Dru Hill was formed in Baltimore by Mark "Sisqó" Andrews, Tamir "Nokio" Ruffin, Larry "Jazz" Anthony, and James "Woody" Green. Their name comes from Druid Hill Park. "Never Make a Promise" was the third single from their self-titled debut album. Written and produced by Daryl Simmons and with Jazz singing lead, it reached the Top 10 on the Hot 100. The music video features a cameo by the late actress Michelle Thomas, who at the time had a recurring role as Myra on Family Matters.

The popular remix was produced by Jermaine Dupri and features him and Da Brat. It samples "Gimme What You Got" by Le Pamplemousse.
