up underground at the start of a decade, but is too unorthodox for the GP. So rather than the genre as a whole becoming mainstream, elements of the genre become mainstream

You need to slow this down to about 0.6x speed for songs to sound OK:

I legit just think people are looking for something different, every decade has a new artist/genre that comes in and sweeps all the old stuff out, even briefly. In the 2010's it was Lorde, in the 90's it was Nirvana/Grunge, and I think now we are looking for something to sweep away all the trap and 80's throwback music that has flooded radio and the charts this decade. Unholy and boy's a liar aren't exactly life changing but I appreciate that they sound forward thinking and not just another disco/80's synth throwback. This is also why I love Raye's "Escapism" so much.
