Midnight. Oh, what a richly storied hour. This is the time of day where everything is possible. Exciting beginnings. Bittersweet endings. Love, heartbreak. Realizations and confrontations. Trauma. Healing.
It’s the magic of this hour that brings these things to life. At midnight, we’re at our most vulnerable. If you’re anything like me, your window is the only one still burning brightly against the darkness of the midnight sky. Why is that? It’s your brain bringing up the slightest hint of a thought, one that would go by unnoticed at any other time. But here, it’s trapped. There’s nowhere for it to go. The light catches it and ignites it like a match, letting your mind bring it into the vast landscape of wonder. Your mind finds it as attractive as a moth finds a flame. It takes ahold of it, drags it to your doorstep, and pounds on the door to your dreams. The cacophony of it is too much for you. You’re now wide awake. And when you wake, you’re in the same place you were; and yet it feels entirely different. The stillness in the air is eerie. What is it that has brought you to this place?
Maybe it’s that question you’ve wanted to ask yourself but didn’t. That realization you made about yourself a long time ago that slipped through the cracks, and it feels too urgent to ignore now. It sits like a ship in the harbor of your mind, technicolor flags waving proudly in the night. Its reflection is distinctly you, down to the last detail. And it’s as if it’s real. The space it takes up is bigger than the whole sky.
Why are you still awake? Is it that lavender haze crush you’ve had for awhile? The person who’s turned your dreams maroon on the nights that you actually can sleep? They made you dive head first, fearless, to a place that feels apocalyptic. Like a valley desecrated by some great war or like seeing snow come down on the beach.
Or is it the brutal confrontation with anxiety? The idea that everyone actually hates you and is just putting on an Oscar-worthy show. The revelation of just how alone you really are. It’s not like Mr./Ms./Mx. Maroon wants anything to do with you anyway. You’ll never get to visit Paris. Unless you go there on your own, because that’s what you’ve always been. On your own.
Isn’t it fascinating how quickly our thoughts alternate between self-love and self-hate in the middle of the night? It’s as if we’re trying on different outfits, different scenarios. One minute, you feel like a bejeweled god or goddess standing amongst a sea of people. They’re all transfixed on your beauty, and have been since your moonstone aura entered the room. The next minute, there’s a glitch in the system. The jewels have eroded. Everyone is out to get you, the big bad monster on the hill. You’re too much of this and not enough of that. It pierces you in the heart, and they don’t care. But it doesn’t kill you. And why is that? Because for all your fears, for all your anxieties, you know that karma’s coming around.
This album speaks to all of that. It speaks to our love and our fear, our turmoil and our tears. It speaks to those of us who have tossed and turned and decided to get up. To go looking into the labyrinth of our minds, searching. Hoping that maybe, just maybe, what we’ll find is ourselves.
