In this thread, I'll be conducting a progressive approach to Billboard's Adult Contemporary and Adult Pop Songs (formerly Adult Top 40). With the mainstream success of rock 'n' roll in the mid-1950's, chart veterans such as Nat "King" Cole, Frank Sinatra, Perry Como etc. would have to compete up and coming rock stars on the Hot 100. It wasn't until July 17, 1961, that Billboard created its first "Easy Listening" chart, one that would highlight the top non-rock songs in the nation. Initially, this chart was hand picked straight from the Hot 100 at the discretion of the editors. If the top non-rock song was #3 on the Hot 100, then it would be #1 on Easy Listening. The formula shifted on July 5, 1965, when Billboard split the Hot 100's airplay panel and designated non-rock stations to supply their playlists specifically for the Easy Listening chart. Retailers would also be surveyed to provide sales data for this chart. Like with The Progressive History of Billboard's Rock Era, I will be creating cut off points at the end of each decade. This will allow for a historical in-depth perspective to chart not seen before. Again, major thanks to Joel Whitburn who has inspired many of us to look deeper into the numbers. The AC chart expands to 50 positions in July 1973 and will lose its sales component by February 1978. As for the music itself, there is plenty of soft rock and country music hitting the waves. The Carpenters make the biggest splash of the decade by scoring a then-record 14 #1 hits and 36 weeks total week atop.

I love this thread! I'm hoping to see if Dionne can pull off the 80s. I thought she'd be on the list by now.

36 weeks on the chart being the longest runner. Nowadays in its 36th week a song is still climbing.

These days the Adult Contemporary chart seems borderline useless as the majority of songs played on the format are actually recurrents that aren't eligible to chart. Just seems bizarre when 90% of a playlist is actually not reflected on a radio chart.
Has the AC format always been that way though? Or did that become more of a trend this century. Understandably, actual full playlist data including recurrent songs is hard to find so far back.

Whitney and Madonna stats? Whitney has 34 AC hits, 26 of which went top 10, and 10 #1s. Her last #1 was "I Have Nothing" in 1993. Madonna has 37 AC hits, 15 of which went top 10, and 5 #1s. Her last #1 was "Take A Bow" in 1995.

From what I remember, AC always played some songs that had been hits 5-10 years earlier if they fit the format. So there were always a fair amount of recurrents on the stations. Old hits by acts like Barry Manilow, Neil Diamond, Streisand, Air Supply, Bread, etc., continued to get play on those stations years past the time when Top 40 stations were playing anything by those acts. But I think a difference between then and now is that there were also a lot of acts who recorded pretty much exclusively for the AC format. There was some crossover with current acts (look at Lionel Richie's AC stats in the 80's), but I think most of the songs were either by former Top 40 hitmakers who had aged out of the format, or by acts that pretty much were exclusive to the format. So you'd see songs on the AC charts that weren't hits anywhere else, except maybe in the lower reaches of the Hot 100. There were times when Top 40 went soft, like the early 70's and early 80's, when there was a fair amount of overlap, but in a lot of ways the AC chart was independent of the Hot 100. In this century, however, and especially lately, there really aren't that many acts that are unique to AC. Instead, AC is generally where midtempo or slower hits from other formats go towards the end of their runs. "Blinding Lights" is a good example of this. If you look at this week's AC chart, it's full mainly of songs that peaked on the Hot 100 between 3 and 9 months ago. There are a few legacy acts that don't really have mainstream pop hits anymore on this week's AC chart - Shania Twain, Kelly Clarkson, Jason Mraz - and in the lower regions you'll sometimes see format-unique hits (like on last week's chart where a cover of "Karma Chamelon" was at #25) but if you look at most of the chart, especially the top, it's mainstream pop hits that are late in their current runs or recently recurrent. And the slower turnover at radio this century is probably just accentuating this trend.

Prior to July 1993, the AC chart was compiled by disc jockey-submitted playlists that were given tiered weights based on a station's popularity/location. Beginning with the July 17, 1993 issue, Billboard switched over to a formula that incorporates data from Nielsen Broadcast Data Systems, ranking the chart on the total number of detections (spins) on this format in a given week. You may notice that songs will stay around much longer than in previous decades, similar to the Hot 100, essentially rewriting the record books in the matter of a few years.

In the 90's, AC radio gave way to a format known as "hot adult contemporary," music aimed towards a younger adult demographic that often featured newer, upcoming artists. In order to reflect this shift, Billboard created the Adult Top 40 which was first published in March 1996 (with test charts dating to October 1995) and continues to published weekly till this day. The boundaries between "soft" and "hot" AC are evident here throughout the 90's and even the early/mid-00's, but the lines have blurred considerably since then. Nonetheless, this chart provides an excellent sample of music that's both contemporary and speaks to heart.
Many thanks to KingofSkiffle for additional help with this data.
